ROY A. FRENCH, OF OAKMONT, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNGR T0 FORT PITT SPRING &

RAILWAY DRAFT-GEAR.
iii-race.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patwgnfi-pd D 28 1909 Application filed July 28, 1906. Serial No. 328,157.
'To all whom '1' 1 may concern sistance may he increased by frictional action upon the spring itself.
'lo that end, the invent'on consists in applyinga radial pressure to the spring through the action of a cone or frustum of a cone. I
It further consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts as hereinafter more fnllywlcscribed and claimed.
in the drawings, 2 represents the yoke, 3 the draw-liar, 4 the front follower, and the roar follower. The front follower is pro vided with a rearwardly extending central I core 6, which is in theform of the trust-um conical core is a spiral spring 7,
- front follower willfirst com Ann of a cone, the smallest diameter being at its rearend. The front I art of this core is pref crahly rcduced'to cy indrical form as shown at (3 to ive clearance and insure release on the recoil action. "1." his reduced portion may he of any desired length. Surrounding this which is also of conical form with an interior diameter slightly larger than the exterior diameter of theconical core when the parts are in normal position; The rear follower is preferably provided with a central hole to allowthe passage of the core or stem therethrough. In the use of the draft rigging, on but?- ingr strains the rearward movement of the ress the spring in the usual manner unti 1 the rearwar movement of the conical stem causes itto bear upon the inner surface of the spring. From this oint on the action of frictionis added to tliht-of the spring by the mien of the 5 )ring un movement of t e core. A radual resistance thus be added to t e spring action,
increased to almost any desirable amount by varying the angles of the parts. In pulling, the yoke will act upon the rear follower to compress the spring, which which may be ezipan er the longit'u inal will give only spring action until ithas moved fon'ard sufficiently to engage the largerdiameters of the core, when the same action will occu' as before, the front follower being held by the usual stops.
'lhe iuivuntages of my invention result from the simplicity of the device, andfrom the enormous resistance which inay be obtained. The bursting )LGSSUI'G upon the spring may he rcgi'ilated by changing the angles of the cone and parts, and the rigging may he adjusted so that the spring aclion will continue through any deslred part of the stroke hetore't-he frictional action is set 11 i.
Va l-ions changes may be nuide in the destails of construction and .arran ement of the parts, within the scope. of t e appended claims, without departing from my invention. Y
I claim z 1. In a friction device for draft riggings and other pur oses, a longitudinal spiral sprin ,a conica' stem within the s ring, and a fol ower arranged to actuate tie conical stem, the cone being arranged to act upon the s ring frictionally after a predeterminc portion of the stroke; substantially as described.
In a friction device for draft riggiirgs and other purposes, a longitudinal spiral spring of conical sha e havin spaced-apart coils, and a conical riction evlce coacting therewith; substantially as described.
- 3. In a friction dev1ce for draft riggings and other purpose s, a longitudinal s iral spring of conical shape, and a; follower. aving a cone stein within the spring; substantially as'described.
4. In a friction and other purposes, aslongitudinal spiral spring, a conical device arranged to "exert a bursting pressure therein, and a follower having a pocket to receive the cone device in the latter part of its stroke; sul'istantially as described. s 5. In a. friction device for draft riggings nnd'other purposes, 8. Ion itudinal con cal spiral spring having space -apart,'coils, and a conical device arranged to exert a bursting pressure therein, said conical device being cut away in a portion thereof to give clearance;substantially asrdescmbed.
- 6. In a friction devlcefor draft riggmgs and other purposes, a longitudinal spiral I" r having spacetlepart coils of gratlu l aing ,lieineter and a friction device therewith having a gradually (le diameter; substantially as described. 7 lln. a, friction device for drettriggings other purposes, a longitudinal spiral position, and arranged to exert a radial bursting ressure on the, spring; substantially as -escribed.
9. In 2. friction device, an endwise' com pressihle frictional member comprising a t ring spececlepart coils of gra'clu-' I ting into said member, the drum and the member cooperating frictionally.
succession of continuous coils or loops of 2e varying external diameters and a drum fitcoiled member.
10. In a friction device, an endwise C(Jlll ressible frictional member coin risin a successionof connected coils or loops of varying externaldiaineter and a drum member arranged to he brought into frictional contact with the inner surface of said coiled member after a partial compression of said 11. A friction device for draft riggings and other purposes, coniprtsinga conical shaped coil spring, and a cone arranged toenter the spring to. have frictional contact therewith, said cone having a portion, the silrface of which is of less angularity than the frictional surface of the cone; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
