Application lcd July 1, 1907. Serial No. 381.643.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that. I BnNoT M. W. HAN- soN a citizen of Sweden, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Reducing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reduca machines and more es ecially to that, c ass of such machines in w ch a vertical spindle is employed for carrying the reducing or grindin -tool.
Main y the object of the invention 1s the provision of a mahine in which the cart-1er for the reducing-tool ma be operated either manually or automatica. ly, as will hereinafter appear.
Other objects of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a machine involving my invention; and Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view of the slide, rack and pinion mechanism, and certain co erating parts, and, Fi 3 is a like view o a pair o connected s afts, worm gearing associated with une of .said shafts and power and hand operable means for the other shaft.
Like characters refer to likc parts throughnat the several figuras.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the base of the machine from which rises a column 2 the latter having a guideway 3 on which is fitted a slide 4 the column haviny a rack 5 meshing with a. pinion on said 'de as will hereinafter appcnr. Designated by 6 is thc vertical spindle of the marhint` driven by a pulley T over which passi-s n hell 8 leading over idlers fl to the main driver l0. At thc lower end ll of thc spindle G is fitted the griml ing disk or shell i9, all of the elements just. mentioned bein" conventional, and constitilting no part n the present invent-inn.
Upon ways of thc hed l is titled a carriage lJ-l mrrying a \vorksupport 14, novidcd with T- ooves l5 in which may c titled T-holls iiir securing lhc usual work-support.
Designated hy 16 is a shaft joui-na al 'lu a lxuring nl the slide 4, and provided with a pinion 1T in mesh with tlurack of slide ll. A \\'|:|rn|wlical lh* is loose] mounted on tha shaft ll, and in mesh will said worn:- whccl is n wurm lll carried hy a vertical shaft 20, the latter bein journaled in bearings of the frame and aving at its lower end a beveled gear 21; a bracket 22 projects from the frame, and serves as a support for said gear 21, and in mesh with the gear 2l is a similar beveled gear 2:2'.
For connecting the worm 18 t0 shaft 16 any desired means may be employed, that shown comprising a cup-shaped frictionclutch 23 movable toward and from said worm-wheel by means of u hand-nut. 24 threaded upon the end 1G' of the shaft, and bearing through an intermediate washer 2i, against the hub of the hand-wheel '26, the latter bein in slidable splined connection with said s raft 16, and bein" placed between the washer 25 and the hu of the splined clutch 23, so that when nut, 24 is adjusted it will, throu h its washer, bear against the hub of the wieel 2G, and through the same force the clutch to engage the worm-wheel 18, as illustrated in Fig. :2, thus locking said wormwheel to its shaft. It will thus be seen that when the clutch is out of enga ement with the worm-wheel and when it is esired to rotate the shaft 16 by hand, and thus manually to adjust the position of the slide carrvin lhc grinding-wheel hy means of the whee 2li this may readily accomplished at a point above thc hase 1 of thc machine.
Designated hy 2T is the .shaftbearing the bevel pinion 22. said shaft being journaled in bearings of the frame, at right angles to the vertical shaft 20. On the shaft 27 is keyed a ratchct-whcel 28, und loosely mounted upon either a collar 29 or it may he a huh projecting from the ratchet. wheel is a crank-arm or disk Z held against tuo frei* rotativo uan-murat hy liu-ans nl' a ln'akcshuc 'll. hacked hy a spring Il?, as illustrated in Fig. 2l. 'l`n Ihn lult nf lho` Vnlrhet'- u'lwvl 2H, and ndjnslullly secured to a thinlhlc. with thv shaft T ly a screw llfl is un arm :lll carrying a :sliml 3.'. l'nr throwing a paw] 36 pirati-d lo thv vrault-aru'i or disk 3U nul of engagiuwut with the rali-het teeth on said disk when ilul limit nl' umrcuwut ul said disk has been arcumplislwd h v thc null malhfot-d uurhanism nl' Ilu-` machine: :unl ivi-youd thc al'lu rl :i hand-wheel l'i' is lwyml In lhncud nl' shaft T and is hold in place nu said shaft hy a nul Ils, threaded upon n rvduccd mul 3U nl' llul sha fl. lly adjustilw thc arm -l around lla- Ihimldv an llashall .ET,
lill',
and then lockin it in place by the screw 23 the throw-olf o the awl 36 can be regulated to occur at any csired point.
Articulated to the crank-arm or disk 30 is a link 40 connected at its opposite end to an oscillatory lei-er or carrier 41, which is automatically actuated by power-mechanism (not shown), whereby the shaft 27 may be driven automatically and, through the connections described, will gradually lower the feed-slide 4 by means of geari (not shown in which the grinding-spinti e 6 is journa ed, and constituting no part of the present invention. 0
In machines of this kind it is important to be able to immediatel arrest the automatic feed of the grin ing-wheel at any desired ont, and it is also important to control tiie movement of the automatic feeddevices. Provision is, therefore, made in the resent machine for accomplishing the resa ts mentioned and this is readil donc either b hand wheel 2.6 above the ase of the mac 'ne and its connections with the rack 5, or by means of the hand-wheel 37 rejecting from the forward part of the base, and so connected that it may be manipulated when the pawl 36 is tripped or thrown out of action, to rotate said shaft 27, and through the gearing 29., 21, shaft 20, worm 19, and worm-wheel 1.8, canse the proper manual movement of the slide 4.
It is sometimes necemary in tine reducing work to manipulate the slide 4 carrying the reducinghdisk or wheel with the utmost nicety, and t is may be readily accomplished in either of the ways described so that a skilled workman always has at hand proper means for manipulating the grinding-wheel slide at different points and for running back said slide when desired without the necessity of reversing mechanism.
My invention is not limited to the recsc devices illustrated and described for c ianges be made wit-hout departure therefrom.
aving thns described the invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination of a slide, a rack and pinion means for operating said slide, a shaft, automatic mea-ns for operating said shaft, hand o rable means for turning said shaft, opera ive connections between said shaft and said rack and pinion means, and manuall -operable means active independent of said and-operable means for also operating said rack and pinion means.
2. The combination of a bed, a column rising from said bed, a slide supported for movement by and along said column, rack and pinion means for operating said slide, a shaft supported by said bed, automatic means for operating said shaft, manuallvoperable means for also turning said shaft, operative connections between said shaft and rack and pinion means, and manually-operable means supported by said column for operating said rack and pinion means to effect the movement of said slide independently of either said automatic means or first nientioned manually operable means.
3. In a machine of the class described, the combination, with framework, of a slide mounted thereon, a spindle carrying a reducing-tool and journaled in said side; a rack carried by the machine-frame; a shaft; a inion secured to said shaft, and in mesh with the rack; a worm-wheel loose upon the pinion shaft; a clutch for connecting said worm-wheel to the inion shaft; and means carried by the pinion shaft for operating the feed when the clutch is disenga said means including a hand-wheel, an means for forcing the hand wheel against the clutch.
4. The combination of a slide, rack and pinion means for operation', said slide, a shaft to which the pinion o said rack alid pinion means is connected, a liiind\\'liecl. moans for clutching said lniiidwhecl to said shaft at will, a second shaft operatively connected with thc tix-st mentioned shaft, and automatic-ally-opeiative and manuali '-opcr atve lneans for turning said secon( inontioned shaft.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
