COMM.
Be It known that I, Norman MCCARTY,
The object of my invention is to produce 5 a' 'm ca bio of delivering variabl measur d qhaniii ies of a fluid, and of suc charactor that no material pressure will be exerted upon the mechanism by means of which the amount of delivery is varied, thus making a pump which is especially adapted for use in delivering successively measured, variable quantities of liquid fuel to on inte'rnalcombnstion en of the non-explosive'ty' the adjusting mechanism of the pump mg connected with a speed controlled governor driven by the motor.
The accompanying drawing, which is a vertical section, illustrates an embodiment of my'invention.
In the drawing, 10 indicates a suitable bbdy havmg' a pump chamber 11 orme'd therein. Projected into chamber 11, through a suitable packing gland 12, is a displacing plunger 13 which may conven- Ien y have a uniform stroke produced in andesired manner, as, for lnstance, by means of the arm 14 carried by stra 15 surrounding an eccentric 16 carried y shaft I7: Leading into chamber 11 is a su ply pipe 18 in which is arranged the usual inwardjy opening check valve 19, and leading from chamber 11 is a discharge pi e 21 in which is mounted the usual outwar ly openin' check valve 22. Also pro'ccted mto ch ber 11, through a. suitable packing "land 23, is a compensating plunger 24.
ung'er 24 at its outer end, 13 formed into a plunger 25 which passes through a suitable 'acking land 26 Into a ressure chamber 7 into w ich is introduce through a suitable ipe 28, a ielding fluid pressure of stifliclent amoun to propel plunger 24 throu h the packing ofidglnnd 23 when pluu gar 1 is being retract u Plunger 24 in its outward stroke, needs to be definitely and uniform] limited, and any: desirable slop run be m opted for this pa pose. Probably he most convenient entlstruction however is to provide a shoulder 8'! in chamber 27 against which the end I caused to engage stop 35,
with a roller 34 ada ted to cage of plunger 25 will be driven and thus limit the outward movement of plunger 24.
In order to vary the suction eil'ect of plunget 13 upon the contents of supply ipe 18, an adjustable stop mechanism need; to be provided to variably limit the inward stroke of the compensating plunger 24, and for this purpose I secure to plunger 24, at 32, a lever 33 which is provided at its outer end ge an adjustable stop 35, sai stop bem adjustably mounted in an arm 36 carried by a bracket- 37. Lever 33 is provided with an intermediate slot 38 into which is projected a pivot pin 39 carried by an arm 40. Pin 39 is also projected into a slot 41 formed in bracket 37, said slot lying at an angle which is substantiall coincident with the an ular osition of ever 33 and its slot 38 w en \ston 24 is in its outermost position so that, in this position there may be a, shifting of pin 39 without producin any swinging movement of the lever 33. no 40 is carried by an eccentric strap 43 mounted upon an eccentric 44 carried by a rock shaft 45, which may be rocked by suitable connections 46 with a speed controlled governor 47.
lVith the parts adjusted as shown in the drawing the operation is as follows :V\'ith the displacing plunger 13 at the end of its out-ward, or suction, stroke, compensating plunger 24 has been driven inward by the pressure within chamber 27 until roller 34 engages head 35 and as this movement of plunger 24 has been (to-extensive, in displacemrnt volume, with the withdrawal of plunger 13, there will have been no flow of material from supply pi e 18 into chamber 11 and consequently, wicn plunger 13 is projected into the pump chamber ll,plunger 24 will be driven out of the chamber 11. by the pressure exerted by plunger 13, lllllll the end of plunger 2 engages stop 31 which will not be until plunger 13 has reached the inner end of its stroke. Consequently there will be no discharge through pipe 21. Durlog all of this time the only prrssurc. bryoml the more weight of lever 33, upon pivot ill], was during the time when whorl ill was in rngugvun-nt with stop 35 and amounted to not more than twice the total prcssuw exerted in am the inner and of plunger 2 which, 0 course. m't'd not be great. lly shilling pin 31) to the left, roller ill will he and thus pl'm'cfll Ill!) l'll further inward movement of plunger 24, be-
fore plunger 13 has finished its outward i of stroke. Consequently a quantity of li aid will be drawn into the map, more or ess depending upon the di erences in volume movement of the two plungers and, upon the return or inward stroke of the displacing plun er 13. plunger 24 will be driven outwar ly to its stop before plunger 13 will have finished its inward stroke and there will be a consequent discharge of liquid from the pump. It will be noticed that, by this arrangement, no definite proportion be tween the displacement volume of the two plungers l3 and 24 need be rovided becapse the inward movement of t e compensating plunger is a yielding movement Wl'llCl merely follows the outward movement of the plunger 13 and therefore can at no time exceed, in volume, the volume withdrawal of the plunger 13. On the return or inward stroke of lunger 13 the compensating plunger 24 is forced outward] volume for volume, by the plunger 13, until the positive sto 31 is reached.
y this construction, it will be apparent, that I have succeeded in avoiding it did:- cult which has heretofore existed in pumps of this general type where, because of a positive connection between the displacing plunger and compensating plunger, very great care had to be exercised in accurately proportioning the two plungers.
I claim as my invention:
