often impossible, to employ switches in the .tracks of these railways. Besides, the seven conductors are expensive in irst cost as well as in maintenance.
lThe ohjectci the present 'invention is to reduce thenumher of conductors for electrially" driven suspendedrailway cars and to employ only two current conductors with the rail tor return conductor, als(l to scparate the regulating ci the electrical currenttaliing from the regulating' of the mechanical operations. The regulating ot theeifcctrical current taking' is done loy hand by means ot'a starter fixed at any place of the line. rll`he mechanical' movements are regulated by a. magnetic current-closer in the carriage and actuated by current impulses given at the starter. Movable starters connected with the conductors by line contacts may also hc used at any point of the electrically driven suspended railway with the saine results. lat is only necessary to provide the necessz ry contacts at such places where the regulating is intended,
One ot the free conductors serves as cur!v rent conductor for the motors and the other for the circuit closing arrangement The changing of the current from the driving mot-or to the hoisting motor is effected by a cylindrical circuit closer which is revolved by means ot a ratchet and an electric magnet and which electric magnet receives its current. from the conductor for the circuit closing arrangement.
ln the accompanying drawing Figure l shows a sketch of the car and Fig. 2 shows the arrangement of the circuit closing.
Referring to the drawing, A-A indicates the suspended rail on which the car is running, l is the driving' motor of the car, C the hoisting' motor, D the circuit closer, .ll the magnet for the circuit closer, F the mag net `for the hralic,v (l the circuit cutfout, ll
thecurrent collector for the power concluetor, J the current collector tor Llie concilio tor olf the circuit closer and le' the hoisting `gear.
The wire system consists of the supply line L-li; the powcrmline lillil and the circuit closing line N lil. rlhe line lll-ll is necessary only at places o'lf loading and discharging.
Arriving' at a loading` place, the current collector d runs on to the circuit closing line and leaves the saine again on leavingm the loadingl place. The current collector l-l is always in contact with the power line lil-lill. @-0 is an insulated piece ci the power line Mwlil at the loading place. lf2-l) is correspondingpiece of the circuit. closing line N-elu Q is a starting hex with a nuinher o' resistances. 'lhe slide Contact ll is connected with the circuit closing' line lillah .lin Fig. 2 tlilc starting lion is connected with the lines by the contact S. The object ot this contact is th permit the exchange of thc resistance and. the conuection o? `the saine at ditlerent places in the case there are more than two loading places 'which are not at work at thelsariie time. The current for the two insulalrted piecesoii line CL-C2 and .ll-ll is supplied through the starting hoi: Q1 from the lsupply line L-li. l
'.llhe cylindrical circuit closer has a nunibei' of fixed contacts l to 8 which are coin nected by wires with the correspondingly named poles and the current collectors ll te L. rlhe connection of the dilerent poles is done hy revolving` cylinder whose contacts are shown developed Fig. 2.
'l2 is a ratchet wheel on the oir' the cylindrical circuit closer7 which is actuated, by pai-wl U and the magnet E. of the cylindrical circuit closer are arranged to correspond with 'the consecutive movements et' the carriage and the hoisting apparatus. f i The developed surface of cylinder shown. in Fig. 2 is an exemple oit a simple' conveyer line with two terminals at which loads are hoisted and lowered.
. Suppose loaded. is coming from 'the left hand side and arrives at terminah The consecutive movements produced, aft-er the attendant has closed and opened the circuit closer tu', once, are as iollow l, lowering olf the load and discharging of same; 2i, hoisting ci the empty hook;
the .right hand 3, depart to the left for the loading terminal; 4f, lowering of the empty hook; 5, hoisting of the attached load; 6, trip to the right forl the discharge terminal. Hereby can be assumed that one separate circuit starter Q for eachdischarging and loading' lace, is provdedrfor, onthe same circuit starteris used first at the loading place and y then at the discharging place.
Referring tothesingle-movements of circuit closing dla ram we have: The car corning from the lett tothe right, runs on to the.
piece of line O-.-O which'is without current and stops there. Now, the attendant closes theistarting box Q, the magnet receives cur rent by way of L-R-P-J and turns thecircuit closing cylinder D one notch farther, that is, from going to the right to lowering. The hoisting motor receives current in the direct-ion' of lowering and the load will be lowered. After the load has been lowered to the desired height, the attendant disengages the starting box, whereby the load is stopped under the action of brake F. After the load is unhooked, the attendant closes the starting box again, whereby magnet Ere 'ccives current. Hercby the` cylinder is turned another notch to connect for hoisting and the load will be hoisted until the automatic circuit cut out Gr cuts out the current tor the hoisting motor C.- The switch is' ranged. When the hook acts againafter disengagement of the brake, the lever 1V will tall on account of the weight W being left.
at the left and stops there on arriving at a lpiece of track O O without current. The
brought to bear upon it, and by this means the end cut-ofi' G with its contact is pressed on the fixed contact so that the current circuit for the winch motor ,is closed. lf the rope is now again wound up, the rope weight V presses in the highest position of the load hook V the lever W on the case. The end cut-ofi G is removed from the fixed contact and the current interrupted. lThe attendant then only disengages the starting box and closes it again. The cylinder is turned one notch farther and the contacts are made for the driving motor to go to the The car runs to the loading terminal circuit closings of lowering and hoisting are repeated and the car which has taken up the load before hoisting returns to the discharging place.
What I claim is:
In a circuit closing arrangement for elec trically driven suspended railway cars, the combination of acarriage provided with a carriage motor, and with hoisting gear, a main current conductor L-L, a working conductor MWM for the carriage motor with insulated sections where movements are. to be carried out, an auxiliary conductor P-P for the insulated section fed from the main conductor L-L, a magnet E in the carriage 4supplied with. current from the auxiliary conductor, a ratchet wheel and pawl `-U actuated thereby, a cylindrical circuit closer D connected therewith, and a starting box Q together with contacts for connection with said starting box placed at suitable points in the main supply line, substantially as and for the purpose descrbed.
In wit ess whereoi I have signed this specificati n in the presence of two witnesses.
