To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM H. AoKER- MANN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Set-Screws or the Like; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efiective set-screw guard for shafting or the like, its construction and arrangement being such that it can readily be attached to a collar, hub or shank of any device that is necessarily secured to a revolving spindle or shaft, the guard serving as a protection against accidents caused through the clothing of persons being caught in projecting set-screws of machinery at which they are employed, said accidents being quite common even though great caution is used.
The invention therefore consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts as hereinafter fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 represents an elevation of a shaft and collar secured thereto by a setscrew, together with an attached guard embodying the features of my invention, the view being partly broken away and in section, as indicated by line 11 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan view of same with parts broken away, and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the guard detached.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 1 indicates a shaft, 2 a collar and 3 a set-screw for the same. A flexible metallic-band 4; is fitted over the collar and set-screw having overlapping ends 5 and 6, the inner end 6 being provided witha slot 7 for the reception of a tongue 8, which tongue forms an extension of the outer band end 5, and is, after being inserted into the slot, bent down as shown, by any suitable tool to interlock said ends. A rectangular pocket 9 is riveted to the inner face of the band and arranged to incase the set-screw 3, the pocket also serving to prevent displacement of said band by the screw-head projection which rests therein. The said pocket 9 is constructed from a single metal blank, which is primarily in the form of a cross. The radially Specification of Letters Patent.

disposed arms of the cross are bent upward from a base-portion to constitute side-walls of the aforesaid pocket, the bottom or baseportion of which pocket is riveted to the band, as shown. By constructing the pocket 9 as above described, the crossends which are normally in the flat, may be bent down more or less so as to snugly fit the faces of the bolt or screw-head as shown, the ends being bent at a point so that they will form a pocket that will snugly fit the head to which it is adjusted. Thus it will be seen that the pocket may be made to conform to bolt-heads of different dimensions and will thereby serve as locks preventing the bolt or set-screw from loosening or turning when the shaft is in motion.
As best shown in Fig. 1, when the guard is adjusted to the set-screw it forms an un- 1 tongue end thereof cut to fit the required diameter.
I claim:
A guard for bolt-heads, set-screws or the like, comprising a flexible band having overlapping ends, a slot in the end of the innerlapped band-end, an interlocking inturned tongue for the slot at the overlapped bandend, the inturned tongue being reduced in width relative to the band; in combination with a pocket comprising a primarily crosslike blank having a base-portion in rivetedconnection with the band, the cross-arms of the blank constituting sidewalls of the pocket adapted to be bent downwardly from the base-portion to conform to faces of the bolt-head, whereby the same is held against movement.
