FINGER PAD.

J G. MARSH, 0F MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
FINGER-PAD.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1909.
Application filed April 2. 1909. Serial No. 487,435.
principally in counting money, sheets of pa-- per, turning the leaves of a book, or other purposes where it is'desired to create considerable friction between the finger of the hand and the article to be operated upon, and to further provide means so that the entire annular area of the pad can be utilized and to provide at the apex or outer end of the pad a ventilating passage disposed approximately at right angles to similar ventilating passages arranged annularly of the pad.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a strong and durable pad which can not be readily torn when engaged with .or removed from the finger.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent as the nature of the invention is better set forth, and it will be understood that changes within the scope of the claims may be resorted to. without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate snnilarparts intheseveral Viewsr-Figure l is a detail perspective viewof the pad showing it in its operative position upon the finger. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the pad. Fig. 3 1s a transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. at is a detail side elevation of a slightly modified form of pad.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, there is shown a pad 1 which is preferably formed of rubber or elastic material that will yieldto an extent and that will offer considerable resistance when it is frictionally engaged with the articles to be operated upon.. The pad herein shown is of hollow form and in shape conforms to the contour of the finger upon which the pad is engaged. The pad is provided with a curved front end 2 in which is formed a ventilating passage 3 arranged in hne with the longitudinal axis of the pad and approximately at right angles to similar but smaller passages or perforations 4 formed in the body )ortion of the pad and arranged annularly thereof. The said ventilating passages or perforations afi'ord means for creating between the finger and the walls of the pad a good circulation of air to prevent sweating or numbness of the finger as will be fully appreciated. The pad is provided at the inner end thereof with an annular bead 5 which in view of its shape extends with a portion interiorly of the pad and with a portion exteriorly thereof and greatly reinforces the pad and prevents tearing of the same when it is engaged with or removed from the finger. The padjs provided with corrugations or ribs 6 on tlie exterior which extend diagonally with respect to the longitudinal axis of the pad and which encircle the body portion thereof as shown. Similar corrugations or ribs 7 are also formed exteriorly' of the pad and are disposed atan opposite angle to the ribs or corrugations 6 and form therewith a series of cells or the like 8. As shown in Fig. 1 of the draw-- ing the corrugations herein described ex tend from the tip orapex of the cap to a point in spaced relation to the annular reinforcing bead 5.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 4 the pad 9 is identical in construction with the pad 1 with the exception of the corrugations upon the exterior surface of the pad and as illustrated, in this form of my invention the corrugations extend from the apex or tip of the cap to the bead In view of the construction herein shown and described it will be apparent that the pad is free to be revolved upon the linger so as to bring unused corrugated portions of the exterior surface into position beneath the tip of the finger, and the provision of the said corrugated portions is such that the entire annular area of the pad is provided with a friction surface arranged to offer consider able resistance during manipulation of the pad.
A detail description of the operation of the device or article isthought unnecessary in View of my Patent Number 719,352, of January 27, 1903, but it will be briefly stated that the pad is engaged with the desired 'finger and in movement of the finger the pad can be brought into effective engagement with bills to be counted and its use affords means whereby the bills can be accurately counted to obviate mistakes. The pad is provided upon its interior surface with a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves 10 which together With the perforations 4 more efi'ectively afiord means for a thorough ventilation of the article.
I claim 1. A pad of the class described comprising an elastic body having a ventilating passage at its tip end, said body having ventilating passages formed in its body portion and provided upon its interior surface With a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves.
( Q. A finger pad 01" the class described comprising an elastic body having a ventilating passage at its tip end, said body having passages formed in its body portion and provided upon its interior surface with a plurality of grooves, said body having an angu-.
