Application filed Decemberf21, 1904. Serial No. 237,857.
. y. To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. MAC- DONALD, a resident of Bridgeport, Connectieut, have invented a new and useful Iniprovement in Phonic Apparatus, which invention isfully set Aforth in the following specification.
This invention relates to machines. for recording and reproducing sounds, andparticularly to machines of the type wherein frietional force is employed to actuate a diaphragm or other secondary vibrating means, the sonorous vibrations 4being' employed to modify such frictional `force and to mold it, so to speak,`into the form of sound. waves. Apparatus of this type is described in U. S.'.Patent(1\lo. 678,566, granted July 16, 1901, to Daniel Higham.
The object of the present invention isto. l
furnish mechanism forA carrying out, in a practical way, the'invention of said patent, and other improvements invented by said Higham which have not yet been made public, and which are shown herein although they are not. of my invention.
The improvements constituting the 'res-- ent invention will be clearly understood rom the following description, taken in 'connection with the accompanying drawings, whereinl i A Figure 1 is a front elevation andF ig. 2 is cross-section Aof a graphphone which, except as hereinafter pointed out, is or may be of any known orsu'itable type; Fig.. 3 is.
a plan View ofa detail;- Fig. 4 is a View, with parts 1n section, of the. combined weight-lifting and carrlage feed-dlsconnecting means, embodied in a graphophone not.
employing the intermediate sound-amplifying means illustrated in the preceding tigures. F 1g. 5 1s av frontview of-Fig. 4.-; and
Fig. 6 is a detail of a reproducer embodying part of the invention. y
The main object of the present invention is to provide for the mounting of the friction means uponthe longitudinelly-movable carriage which, in the graphophone and other leading machines, supports lthe recorder or ieproducer. Heretofore it has been proposed to mountthe friction-means upon a fixed support, andfto rotateand ad-- vance the mandrel carrying the record-cylinder.
- ln the drawings, .the vcarriznge- A(l, the tube upon which the carriage is niounted and for the pulley- 10 and the sha-ft 11. The
pulley. 1,0 is carried by a. sleeve A11st which is arranged to run in a fixed'sleeve 12 which is fastened to the upright end 9 of the frame. 'lhrough this'revolving sleevev l-i passes theyshaft 11. rlhe shafthas aI splinegroove 15 cut in it as shown, in which the screw 1G in the revolving sleeve 1l engages. As the pulley 1 0 revolvesit will therefore revolve the Vshaft 11, at the same time alllowing t-he shaft freedom to slide back and forth with the carriage. @n the other'end of this shaft 11. is attached the friction-roll. 1T, which is provided with .a shallow l!- Shapedgroove', in which a friction shoe 18 is fitted. This shoe is hinged in the center at 1 9, as shown. One end of .this shoe is attached to the center of the diaphragm at Q() by the link 21. lTo the vother end is attached the` link Q2` which connects tothe end of' theprdinary or any' suitable reproducer leverf23, as shown. A; small spring 24 serves to keeptheend of the shoe pressed against the friction'roll17. 0n theextreme end of the shaft 11 isplaced the weight 25. The bearing of 4the-sliding shaft 11i-n Vthe carriage isnotfixed but is hungyon a stirrup 26 .which is pivoted on the screw 2T. '.lhegactionl of the weight v525 therefore is toV force down the carriage end of the'shaft; this same weighty aeting asa constant pressure in the 'friction 'shoe effects an *automatic adjustment of the 'friction by; gravity,
The frame 1in which the diaphragm is mounted isl fixed .to the carriage, and the carriage itself is not lifted, vas heretofore, to disen age', the 'stylus Q3 from -the record cylinc er. Said stylus is, as shown, pivoted toA a weight 81, which in tu1n"is .pivoted4 at 32 to the carriage, and has an extension.
-33 lwhich contacts `with the' lifting cam 34 .tolift the weight. The latter is constructed rThis limprovement may befusefully applied to machines in which the .diaphragm is operated directlyfrom the sound record Awithout `internnnliate friction, 'or other lll] pas
sonndampifying, means. Such application ofthe sald improvements is illustrated in digsidn and 5. Vln these .gures, the weight is -pivoted to the casing .at 32, and has *I an: extension 33,.which contacts with the lifting cam 34 to lift the weight.` Thepivoted' j'aveightl is prov'ide'dfwith 4means .for centering it-When lifted by cam 34. This centering device consists of a thin metal plate having a,circular hole 37 through which passes the limit pin 38 `(Fig. 6).
Extending npwardlynfrom this hole is a slot 39' into which the pin enters and by' which the weight is centered when raised. lVhen lowered, the size of the hole 37 allows to the pin 38 all'play necessary for adjustment.
lier the purpose of securely clamping 'the reproducer casing 30 in t-he lyre-shaped.
frarneiO, there is rovidedr between the two ranches 41 thereo a Ascrew 42, of which the headis connectedl to one branch, andi the point engages the other. In the middle of this screw is fastened a milled nut 43 which,
- when rotated either one way or the other,
draws the branches together, or permits them to spring apart slightly. 'When thev re- .producer is to be placed'in position in :the
frame, the nut is given a left-hand turn which permits the branches to slightly spring apart. The reproducercasing may their be dropped into position, and there securely .clamped lay-imparting a right-hand to the nut43, which causes the two sides nf the lyre to be drawn slightly together.4
. The mounting of the friction roll on a shaft which has a swinging bearing so that it rests by gravity in the friction shoe, and Athe particular form of friction-means h erein fshown and described are not of my invenstaticihary part of the frame.
i2. in a phonic apparatus, the combination with primary and secondaryv vibrating means, of intermediate friction means inciuding a friction'roll and shoe, a movable carriage supporting said friction means, a shaft carrying said roll and having a bearing on said carriage, a rotating sleeve having a bearing on the frame, and a connection whereby said shaft rotates with said sleeve but can slide freely therein` i '3. ln a. phonic apparatus, the combination with primary and secondary vibrating means, of intermediate friction means including a friction roll and shoe, a movable carriage supporting 'said' friction means, a
