Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1909.
Application filed November 6, 1908. Serial No. 461,274.
To all whomy it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILSON W. BUnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing`- in lhicktord. in the county ot' lVinnebago and State of Illinois, havel invented a new-'and useful Improvement, in Yarn Changing Mechanism for Knitting-lvlachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for changing the yarnwhile the machine is in operation in that class ot knitting machines known straight knitting machines. It embraces a transversely movable trans'ter bar having a series ot grooves or spaces adapted to admit the yarn carriers, and by which bar said grooves or spaces may be positioned in register' with the ways in which the carriers travel past the needles` so that at the completion of each round of the carriers they will be entered .in one of said grooves 0r spaces and be in readiness at such times to be transferred by the bar. The bar is actuated at proper times by suitable mechanism, so that it transfers any carrier which may have jnstentered it, o ut` ot' register with the said ways, and presents another carrier in its stead. the latter being then automatically coupled to the actua-ting device and moved along to the needles and continuing the knitting.b
The nature of the invention and the details of the mechanism by whichit is controlled are fully. set forth in the snbjoined description. and are also illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 11. is an end elevation, certain parts bei-ng omitted. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig.
3 is an elevation ol a portion of the mechany ism controlling the trans't'er bar. Figs. f1 and 5 are detail viewso'tl 4the switch wheel showing dill'erent positions. Figs. t3 and 7 are sectional views ot said wheel. Fig. S is another view ot the switch wheel showing` the cam carrying arm in a ditl'ercnt; position from Figsfftand 5. Fig. tl shows the transfer control disk detached. Fig. 10 is a vertical section of the driving bar engaging the yarn carriers. Fig. 11 shows the guide for returning the movable switch section ot the switch wheel to normal position.
, In said drawing, 1 is the supporting base, and 2 the frame to which the operating parts are mainly attached.l 3 is a rocking lever, the lower end of which is pivotcd to the base by a link connection (not. shown) and the npper'end of which is pivoted tc and operates a cross head f1. A. pitinan 5 is pivoted at one end to the rocking lever, and its other end engages the crank pin (S of the crank wheel 7. The machine is driven by a belt running on the tight pulley 8, which7 with its ceac-ting loose pnlley 9 is mounted on one end of the shaft 10, journaled on the 'frame 0 driving pinion ll which meshes into wheel 7, which is secured on shat't. i8. -A toothed wheel 13 on shaft 1li is actuated from shat't 1S by a switch wheel 20 on the latter. and the. pat-tern cylinders 2l and are driven from the wheel 13 by pinion wheel l5 on shaft 1li, meshing' with gear 1G on the shaft of pattern cylinder 21 and said gear 1G meshing .with gear 17 on the shaft ot' cylindcr 212. Shaft 18 carries a second switch wheel l5) which operates the yarn changing device torming the subject oli this application, and which-is described later. Spacing bars 24tand Q5 are parts ot the needle beds and in them are vtormed ways for the recip- .rocating cam bars 2T and 28 by which the needles Aare actuated.
I have shown three yarn carriers slt). fll and l2. They travel back and Vlorth along ways 4? formed between the needlebcds. and receive power in so doing` trom the cross head l-. through the driving bar 4t which is adjnstably fastened to the cross head and is adapted to detachabtv engage the uptnrned flange -t5 upon the carriers. They are. all ot' the kind known as latch openingv carriers, that is to say they are armed with points adapted to open the latches ot' the needles. Their construction is well understood by users and manntaeturcrsot straight knitting` machines at the present time. (ljne ot lsaid carriers is shown as moving along said ways lli, and the other two are shown in Fig. L as positioned in the carri spaces ot the transfer bar etti. This bar is movable back and torth in a straight line transversely ot the machine and is supported on the block vt7. lt has any desired number ot' carrier spaces. snch has 5PM 5t. 55 and 50, each adapt. ed to admit a carrier` andthe bar is also adapted to be moved so as to bringeach ot the spacesinto register' with the .ways etti. The normal stroke of the head 4 is such that. the carriers are enteredin that one ot' the spaces 53 &e. which'h'appens at the time to be in register with the ways #13,' so that it the bar be moved when any acting` carrier is in `the bar, such carrier will be forced outI of On the other end of shaft l0 is thel action, and another carrier may in the saine movement ol2 the bar be positiol'ied for action and take the place of the one which has just been forced out.
