DOOR-BELL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX SExAUER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Bells, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a door bell adapted to be secured to the frame of a door above the door mounted therein and to be operated by the door when it is opened for the purpose of notifying the occupants of a building that the door has 'been opened.
Figure I is a side elevation of my door bell in position for service and illustrating in dotted lines the operation of the bell. Fig. II is a front elevation of the bell.

l designates the body of a bracket secured to the door trame and provided with an outward jutting horizontal arm 2 that extends from the upper end of the body of the bracket.

5 is a pendent hanger arm pivoted at 6 to the bracket arm 2 and to the lower end of which is pivoted at 8 a hammer 9 that is capable of swinging inwardly and upwardly relative to the gong 3 by turning upon the pivot at S. The hammer 9 is provided with an upwardly extending Vfinger 10 that is adapted to 'bear against the outer tace of the pendent arm 5 above the pivot point 8 and for the reception of which a recessed seat 7 is preferably produced in the pendent arm. The pendent arm 5 is provided with a stop stem 11 located at the inner side of the arm and which is adapted to strike against the central portion ot' the gong 3 for the purpose of limiting the inward movement of said arm.

in the manner to be explained. The spring 12 is connected to the bracket 1 and to the pendent arm 5 in any suitable manner and preferably by the attachment. of the ends of the spring to a hook 1- upon the bracket and a hook 5a upon the pendent arm.
The herein described door bell is adapted to be attached to the trame of the door above the door therein and in such manner that the hammer 9 will hang suspended into a position that will cause it to be struck by the door when said door is opened. Then as the door is opened it strikes against the hammer and moves it, together with the pendent arm 5 by which it is supported, in an outward direction, as indicated in dotted lines Fig. I. At this time the hammer is restrained from outward movement relative to the pendent arm by the bearing of the stop finger 10 against the pendent arm. The continued opening of the door causes said door to be carried away from a position beneath the hammer with the result of the hammer escaping from the top of the door, thereby permitting the controlling spring 12 to move the pendent arm inwardly toward the gong 3. The inward movement of the pendent arm continues until the stop stem 11 strikes against the gong 3 and restrains the arm from further movement, after which the hammer pivoted to said arm swings upwardly under centrifugal torce to the position indicated by dotted lines Fig. I and strikes the gong 3 to sound it, after which it returns to its normal position. IVhen the door is again closed, the hammer is swung upwardly by the pressure of the door thereagainst in order that the door may pass it and immediately after the door has passed beneath the hammer, said hammer returns to its normal vertical position ready to be again engaged upon the next act ot' opening the door.
