CONNECTION-BOSETTE FOR ELECTRIC WIRES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 4', 1909.
Application filed July 25, 1908. Serial No. 445,380.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Janus L. Bmrror. citizen of the United States, residing at Plainville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connecthin-Rosettes for Electric ires, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electrical appliances such as are employed in making connections between main and secondary electric wires and in which provision is made for automatically destroying said connection if it is subjected to a current of greater power than that for which it is intended. These appliances are generally known as rosettes and comprise two parts adapted to be disconnected and provided with means for interposing a fusible wire in the circuit formed when they are joined. It being a great desideratmn to so construct these parts that they may be effectively connected and disconnected with facility and despatch. the object of my invention is the provision of a construction that will insure the fulfilment thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the under side of the fixed member of a rosette. Fig.2 is a plan view of the upper side of the removable member of a rosette. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. & is a sectional view on line 1-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the relation of the two members of the rosette when they are secured to each other. Fig. (3 is a sectional view on line 66 of Fig. 2, and, Fig. 7 is a sectional view showing members of the device in assembled relation.
Like numerals designate similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings. numerals 1 and 2 designate respectively the fixed and removable members of a rosette constructed in accordance with my invention and composed of porcelain or other insulating material. On the under side of fixed member 1 are arcuate grooves 3 and the outer walls of which are very slightly eccentric to the vertical axis of the rosette. A depression 5 having the same depth as these grooves conto secure curved contact pieces 8 and 9 respectively in grooves 3 and 5 and also to clamp the terminals of feed wires 10 to the contact pieces. Feed wires 10 pass through a perforation 11 in the center of member 1 which communicates with depression A rib 12 is formed around the edge of the upper side of member 1 to provide a suitable bearing surface 13 which will insure proper clearance to the ends of screws 6 and 7 and nuts threaded thereon when said member secured to the wall or ceiling by screws 1lpassing through countersunk holes Adjacent its lower edge fixed member 1 is slightly reduced and tapered at 16 for the reception of a similarly internally tapered flange 17 on the upper side of removable member 2. Rising from the upper surface of said removable member are curved projections 19 and 20 of the same general contour as grooves 8 and 4, and adapted to readily enter said grooves when the members are properly applied to each other. Con forming to projections 19 and 20 respectively are contact pieces 21 and 22 each being secured at one end by their respective screws and 2 1 which also serve as clamping screws for fuse wires Each of the clamps 26 secures at one extremity the end of one of the fuse wires 25 and at the other extremity one of the terminals of branch wires 2? which pass through a perforation 28, said clamps being secured by screws 29 inserted in holes 30 which are countersunk on the under side of removable member 2 for the reception of slotted nuts 31 as shown in Fig. 41. which also shows that screws 23 and 24: are similarly secured.
Referring to Fig. 5 it may be clearly seen that if removable member 2 be slightly turned in the direction of the arrow A. from the position in which it is shown the projections 19 and 20 will readily enter grooves 8 and 1 respectively in fixed member 1; then if it be turned in the opposite direction the eccentricity of the outer walls of grooves 3 and 4 will cause a binding action between the two members, the friction produced being sufiicient to secure them rigidly together, yet obviously, when occasion requires their disconnection may be easily and quickly acnects obliquely opposite ends thereof which complished. The free ends of contact pieces are provided with perforations for the reception of screws 6 and 7. Said screws serve l 21 and 22 are bent upward so that when the two members of the rosette are joined they will bear with some pressure against contact pieces 8 and 9 respectively, tiereby insuring a perfect circuit.
Changes may be made in the form and arrangement or the features of this device without departure from the principle of the invention, and it is distinctly to be understood that it is not limited to the exact construction shown and set forth.
It will be observed that on one of the members of the rosette I mold eccentric projections which act as cams and that these projections are adapted to enter grooves in the other section the grooves being also molded in their section. lVhen said projections are fitted in the grooves and when one section is turned with respect to the other the two sections or members are positively locked together with a cam action. This provides a construction which can be inexpensively made and one wherein the two members or sections can be rigidly related. It will be obvious that the cam projections are wholly independent of the usual c011- tacts. The grooves to which allusion has been made are connected by a cross groove as 5 in which wires can be placed to lead to contacts bottomed in the curved grooves.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is,
1. A device of the class described comprising a fixed member having eccentric grooves formed therein; contact pieces secured in said grooves; a removable member having curved projections thereon adapted to engage the eccentric grooves in the tired memand contact pieces conforming to said projections and adapted to bear against the contact pieces secured in the eccentric grooves oi. the fixed member.
2. In a device of the class described the combination with an eccentrically grooved member of a member having curved projections to enter and traverse the grooves of said grooved member; contact pieces secured in the grooves of the grooved member; contact pieces secured to the member having the projections and conforming to said projections and fuse clamps secured to one of the members.
3. In a device of the class described the combination with an eccentrieally grooved member having a reduced and tapered periphery at one end, of a member having curved projections to enter and traverse the grooves of said grooved member and provided with an internally tapered flange; contact pieces secured in the grooves oil. the grooved member; contact pieces secured to the member having the projections and conforming to said projections and fuse clamps secured to one of the members.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
