W. H. DOLBY. DIRECTION AND DISTANCE LOUATOR. APPLICATION-FILED NOV. 1,1907.

DIRECTION AND DISTANCE LOCATOB.
Application filed November 1, 1907.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM H. Donny, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nicholsville, in the county or Clermont anc State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Direction and Distance Locators, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a distance and direction locator for maps, being particularly directed to an implement adapted for use with ordinary maps or the like and serving as an aid in determining the distance and direction of any given point to any desired point on the map.
The main object of the present invention is the production of an implement adapted primarily for use with maps or the like and serving to permit the user, in con unction with the scale of miles noted on the map to readily determine the distance and direction of any desired point from any given point.
The invention in its preferred form will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view in plan of the improved implement. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of a modified form of implement. Fig. l is a section on line l4: 01 Fig. 8.
Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, wherein is shown the preferred toi'm ot' the implement, l designates an annular band, preferably constructed of a narrow strip of thin metal, terminally secured to form the ring shown. series or wire threads 2 are secured diametrically ot' the band, crossing at a central point at 5, as shown. The threads 2 may be in any desired number, and are preferably as thin as consistent with desired rigidity.
Referring to Figs. 3 and et, wherein is shown a slightly modified form of the invention, it will be noted that the implement comprises the annular band 4: and threads 5 similar to the band and threads in the preferred form. In addition to these elements the modified form includes a second hand 6 through which the threads pass, and which is arranged within and concentric with the band a. The modified form of implement is also provided with a radially disposed l i l Patented Dec. '17, icon.
Serial No. 4=0Q,217.
handle 7 for convenience in the use of the implement.
1n use, it being assumed that the distance and direction from a given point, as one city to another city is desired, the implement is laid upon the map with the central point 3 at one city and one of the threads always pointing north, one of the other threads 2 will be projected near to or on the point on the map indicating the other city. There will thus be provided a straight line between the particular cities which being measured in accordance with the scales of miles indicated on the map will accurately indicate the distance in miles and also the direction between the particular cities. The band 1 is serviceable in providing an indicating line equidistant at all points from the central point, so that the user may quickly determine the relative distances of any two cities from a particular city.
The form shown in Figs. 2 and 4: are used identically with that -form previously described, eXcept that the band 6 provides an additional circular indicating line.
It is, of course, to be understood that the implement may have any number of thread members and any desired number of concentrically disposed bands, and that these bands may be relatively spaced for use with particular maps, so that any distance may be provided between certain bands. Furthermore, the implement may be adapted for particularly scaled maps by indicating on one or more of the spokes the scale of miles for that particular class ofmaps, or the respective thread members may each have different scales, so that practically any desired scale will be indicated on one of the threads.
The device will also be very useful in map drawing. Thus by placing the center of the indicator upon the center of the supposed map in such manner that the diametric threads indicate the cardinal and interme diate points of the compass, and using the scale of miles as determining the distance' any town or other object may be readily located at its proper position both as to distance and direction. Roads, rivers, railroads, or the like may be similarly outlined in a simple, expeditious and correct manner.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1- An implement of the class described CO1I1- prising an annular band arranged on edge and a series of threadlike members disposed diametrically of and terminally secured to the band, said members crossing each other at the center of the band and forming a central point from Which the respective members radiate in relatively opposite directions, and a handle projecting radially from the hand, one of said members extending beyond 10 the band and through the handle to secure the latter in place.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
