Description

Q i., wwe?. www@ o. 5238 5% W m@ LL L. soo'TT. NTERNAL COMBUSTION ROCK DRILL.
APPLIOATIGN FILED JULY 30,y 19084 LEWES L. SCTT, OF JOPLEN, MISSURI.
INTERNAL-COMBUSTQN RQCK-DRLL,
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Non. En, 19nd,.
Application tiled July 30, 190e. Serial No. 446,156.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Lewis L. Scorri, a citizen of the United Sta tes, residing at Joplin, in the county of Jasper, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful lnnn'ovenients in lnternal-Combustion RocklDrills, and do here declare the following to be a liull, clear, and exact description of the invention. such as `will enable others 4skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
'l`his invention has reference to improvementsl iu internal combustion rock-drills.
lt has been proposed, l am aware, to make use of gasolene engines for operating rock-drills, but up to the present time no actuallyv eihcient drill of that typo has been invented, and it has been found necessary to make use ot' air as the motive fluid. .lir engines, however, are extremely expen- `sive, owing to their enormous consumption of t'uel.
ln order to render a rock-drill p aelical, it is absolutely essential that au cxtreme torce. be applied al the beginning ot' each downstroke. and a. torce of equal power-at the beginning olf each rlp-stroke, the necessity for the application ot' such force in the latter instance being particularly apparent when a hole ot any considerable depth is to be drilled, since the weight of the drillaod is such that it would otherwise stick or hang in tho-hole. lt is a matter of great impor- ,ance also that the drill bc wholly incased, since the entrance of dirt and grit through the opening in which the piston pin travels into tho cylinder would shortly clog the working' parts disposed therewithin. Furthermore, it is extremely essential that the apparatus include no valves, gears, cams, or other delicate parts inasmuch as these. elements would be injured and damaged to such an extent as to render them absolutely useless a tter about tour blows of the drilll'od against flint-mok. Above all, it is of vital importance. that the drill as a whole be light enough to be carried by two men, and sutlicienlly compact to permit it to he op erated in a narrow underground tunnel or shaft.
The object of my in'v'ention` therefore, resides in the )roduction of a powerful gasolone rocledrill which shall be possessed of the requisite air and water-tight properties, and of the necessary compaetness, strength, and lightness, which shall be extremely sirnple in its construction and effective in its operation, which shall be completely inclosed, and which shall include no delicate pa rts such as valves, gears, or the like, which are liable to beeonu injured by such jarring as is not. absorbed by the cushioning devices. With these ends in View, l employ a double opposed motor and a drill. rod swiveled to the piston, and l locate all of the rotating mechanism inside of the stutlingbox, so as to preclude any posible loss of compression due to the escape of the gases, thus insuring ignition at every stroke.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which corresponding parts or tea.- tures are designated by the same reference characters throughout both views.
(lf the said drawings, Figure l is a plan View. partly in section, ot' the improved drill. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sec-- tion therethrough.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the engine is shown as including upper and lower cylindersl and 2 connected by a head 3, the first-mentioned cylinder being formed integral with the base plate Il, to which latter the other cylinder is fastened by any suitable means. The upper cylinder has its interior divided into an explosion chamber' (i and a mixing chamber 7. rlhe chamber 6 is closed by the adjacent wall or the head 3, and the chamber 7 by the crank case 8, said ease receiving the journals 9 of the crank shaftv which latter includes the cank arms l() which are connected by the pin 11. This pin is connected through the rod 12 With the upper head 13 of the doubleact'ing piston which reciproeates in the eylinders. The stein lll which joins the upper head 123' to the lower head lo has its axial bore divided by a central `partition 16 into upper and lower sections l? and 18 which communicate with the corresponding piston heads. ,TheI upper section lT communicates at times with the explosion chamber tv through. the series of passages 19, said pasH sages being located adjacent the partition 1G, while the section 1S communicates through a series of similarly located passages 2O with the explosion chamber 2l of the cylinder Hence the passages 19 form a means of communication between the chambers ff and 7, and the passages 20 in like mann-sb form a communication between the above mentioned explosion chamber "/l and the mbo? if said springs bowing sumb'io loaf spin to the formolon povilom o?? mo against the @Wilo sofo stom formed i pofno of *rho sp'ua grooves, rm to #no provlsmn cwcumoombmg @zo eool'vo of the pins winch project ymio the same, it
