ROBERT HAUSDORF, OF BOCI-IUM, GERMANY.
APPARATUS FOR DISCHARGING LIQUIDS FROM BARRELS INTO STORAGE- RECEPTACLES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT HAUSDORF, a citizen of the German Empire, and resident of 49 Kanalstrasse, Bochum, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Discharging Liquids from Barrels into Storage-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for discharging liquids, more particularly inflammable liquids, from barrels into storage receptacles, and the characteristic feature of this apparatus is that the bung-hole, at the upper part of the barrel, is connected by means of a flexible pipe to a rigid dischargepipe at a lower level, while the air or gas space of the storage receptacle is connected by means of a second flexible pipe to a pipe extending nearly to the bottom of the barrel. If the barrel is turned so that the bunghole faces downward, there is always in respect of the rigid discharge pipe, or bend of the siphon, a hydrostatic head which automatically operates the discharge. It is immaterial if this head is lost in the course of the discharge, inasmuch as the initiated siphon action in any case continues the discharge.
The drawing shows one form of the new apparatus, Figure 1 being an elevation and Fig. 2 a plan view.
In a substantially T-shaped pit a, are mounted two pairs of parallel beams 6, carrying rollers c, which are adapted to support the barrel (Z, to be emptied. The upper surface of rollers c, is on a substantial level with the top of said pit, so that the heavy full barrel may be readily transferred from floor a to rollers 0, while the pit a, prevents the spreading of the inflammable liquid in case of breakage. The barrel is first placed upon rollers c, with the bungholc e facing upward; then the union or coupling g,
threaded at f, is screwed into the bung-hole. From the union a pipe it extends into the barrel nearly to the bottom of the latter. There is an annular passage 2' in the union, around the pipe h. The pipe h is connected by means of a flexible hose or pipe is and union Z to a pipe m leading to the air-space of the storage receptacle 'w. The annular passage 2' is connected by a flexible hose or pipe at to a union 0 and pipe 1) leading to the receptacle w. The barrel d is then ro- Specification of Letters Patent.

tated through an angle of 180 into the position indicated by dotted lines, whereupon the flow of liquid from the barrel to the receptacle w automatically takes place, the air from the receptacle w flowing through pipes m, 70, and it to the barrel. The annular passage 2' forms a small well at the bottom of the barrel so that the latter is completely emptied. At the termination of the discharge from the barrel the last portion of liquid in the pipe 1?. also flows to the receptacle to, when the barrel (Z is returned to its original position. This is an important advantage of the apparatus; with the ordinary apparatus heretofore used a certain quantity of residual liquid is always left in the barrel and must be separately discharged into some kind of receptacle, without means of guarding against explosion.
The roller-support c affords a steady seat for the barrel (Z and greatly facilitates the turning of the latter, which is an important advantage in view of the weight of the barrel. It also obviates strain on the flexible pipes.
Means are provided for closing pipes m and p, in order to prevent entrance of air to the storage receptacle when liquid is subsequently drawn from the latter. For this purpose the said pipes are provided with a double cock 9 connected by lever 1" and rod 8 to a rod t. Springs a normally thrust the lever r to the left, so that the cock closes the pipes. The union 9 has a projection 11, which during rotation of the barrel abuts against rod t and moves thesame to the right, compressing springs u. The cock 9 is thus operated to open the pipes m and p for the discharge. When the barrel is rotated to its original position again the pipes are auto matically closed.
That I claim is 1. Apparatus of the character described, comprising a pit, barrel-supporting rollers mounted therein, a pair of pipes adapted to enter a storage tank, a barrel-coupling, and a pair of hose connecting the coupling with said pipes, the length of said hose being sufficient to permit a semi-rotation of the barrel.
2. Apparatus of the character described, comprising a pit, barrel-supporting rollers mounted therein and projecting into substantial alinement with the top of the pit, a pair of pipes adapted to communicate with the top and bottom of a storage tank, a I connecting the coupling with said pipes, and barrel-coupling, and a pair of hose connectmeans actuated by the abutment for controling the coupllng with said plpes, the length ling sald pipes.
of said hose being sufficient to permit a semi- Signed by me at 'Barmen, Germany, this 5 rotation of the barrel. 17th day of May, 1909.
