SHOCK-ABSORBER.
Specification of Lcttcrs'Patent- Patented Dee}, 11 1;, 190%.
Application filed June 19, 1909. v Serial No. 503,083.
To all whom it may concern:
lie. it. known that 1, Jason H. FRIEDEN- with, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, lilaryland have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoch-Absorbers, of which the following is a specification. Y
My invention relates to improvements in shock absorbers designed more especially for use inconnection with motor vehicles, and consists in the novel construction and 4 arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described, andparticnlarly set forth in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figu're 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 aid'etailed view.
Referring by reference characters toth'is drawino', theshock absorber is shown as comprising a pair of upper links 1, which are pivotally connected to each-other and to a suitable part of the body of thecnr mdicated'at 2, by a pivot. pin 3. These links have their lower ends pivotally connected by V pivots st to a pair of cross arms 5 which are. pivotally connected together at. 6 and have their lower ends pivotally connected bypivo'ts 7 with the npper ends of links 8, which are duplicates-of the links 1 but reversedfin position. The links 8 have their lowerends pivotally connected by a pivot pin 9-whicht is also in connection with a clip 10, which is secured-in any suitable manner to the axle,
of the car indicated at 10 The two sets of pivots and connecting cross arms thins described constitute a doubled toggle joint con-; 'struction. The pivots +1 and 7 are provided with projections which are. designed -to be connected by elastic means. I prefer to make the elastic connections in the form shown in the drawings,-in which a rod 10 1 is'provided having one end secured to a cross piece 11' andguided at the other end by a similarcross piece 11? throuirh an'opci-iing:
in which it projects, the'projectingportion being connected to the-extended part of the corresponding pin 4. The cross piece. or bl' f 'zk i1 carriesside bars or rods 12, which priject through openings in the cross piece or block 11 and are connected by a suitable lnraelzet l3 wit'lrthe extension of the other pivot pin 4. it will thus be seen that as the spring 14, encircling the rod 10 between the 3 two cross pieces. The links 1 and 8 are all prefeably curved outwardly as shown to term as it were hooks 15, which are connected by spring devices 16 similar to those which extend between the pivots -l4t and 7--7, these vertically disposed spring devices acting in opposition to the transverse spring device.
It will be understood-of course that this device is used in. connection with and supplementalto the ordinary vehicle springs and I have not deemed it necessary to show such springs in the presentdrawing.
As the ordinary springs yield under the influence of inequalities in the road and'the body lowers the transverse springs are placed under a rapidly increasing tension, 'thus tending to assist the main springs and relieve them ofundue strain and prevent breaking; While when on rebound. the main --1. In a shock absorber, 'a pair of crossed arms pivotally connected ..ogether, l nks" connecting the opposite ends of the arms with a vehicle axle and vehicle body respew tively, and horizontally and vertically dis,- posed springs connected to act at right ang les to each otheron said crossed arms, substantially as described.
2. In a shock; absorber device, a'pair of crossed arms pivotally connected together,
links pivotal'ly connectin the upper ends with a vehicle body, linl lower ends of the crossed arms withthe axle, horizontally disposed elastic devices extendin;, across the toggle frames formed by said arms and links, and vertically disposed elastic devices extending between the ext-remities of the upper and lower links.
in a shock absorber, a pair of crossed arms pivotally connectedtogether, links pivotally connecting the upper ends with a vebible body, links for connecting the lower er it s connecting the y said links having extended hooked ends,
horizontally disposed elastic devices extending across the toggle frames formed by said arms and links, and vertically disposed elastic devices extending between said hooked ends of the upper and lower, links.
JACOB H. FRIEDENWALD.