The transverse movements of the bar #i6 are caused by a lever 57, pivoted at 58 and connected to the bar 6 by a rod 59, and the movei'nents of lever 57 are received from and controlled as to the time of their occurrence by the switch wheel 19 on shaft 18 through the downwardly extending toothed segment 60 which rigid with the lever. Said switch wheel is provided with a centrally located peripheral rib (il, one section 62 of which is hinged and movable from its central nonactinle' posit-ion Shown in Fig. l, to either ot' the lateral positions shown in dotted lines in the same figure, and in which the n'iovable Section will be `stationed against the pin U3 or the pin 6ft. The rib Gl and its mmable Sect-ion engage the segment ($0 and either hold it `tationary or shiitt it according to the position Vwhich may have been `given the movable Section.
The mechanism for shifting the switch section is desirably constructed as follows: At (35 is a shaft on whien is mounted a ratchet disk Gn havingA uniform teeth all around and engaged by the pawl 67. lhe pawl GT receives regular actuations through the lever G8, one end ot` which engaged and vibrated by the cam G9 upon the shaft 18 and thereby is enabled vto turn the disk and shaft 65. Attached lo the ratchet disk 66 is another disk T() which may appropriately be called the transfer control disk. and which provided with one or more raised teeth 7l. and one or more depressions or notches 72, the intermediate portions 72% oi the periphery of the disk between the teeth and the depressions being located in a plane midway between that ot the top ot the teeth 7l. and that o't the bottom of the depressions 72. l'tidincr upon the periphery of disk 7() is the foot174 ol an arm T5 which is joined to a crank TG on a rock shal't TT, carrying an arm 7S. 'lhe sha't't TT is arf ranged parallel to shalt. 1S and the arm 78 carries two cams 7l) and S0 and is arranged in proximity lo the switch wheel lt) so that the cams engage the arm Sl attached to the movable switch section (59, and projectingl laterally ot' the switch wheel as shown more particularly at Figs. et, 5 and (i. 'l`he sec `tion G2 is pivotcd upon a pivot H2, so that` when the arm 8l which also pivoted upon a pivot- 83, is engaged by the cams, the section swingseithcr toward pin {Si} or toward pin 64, depending' upon which cam engageS the arm, cam 79 being' adapted to act; 'up ward on the arm and cause movement toward pin (33, and cam 8() being adapted to act downwardly on the arm and cause movementy toward pin 64. 'lhe movable section 62 preserves an upright position upon the .wheel by virtue ot the vertical pivot Si of the section toward pin t-rt causes itil movement in the other direction.
lith the construction described, the operation is substantially as follow The transter control disk is rotated regularly at intervals, aml when the aised tooth Tl passes the arm T5, it raises the latter so as to anse a rocking' ot shaft' 7l and the arm TS is thereby swung so as to carry its cani Ti) againety the arm Sl and operate the movable switch section and carry it against the post. or pin (33. rl`his swings the segment o() and in so doing' shifts the transfer bar so as to carry Vthe yarn Arinde then in active engagement with the drivingv bar ,fiel out ot such engagement and at the same time by its lateral movement bringing anotherguide into actingl position with its flanges l eire'agiu; the drivinr,r bar. After the toot T3 has thus operated the switch it falls on to the intermediate track 725 ot the control disk, and the switch as soon as it has moved beyond the segmentJ (it) is returned to its normal position by the `guide Slseen at Figs. S and ll and lo fated under the switch wheel. llhile upon the track nl, the foot. T5 isl idle and the switch consequently remains in line with the.
rigid part ot the rib (il. but it may be opened repeatedly as often as necessary by \\f'idenin; the teeth 'il or the notches i2. In Fig. l) the tooth 7l is adapted to cause threix operations ol the transter bar in close succession,y and the notches 72 Ishown each cause a single operation. 'lhe enlarged or widened tei-th or notches a 't to retain the arm T5 iu its raised or depressed position t'or longer periods and consequently the arm TS remains in acting; position and trips the switch at each revolution ot the latter. thereby cansino; tlnl ri;- peated transfer operations. when it is desired to drop the talu'iot'rom tln` needles` tlnl transfer bar is shil'ted so as to present an empty carrier space `opposite the carrier driv device`r so that at the next. stroke oll the latterno yarn will be delivered to the needles. At Fig'. 7, l show two springs Sli and H7. One ot' these keeps the pivot Htl in position. and the other ot which helps to maintain the switch in its upright position.
