vertically movable platform\\a;nd suitable` n'iechanisn'i provided for removing said sheets singly from the top of said pile and feeding the same to the press. This proceeding would, of courserlower the level of the top ot' said pile and as it'is important to the success-tui opera tion -ofsaid feeding mechanism7 that the level ntiithe top of said pile remains substantially constant, suitable mechanism for automatically accomplishing this is desiraole.
The object of my present. invention is to provide such automatic mechanism which shaii be of simple construction and efficient in operation.
My invention consists in the combination and arran ement of parts hereinafter described an claimed.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the aceompanving drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fi ure l is a. top plan view of mechanism for ceding sheets to'a printing press, in-
cluding my improved mechanism for autofv matically maintaining the top of the pile of sheets at a substantially constant level; Fig. artially in section of the mechanism for e evating'the sheet pile, and Fig. 3 e transverse section of the same.
The pile of sheets .1 Vis vertically movable platform 2 aving rollers 3 contacting with thesides of the frame 4t and thus serving to guide said platform in it'svertical movement. Platform 2 is suspended upon four flexible belts 5 taking over pulleys 5 in frame 4 and wrapped upon shafts 6 supported in bearing brackets i at either' side of frame 4. 'Quartentmsted belts 8 are wrapped, upon shafts 6 and upon a transverse shaft@ mounted in framefl. At
1su portedon 'a one endshat 9 carries a ratchet Wheel l0 tlxed thereto and-a pivotcd pawi arnrll card ryin a pawll 12 adapted to engage ratchet whe-e l0 A link '13 connects pawl arm ll with a wrist-pin 14I on a disk l5 which is. carried by a shaft '1G suitably mounted on frame 4. Shaft 16 carries a gear 17 mesh.`
-one of the driven shafts ot theniain feeding met'ha-nism. X stop pawl l0 serves to pre'- vent backward movements of ratchet l0. By this construction it will be seen that the pavvl.
-ai?m ll. andpawl l2 will be constantly re vciin'ocated vand that when pawl l2 is in engagement with ratchet l0 the shaft Sl will the medium of belts 8, shafts 6 and Belts 5.
laivl 12 is connected by a link :2O with the outer. longer limb 2l of a substantially il shaped level' mounted in hearings 23 on frame 4. The lever 22 carries a positioning collar betweenbearings 23. 'Collar 2li. 'is provided 'with an upwardly extending bolt or pin to which is attached a spring 26 having its other end secured to a bracket 27 on ing with a gear 18 upon a she-ift 19 which is he operated to elevate platform 2 through' frame-fl, 'l`l1e inner and shorter limb oflevcr 22 takes under a cross bar 2S) carried hy a lon .gitudinally extending lever 3() which has au foot 3l at its end contacting ,with the top et' the sheet pile l. The lever 30 is pivoted in e standard 32 secured to a supporting talole 33 on trame 4. .A spring 34 secured to said lever 3G and to said support-ing table 33 serves to yieldingly hold said lever foot in i contact with the top o the sheet pile. @on .tacting with the under side of lever t? an eccentric cam 35 secured to a shaft 36 which is mounted in brackets 37 supported on table 33. Shaft 36 carries a gear 38 meshing with,
a ear 39 on shaft il which is one ofthe driven shafts of the main feed mechanism. .The cam '35-is providedr for the purpose ot raising 'the foot 3l from the top of the sheet;- l pile when the top sheet o' said pileis re moved therefrom. The' specific mechanism .for removing the top sheet 'from saidpie -forms no part of my present invention and is not illustrated.y in detail, inasmuch as any `Well known or desired mechanism tot' this pu'rpose may be employed. lt will be on j served that as the level of the top of the sheet pile descends, due to the removal. of sheets therefrom, the-cross har 29 will de scendtlerewith carrying with it thepawl l2 through the medium of lever 22 and link 20. As soon as pawl l2 is depressed suseen that the sheets sii-e i'emoved from f lle top of the ,Sheet pile the level ef the top i l ei the pile will lee maintained substantially ennetent, thus facilitating the operation of the mechanism for Withdiawing lie sheets singly ioin the top of sind, pile. By making the erm 2l. longer than the ni'm 28 the Varlin tiene in the level of the top of the sheet pile are mngniliefl in transfer to the pewl 12 thus ineieasing the sensitiveness ol. the mech enisi'n.
