Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. '7, 1909.
Application filed August 8, 1908. Serial No. 447,803.
To all whom 'it may concem:
Be it known that I, Go'rrnnm sormnmnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blufi'ton, in the county of \Vells and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Fence-Brace, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in fence braces.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of fence braces, and to provide a simple, strong and durable fence brace of com aratively inexpensive construction, adapte to be applied to the corner or terminal post of a fence, and capable of firmly supporting such post in an upri ht position and of enabling the same to withstand the strain incident to wire fences.
A further ob'ect ofthe invention is to provide a fence race capable of adjustment to tighten either the u per or lower ortion of the post and provi ed with three ed operating means, which will be capable of ready adjustment to relieve and free the parts, should the same become fast through the rusting of the threads.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto ap ended; it being understood that various c anges in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing:-Figure 1 is a side elevar tion of a fence brace, constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to the terminal post of thefence. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the bearing plate. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the base plate.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawin I 1 designates a base late designed to be arranged upon the sur ace of the ground and provided with an upwardly projecting polygonal block or support 2'. consisting of an integral upwardly extending enlargement having an inclined seat 3 in its upper face for the lower end of'an inclined bracing member 4. The seat is formed by grooving the upper face of the projecting support 2, the grooves extending from the inner side and terminating short of the rear face. The support is provided with a rear wall 5. The rear wall has an inner inclined face 6 to fit gle lower end of the inclined bracing mem- The bracing member 4 is preferably tubular, as shown, to provide a socket at itsu per end for the reception of a nut 7, but 1) racing member may'be constructed of angle iron, or any other material, a suitable socket being provided at the u er end for the said nut. The lower end 0 the inclined bracing member is secured in the seat 3 by means of a projecting stud 8, piercing the lower end of the bracing member and threaded at its upper portion to receive a nut 91 The stud, which may be mounted on the support 2.in any preferred manner, is adapted to prevent the bracing member from rotating. The seat 3 presents a curved face to the lower end of the tubular bracing member and conforms to the configuration of the same.
The nut 7 is cylindrical to fit within the upper end of the tubular member, and it is provided at its outer end with an annular flange forming a head 10 to fit against the upper end of the tubular member, as clearly il ustrat'ed in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The nut, which receives an operating screw 11, is split longitudinally at 12 to permit it to expand and loosen the said screw 11, should the parts become fast through the rusting of the threads, which is liable to occur as the fence brace is'exposed to all kinds of weather. The split nut is maintained in its closed po sition to properly engage the screw threads by means of a set screw 13, piercing the tubular bracingmember and engaging an in-t;
dentation 14 of the nut to event rotary movement of the same within the tubular- 'tion of the post may.,gbeadjnstedabylengtlr ening the inclined brace formed by the brac ing member and the ad'usting meansA' -T vent the plate from slippipge upward on the eye by means of a be base p ate, which is maintained in,
