To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL S. VVAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residin at Denver, in the State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill-Steel Holding and Packing cation. I
The present invention relates more partic- Y ularly to chucks for-rock drills, and especially those known as sinkers and drifter-s,
in connection withwhich fluid is introduced1 into the drill holes for the purpose of re uo" ing the cuttings-from the working of the drill steel. The invention, however,i;is
not necessarily limited to this-type of drills.
;.The primary object of the prescnt'invention is-to provide a structure in which'the means in plaoe, and toso efilistruct the means that a simpleform otnup-pecking may be employed, which will not be subjected to the excessive wear ordinarily occasioned upon packing where drill steels that are angular in cross section are employed,
the angular portions of which engage-the packing.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein 1-- Figure 1' is longitudinal sectional View through a. potion of a rock drilling machine, showing the'iinproved chuck in place, with-the driil steel therein. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Figs. 3 and 4: are respeotively, cross sectional views on the lines I 3-3 end i--4r oft .t. Fig. 5 a detail perspective view the end of the/r"- wtor rel. a sit 'lar View oi tne outer Fig. 4' is a side elevation of .rill steel. Figs. 8 and .5 are ce numerals d signate corresnonding 3o? Q13 in the figures of the. drawings. in the embodiment disclosed, the motor barrel iifisl llii'iQ/(l by the reference nui, and o eretiug therein is the usual reciprocetery piston (notshown). The end of the barrel inwhieh theohuck is placed is tudinall'y split, as shown at 1*, and has iuced portionl that is threaded. Fit- Specification of Letters Patent.

' ted into the said end is a chuck comprising sections 7 and 7}. The inner section 7 extends into the barrel beyond the slits 1, and is snugly fitted therein with a ground joint d0 so that no leakage can occur. This inner section has abore therethrough that is circular in cross section. It is furthernuiar recess of seat 7. The'outer section '7 also fits snugly within the end of thebarrel,
and has an outer-tapered end 4=2 projecting preferably squar e, though any polygonal therefrom; Tjhi s 'section 7 has a borethere through thst lie-angular in cross, sect-ion,
configuration'inaybe employed. lnterpo sed between the sections is-aniordinary cu ped.
through that is circular in ross section, a j washer '25 being also preferably interposed between the section 7.
that is threaded on the r packing and the. outer IhHQk For. the purpose of efiectively retainirg uced pottmixi'fll," and has a tapered opening in its end that;
receives the beveled portion 42 of the outer 1.80
section. This cap. has suitable sockets arneter of the barrel 1.
receive a spanner ring, and the threaded The diameter of the cap 26 In order to hold the cap 26 a ainst acci dental displacelnent'and also e eotively secure the chuck sections in place, with the outer section held against rotation in the barrel, a clamping ring 11; is employed that is split as shown at 11*. This ring engages the inner end of the cap which it surrounds and also the barre-1., 'Adraw bolt 10 passes transversely through the split portion'of the ring, and said bolt also extends through a transverse opening Pin the barrel, and a transversely disposed socket in. the outer chuck section '17. It will be evident therefore that when the bolt 10 is tightened, the flange or the cap 26 will be brought down flush with the outer face of the barrel, and the whole will be clamped upon thechuck, while the engagement of the draw-bolt 10 with the outer section of said chuck, positively prevents the rdtationofthe some in the barrel.
In connection with thisstructure, a drill steel 44 is provided. with a ldngitudina-l channelsthrough Which-the fluid is carried to eject cuttings from'the drill hole.
' I Thls drill steel has a portion 46 thalt is angular' in cross section, said angular portionin the angular conforming to and fitting I The inner end hereof the chuck section 7 Y 47 of said drill steel is circular in cross section,'and passes through the packing washerand through the inner section 7 of the chuck. II II I -With thisstructure, it will be evident that leakage is effectively prevented and the wear on the packin socket 7 i nor'cansaid chuck rotatein the I ipartsli lthlis beingefiectively held against 1 necessary lon'gitii 20 Wlll not 'be excessive inasmuch as it ears againsta circular surface. However, if Wear does occur, it will be seen that'such -Wear will be taken up by the pressure against the packing Washer, the constituting a pressure chamber in which the fluid may enter, holding said ywasher at all'times against the drill steel.
' The said steel fjcannot rotate in the chuck, barrel, the
relative "maria d yet. permitting the al movements of the drill steel. I I
From the going it is thought that the construction, operation andmany advanderstoodf.;t hat various vstripe,'"proport on and 'struct'iori 'maybe resorted' to; without departing i rom the tagesi of the hereinjdescribed invention will be apparent to those. skilled in the art without further, description, and itwill eunchanges in the size, minor details of conspirit orsa'crifi'cing any of the advantages of'the invention:
