KEYLESS SOCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Der. I4, 1909.
Application Bled January 2, 1909. Serial lo. 470,284.
To all whom it may concem:
Be itknown that I, Haurex* Hrmsu., a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Keyless Socket, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of keyless sockets and has for its object a simplified construction, a reduced number of parts and an arrangement of arts that will enable me to 'eatl shorten t ie base and to produce a soc et w ich shall be highly ornamental in appearance and adapted for.
decorative use and shall be very much smaller both in diameter and length than any socket of this character heretofore produced. With these and other objects in view I have devised the novel keyless socket which I will now describe, referring to the accompanying drawin s fortuin a part of this specilication an using re erence characters to indicate the several parts.
Figure 1 is an elevation of my novel socket on a greatly enlarged scale, partly broken away, to show the construction and arrange ment of thc arts; Fi 2 a plan view of the cap bushing detac ted; Fig. 3 a lan view of the insulating cap disk detac ed; Fig. 4 an inverted plan view of the insulating base detached; Fi 5 a section on the line 5-5 in Fig. l loo ting in the direction of the arrows; and Fi?. 6 is an elevation of my novel socket, actua size.
ing lining, 12 the insulating base, 13 the socket shell and 14 the cap. The base, which is lunch shorter than in any previous construction, comprises n lower portion indicated by 15, a reduced upper poltion indipreferably of mica, and engages a nut 23 whlch is recessed into the top of the base (see Fig. 4).
24 denotes a contact which is formed integral with the central plate, is bent to lie in a recess 25 in the base and is provided with a binding screw QG.
The head of screw 20 lies under the insulating disks 22, engages the bottom of the screw shell, pass-'es through the base and engages a contact 27 lying in a recess 2S in the base and carrying a binding` screw 29.
The cap 1s provided at its lower end with a female thread 30 which receives thread 18 on the socket shell. Thread 30 is covered by on exterior collar 3l, the lower edfre of which is curved inward forming a finis 1 for the lower end of the oa the upper end belng closed inward and llocked at the upper end of the thread. This collar conceals the uns' htly appearance of the thread and also rein orces and strengthens the lower end of the cap makin" it firm and ri'id. At the upper end of tle cap, in the position shown, is a bushing indicated by 32 which is secured in the cap by closing the metal about it and also b rivets if required. This bushing is provi ed with a downwardly extendmg lug 33 which enga es a recess 34 in the base and prevents the ase from turning in the shell. Between bushing 32 and the base is an insulating disk indicated by 35. This disk is provided with cuts 36 to ermit n g Bap 3T to be pressed inward tierefrom 10 denotes the screw shell, 1l the insulatwhich lies in contact with lug 33. Between the reduced upper portion 16 of the base and the ca is an insulating ring.r 38 which insulates tie contacts and binding screws ,i from the cap. The upper edge of this ring cated hy 1G and between these portions an annular shoulder indicated by l?. The insulnting lining.r is secured to the screw shell in any suitable manuel' as by a drive fit. The lowcr portion 15 of thc base is of practically the saine diameter as insulating lining 11 which ahnte against it. At the upper end of the socket shall is a rolled mule thread indicated h v 18, the upper ond of which uhuts against the annular shoulder on the huso. 'lho screw shell is .secured to the hase hy menus of .i central svn-w 1l) and a screw 20. 'lho central screw passes lhlout'h a central plate 2l which is adapted lo hc engaged hy tho conter contar-t of a lamp (not. shown). through insulating; disks 2Q engages the insulatingr lining disk and the lower edge engages annular shoulder 17 on the base. By reducing the diameter of the upper and lower portions of the base leaving the annular shoulder, it is rendered unnecessary to carry insulating lining 1l the entire length of the base. 'l` his enables me to reduce the diameter of the cap to the extent of double the thickness of the insulating lining, at thc saine time providing n shoulder which anchors the` hase in position through the engagement therewith of insulating rino* 38 and the upper cud of tht` screw shell.
ln assembling, thel sort-w shell and insulating lining nrc placed within the socket shell, the annular shoulder on the huso resting on the upper end ofthe thread on the socket sh ll. he upper end of the base is then placed in the cap with lug 33 iu engement with the corres onding recess in t e base. This locks the ase, screw shell, insulating lini and cap against rotation relatively to eac other. The male thread on the socket shell is then placed in engagement with the thread on the cap and turned to lace.
lphe assage of the current is as follows: from inding screw 29 and contact 2T through' screw 20 to the screw shell and the lam and returning from the center contact of t e lamp through central plate 21 and contact 24 to binding screw 26.
Having thus described my invention I claim: i
1. A socket comprising two metal members having a threaded connection, abase having an annular shoulder and having a screw shell secured to it, means whereby said annular shoulder is clamped when said members are screwed together, and an insu lating lining interposed between said screw shell and one of said metal clamping members.
2. A socket comprising a socket shell and a cap secured together by male and female threa a base havin an annular shoulder clampe between portions of said shell and cap and having a screw shell secured to it and project' into the socket shell, an insulating lining etween said screw shell and socket shell, and means for locking the base and cap a inst independent rotation.
3 A socet comprisin a socket shell and a cap secured together y male and female threads7 a base having an annular shoulder which is engaged by the end of the male thread, a bushing secured in the ca and a lug extending from the bushing undp en aging the base to retain said bushing and use against independent rotation.
4. A socket com rising a socket shell having a male thread), a cap having a female thread, u base having upper and lower p tions and between said portions an annular shoulder which is engaged li the end of the male thread, a bushing in t e ce having a lug engaglinv the base, an insu ating disk between t e hashing and the base and an insulating rin inclosing the upper portion of the base an lyin between the insulating disk and the annu r shoulder.
5. A socket comprisin a socket shell and a cap secured together y male and female threads, a base having upper and lower portions and between said portions an annular shoulder, the end of the male thread inclosing the lower portion and en aging the shoulder, means for retaining tli'e cap and base against independent rotation and an insulating rin inclosing the upper portion of the base an engaging the shoulder.
6. A socket comprisinc a socket shell and a cap secured together y male and female threads, a base having an annular shoulder enga ed by the end o the male thread and a re uced upper portion, contacts thereon and an insulating ring inclosing said upper portion and the contacts.
7. A socket comprisi a cap secured together y male and female threads, a base having an annular shoulder enga ed by the end of the male thread and a re uced upper end, a center plate secured to the base, a contact integral with said late, a screw shell, a contact secured to the ase and connected to the screw shell and an insulating ringl inclosing the upper end of the base and t e contacts.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
HARVEY HUBBELL.
