Application filed February 26,1909; Serial 110180464.
Toall whom it may concern: g
- Be it known that I, C A iLEs W. OLsoiq' a citizen of the United" States, residing at Condoinin the. county of Gilliam andstate 5 of-Oregon, have invented'a new and "useful Inn roveme'nt in Harrows, of which :the folowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings;
My invention relates to harrows having rotatable knives or cutters.
The object of my invention is to provide a barrow in which removable knives are secured in holderswhich are rigidly mounted on shafts extending laterally of the harrow and which knives may. be placed at right angles with the shafts or at an oblique angle thereto. I attain these objects and other advantages by themechanism y con struction,,, combination, and arrangement of parts illustrated iu 'the accompanying draw lugs,which-form a pa rt hereofi It. .well. k wn. ha a qw ghe e efwein use do not satisfactorily agitategthes oil puli'e ia 95 the ei a hef m these respects and v is novel, useful and v economical.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my harrow bearings of the shafts carrying the knife holders.
Like numerals and letters refer to like parts throughoutthe views.
AA'-A "are sectional frames of the barrow, the in -tends ofA A" being secured to the pective ends-of the frame A by pivoted link bars 7. Q
B represents draft bars placed on the front sides of the sectional frames in suitable location. Each sectional frame is pro-.
vided with two transverse squared shafts 88' with circular ends. The holders between frame sections are. retained upon the ends of the shafts by any convenient means.- The holders may, a so be secured upon the sleeves at right angles to the same and to the shaft, orat an ob i ue angle thereto as may as il ustrated b the holdersv The hol ers are combe desired an 14= '14 respectively.
osed of two circular members 16-46, see
igs. 3, 4, 5. The member 16 is rigidlysecured u on the sleeves 15-'15 either at right ang esor at any desired oblique angle thereto. This member is formed with re- 1 0 cesses 17 on its side at right angles to each other to receive the knivestherein. The sides of these recesses also have bosses 18 a formed therein and which enter recesses 19 formed in the edges of the upper parts of the knives. The member 16' 1s. a circular plate having a squared opening through its center at the proper angle to receive through it thesleeve upon which it is to be laced. The members 1616 are provide with openings through which bolts 21 may be passed and fastened by nuts 22 to secure the members of the knife holders together when.
the knives are in lace. The knives 23-23 are formed with Eat vertical shanks having the recesses19 inthe edges of the same.
It willnow be seen that whenthe sleeves carrying the knives at diflerent angles thereto are placed upon the respective shafts an arrangement thereof is made as illustrated, whereby bifurcated, beveled knives are provided, and those on the forward shaft will rotate at angles oblique either to the right "or left with'res ect to the shaft and those on the rear sha t will rotate at right angles thereto. It will be further noted that in my harrow the operator may arrange the knives 'One ormore sectionsof the harrow maybe used asmay be desired. Theknife lates being easily. removable and the knives eing easily removable from the holders, it will thus be seen that any number of differently positioned holders and any number of knives -ma be conveniently and economically kept on and for use in the machine.
Another. advantage in my machine is that. the knives may be made of steel and thus more durable and. effective knives used therein than where the knife is of cast-iron or in- .te ral. with the knife holder.
nives in my machine may be easily removed to sharpen them or to replace broken orinjured onesand my harrow thus kept constantly in 'good working order.
. Having thus described my invention, I claim: f
1. A harrow having one or more rectangular frames, each havin closed. circular shaft bearings at each en squared shafts with circular ends mounted in said bearings,
. andknife'carriers comprising sleeves having squared'longitudinal openings formed to receive the shafts therein, said sleeves being of suitable length to engage the ends of the frame and each other andfretain the knife holders thereon a suitable distance apart,
knife holders rigidly secured upon the centers of said sleeves, partly at right and .partly at oblique angles to the same and to the shafts, "said holders being composed of two members, the member 16 having four recesses on its innerface at right angles to each other, each formed with bosses 18 on its sides and to receive knives 23 therein, the member 16 having plane faces and means to rigidly secure said members together with the knives between them in the recesses, substantially asdescribed.
4 2. In a harrow the combination between squared shafts mounted in closed bearings at each end of a rectangular frame, and knife carriers comprisingsleeves having squared longitudinal openings formed to receive the shafts therein, said sleeves being of suitable length to engage the ends of the frame and each other and retain the -knife holders thereon a suitable distance apart, knife holders rigidly secured upon the centers of said sleeves, part-1y at right and partly at oblique angles to'the same" and to the shafts, said holders being composed of two members, the member-16 having four recesses on its inner face at right angles to each other, each formed with bosses 18 on its'sides and to receive knives 23 therein, the member 16' having plane faces and means to rigidly secure said members together with the knives between them in the recesses, substantially as described.
3. In a harrow of the kind described knife carriers comprising sleeves having squared longitudinalopenings formed to receive the shafts therein, said sleeves being of suitable length to engage the ends of the frame and each other and retain the knife holders thereon a suitable distance apart, knife holders rigidly secured upon the centers, of said sleeves, partly at right and partly at oblique angles to the same andto the shafts, said holders beingcomposed of two members, the member 16 having four recesses on its inner face at ri ht angles to each other, each formed wit bosses 18 on its sides and to receive knives 23 therein, the member -16 hav- -.ing plane faces and meansto rigidly secure said members together with the knives between them in the recesses, substantially as described. i
