DPZLEIPE "JILL? specification of Letters Eatent.
iipplication filed elctooer 16, 1908. serial l lo. 453,102.
panying drawings that form part of the same.
vcntion consists essentially in the geii'ient and construction of whereby the valve, on the release of the prewnire from therebehind, remains open of its upset position, through its angement at the lower end of the e :tor sprinkler systems in which derangement is obviated, to ie accuracy, and general e'lfioiency ion, and to clieapen the cost of pro gs, Figure l is a vertical see A valve chamber and valve.
th cover partially broken away isclosed thereby in section.
the drawings, 1 is the valve A the perpendicular circular the central ingress opening hole l through front l rear side of said chamber irdly toward the lower end of 2g here shown as secured to the riding inwardly from the en'- T. 8 is the outlet opening lIl said side wall 7. 9 is the drip open ii-oin the bottom of said side wall. A is nd hole through said sidewall close I the cover 11. It will be seen from the aim Maid description that the said valve chamber 1 is formed with the interior con- 50 verging front and rear walls 2 and respectively, the said rear Wall 5 having. the lugs 12 projecting inwardly therefrom and forming valve stops or rests.
13 is circular flange extending inwardly ts or the invention are to proand also circular in shape, said into proximity, with the front side 2 from the side. wall 7, said flange having the annular slot ll, into which is, inserted a suitable valve seat 15, said valve seat projecting slightly beyond the side face of said flange.
, 1b is the valve having the circular surface finished central portion 17 engaging the seat 1.8, the latter encircling the ingress opening 3, said valve extending from said. central portioull to the flange 13, a rubber gasket 19 being shown secured to said valve and as abutting the said seat in the closed position of the valve.
20 is an arm pivoted on the pin 21, the latter being secured at the extreme lower end of the valve chamber l and the said arm be-.
ing mounted on said pin so as to allow ali'lttle play thereon, sald arm at its upper end being secured to and supporting the valve 16.
. is a lug extending outwardly from the valve 16 toward the upper end thereof. It must bQ'UllfldlSlZOOd that the valve 16 may be any suitable shape and hinged in any suitable manner at the lower end thereof so as to fall away from the opening 3 on the re lease of the pressure from behind said valve.
L3 is a spring-held latch normally abutting the upper surface of the lug 22 and adapte to spring into position between said lug and the front side 2 on-the opening of said valve 16, thus preventing the accidental closin of the valve. This latch may be arrange in any suitable way or may beomitted, if found to be an unnecessary safetydevice.
is a gate sliding in the Vertical ways 25, the latter being secured-to the outer face of the front side 2 to each side and abutting said hand hole l. v
26 is a cylinder suitably supported from Patented Nov? so, i909 :29 is a piston rod connected with the pis- I ton 28 at one end andat the other end to the gate 24.
30 is a pipe leading from the orifice 31 un mediately to the outside of the ingress opening 3 and connected with said cylinder at said inlet opening 27.
.32 is a valve secured to the underside of the piston 28, and 33 is .a valve seat at the lower end of the cylinder 26.
3% is an outlet opening at the bottom of 45 i tems, a valve chamber converging from its i but immediately a leak occurs in any of the pipes of the sprlnkler system, tlie'said presp valve having a central finished face. engagthe cylinder 26 emptying over the drip openp sure URZQbElllIld.
in the operation of thisinvention, the 1 1e, which is of the differential type, is l to engagement with the seats 18 and 1.3 the air pressure therebehind, thepipes of I sprinkler system being pumped full of I asusual in such systems and the said air ,filllllg the valve chamber through thezi /9r outlet opening 6. The pressure of the to open saidvalve against said air pre;
re is released from the larger face of id valve, consequently the water forces the valve open, and through its own Wlgl1l,:
and the pressure of said wa'tcr,,falls over on to the incline rear side of the valve chamber if; against the said rests or stops, leaving a free passage for the water through the valve chamber and outlet 8 into the sprinkler pipes, where it is distributed as usual.
The valve chamber may be reached at any time through the large hand hole 10 and it will be noticed that the water press'urecannot remain on while the said h'and hole is open, unless the valve is manually held in its closed position.
ln'regard to the hand hole 4, this may be opened while the valve is in service, but must be closed on theopening of said valve and therefore the automatic arrangement of gate as herein shown, is the means by which said hand hole 4 is always kept in its closed position until manually opened and held open during any repairs necessary to the chamber or seats on the outerside of the valve The continuous pressure of the water on the piston in said cylinder will always retain said gate-in its lower position, even if it should fail to fall at that position by reason of its own'weight.
What 1 claim as my invention is:
1. In a dry pipe valve for sprinkler sysupper end at the outside of a vertical outlet opening to the lower end and having a perpendicular front wall and an inlet opening '--50 therefrom, said extensionbeing pivoted atthe lower end of'said chamber and said valve being adapted to fall by avity or the rush ofwater through said in ct opening to the slanting rear wall of said valve chamber and to remain in said open position and form a d fleeting surface for the rush of water ugh said inlet opening to said outlet mg and normally to be' held in its l? arily 1 closed perpendicular position by air presbottom thereof and having a perpendicular front wall and an inlet opening centrally arianged in said front wall and lugs to the inside of said perpendicular ,front' wall ex: tending downwardly from the upper wall and upwardly from the drip chamber wall, a val ve scat secured in said lugs, a valve seat secured around said inlet opening, and a hi said seat around said inlet opening, a
suitable extension surface engaging the said face for the rush of water to the outlet opening and to normally held to its closed position by air pressure. I
3. In a dry pipe valve for sprinkler sys tems, a valve chamber formed with a perpendicular front side and a sloping rear side, said sides converging toward the lower end, an outlet through the top thereof and an inlet centrally arranged in said perpendicular front, a valve seat suitably secured and surroundin said inlet opening, a valve seat 01' larger iameter than the aforesaidmat arranged within said casing in pro'ecting parts of the. top and bottom, a valve aving a central surface finished facemeeting the aforesaid inlet seat, and a resilient attachment meeting the inner seat, an arm hinged within saidcasing at the lower end thereof and secured to said valve and permitting said valve to fallftosaid sloping side on the release of air pressure from therebehind on the in-rush of the water through the inlet to the outlet, said valve deflecting said water to said outlet in the flow thereof, and auto" matic means for prevent-in the accidental closing of said valve following its release by I the lessening of the pressure of air.
l. In a dry pi valve for sprinkler systems, a valve c amber having a suite lehand hole in the ,fro nt'side thereof, water ingress and egress openings and valve seats, a valve closing said lngress openings, a gate sli dably arranged'over said hand hole at the front side, and hydraulic means for closing said' gat'c and retaining it in. its closed position.
5. In a dry pi e valve for sprinkler stems, 'a valve 0 author having a suita 1e hand hole in the front side thereof, water ingress and egress openings and valve seat-s, Signed at the city and district-0f Mona valve closing said ingress openings, a gate i treal, in the Province of Quebec, in the D0- slidably arranged over said hand hole at the lninion t Canada, this 12th day of October, front side, a cylinder suitably connected to 1908. the water supply outside of said valve, a HI'RAM GOFF BAKER, piston in said cylinder forming a valve in Witnesses: its lower position in said cylinder, and a rod G. H. TRESIDDER, extending from said piston to said gate. H. DAVIS.
