FLUID-PRESSURE REGULATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application. filed April 20, 1909.
Patented Nov. 30, 1909.
Serial No. 491,148.
'lluid delivery irrespective oi the initial pressure while the latter is equal to or exceeds the desired delivery pressure and, in the absence of the initial pressure, the apparatus will serve to etl'ect a practically complete diseontimiance of the tluid delivery until the pressure thereof is reestablished to the requisite amount.
The invention consists in the novel construction and adaptation of devices, as will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing which represents in vertical section a regulator constructed in accordance with this invention.
.'lhe relerenunumeral 5 designates ing provided with a valve chamber t' a casand a superposed diaphragm chamber 7 which is couuuuuicatively connected therewith by a duct h. cover-part 5' is provided for the chamber T and is arranged to be removably secured by clips, such as El, which engage oicr the periph ral llango ltl ol the cover and a ring 1;). llxtendiug transversely across the chamber T is a diaphragm 11. which is secured about its circumt'ercnce between :1 'tlange 12 ot the casing aml the ring 13 which are connected by a plurality of screws ll, as shown. Said screws likewise atl'ord pivotal connections for the clips 9. Said valve chamber (Sis provided with an inlet opening I? and an outletopening 16 which are screw-threadctl or provided with other means tor making pipe connections, and are herein shown in axial alinement with each other, though not necessarily so.
' \l'ithin the valve chamber and intermediate said openings is a partition l7 having an opening 19 constructed to attord a seat 19 below and another s at above the partition.
A stem 2t which is connected with said diaphragm ll, as by socketing in an attaclunent 22, extends downwardly through said opening 18 and has mounted thereupon valves. s3 and 2- which are disposed to cooperate with the respective seats 19 and 20 to close, upon oc -asion, the opening between the inlet and outlet sides 0t said partition. The stem 2L is extended for connection with an ancillary diaphragm which closes an opening 20 in the bottom of the valve chamber aml at the inlet side of the partition. Provided below this diaphragm 25 is a chamber 27 having communi *ation through a passage 2 with the outlet side of the partition. A passage 2% and an annular passage 30 communi 'ate with the passage :28 to atl'ord an uninterrupted llow ot' the fluid from the inlet to the outlet side of the par; tition. These passages constitute a by-pass which may be regulated as to capacity by an adjustable screw 31 which operates to partially close the passage 29. v
Extending through aml depending from the cover-part 5 is a tubular element 32 which is provided with a peripheral flange :33 to furnish a chair for limiting the-downward movement of an annular shaped weight or heavy body il-l. Connected with the diaphragm 1'1 aml extending upwardly through the element 32 is a rod 35 having at its upper extremity an adjustably c011- ucctcd head 36. standard 37 provided upon the cover part 5 supports by a pivotal pin PM a dog 35) which, it allowed to be endent as represented by full lines in the drawing. operates to engage upon the top ot' the head ltl when the latter descends with the closing of the valve it to lock the same against automatically reopening; or the dogmay be caused to be inoperative by swinging it over, as indicated by broken lines (.1, against a stop it) provided in the standard.
The operation of the invention is as follows: 'ith the valves in the positions as shown in the drawing the invention acts in the capacity of a regulator tending to maintain a unit'orm outlet lluid pressure and any variation ol the latter against the underside of the diaphragm it causes a further open ing or closing of the valve 23 to bring about such desired delivery pressure. Should the pressure 'against the underside of the diaphragm 11 be, reduced either by a discontin'uance of the initial pressure or by an excessive fluid delivery, as may be caused by a broken discharge pipe, until the delivery pressure can no longer support the diaphragm l1 aml thev attachments thereto, then the valve it is caused to close upon its seat and will thus remain until a suflicient ressure against the diaphragm ll reesta lished, provided that the. dog 39 is caused to be inoperative, as when the same is thrown OXQI in the position indicated by a.
Should the dog he allowed to be operative, as when hanging in the position indicated by full lines in the view, then it will engage over the head 36 coincidently with the closing of the valve 24 to lock the same against reopening until thedog is manually disengaged to release the valve. Assuming that the dog is inits aforesaid inoperative position and all openings in the delivery pipe are closed, then a resumption of the initial pressure and a flow of the fluid through the by- pass connections 29, and 28 Will afford a gradual accumulation'of pressure at the deli-very side which will ultimately affect the diaphragm ll toreopen the valve 24 The flow of the fluid is accordingly restored through the valve openingand is normally regulated through the agency of the valve 23.
Should the delivery pressure exceed a desired amount the diaphragm 11 will be acted upon to close the valve 23 in opposition to r the force of the weight 34 which must be overcome before the valve 23 can be closed. The diaphragm 25 serves as a balancing agent with referenc e to the valves 23 or 24 and with respect tqifi eiinitia l;- ainl delivery pressures of the fluiill W hat I claim, is
