UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
HARVEY E. GREGG, OF NEWPORT, DELAWARE.
FLEXIBLE CRUSHING-MIACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, T'IARVEY E. GREGG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Newcastle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flexible Urushing-Vlachines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in grinding or crushing machines of that class having yieldable grinding elements, whereby foreign substances that are harder in structure that the substance or material being operated upon, may pass out of the machine without being crushed.
One object of the invention is to provide a machine or mill of this character having an improved grinding member or bur composed of yieldably mounted sections which swing laterally toward and from the co-acting grinding member or bur.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for preventing dust from reaching the bearing of the shaft of the rotary grinding member or bur.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical section through my improved grinding or crushing machine; and Fi 2 is a top plan view, partly in horizontal section and with parts removed.
In the drawings A denotes a hollow main frame arranged on a base plate I) and provided with a vertical opening L through which the material to be crushed passes and which contains the co-acting inner and outer grinding members or burs. The inner grinding member is preferably in the form of an externally corrugated cone B fixed to a vertical shaft V having its lower end journaled in a step bearing U supported by spider arms in the lower cylindrical tubular portion of the main frame A. The upper end of the shaft is journaled in a suitable bearing in a tripod frame or spider F arranged upon and secured to the top of the frame A. The frame F is also provided with a bearing for a horizontal drive shaft S containing a pulley P for a driving belt and also supported in a bearing on a stand- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 25, 1909.

Serial No. 474,131.
I ard T which rises from the base plate D.
The beveled gearing G causes the rotary motion of the shaft S to be imparted to the shaft V.
The outer grinding member is in the form of a flexible cone-shaped casing arranged in the upper portion of the main frame A and surrounding the cone or bur B, and composed of an annular series of segmental cheek pieces 0 mounted for lateral movement toward and from the cone B. Said cheek pieces 0 are preferably hung for swinging movement by ball and socket hinge connections, each of which consists of a ball-like or spherical projection C formed on the center of the outer face of the cheek piece and seated in a substantially semispherical-shaped socket E formed at the upper edge of the vertical opening in the main frame A, as clearly shown in the drawin This hinged mounting for the cheek pieces permits their lower portions to swing toward and from the cone or bur B, their inward swinging movement being limited by stop fingers or projections N formed on the lower ends of the cheek pieces and adapted to engage a portion of the main frame A, as shown in Fig. 1.
Coil springs I arranged within the main frame A in back of the cheek pieces actuate the latter inwardly to yieldably support them in an operative position and, in order to permit the tension of said springs to be regulated to adapt the machine for operation upon different kinds of materials, set screws J are arranged in threaded openings in the main frame A, as shown. Said set screws are adapted to be locked in an adjusted position by means of lock nuts K. The inner faces of the cheek pieces 0 may be smooth, corrugated, or of other form according to the use for which the machine is designed and their side edges are preferably beveled so as to overlap, as shown at Q in Fig. 2.
H denotes a bell-shaped hopper suitably secured to the top of the main frame A within the spider or tripod frame F and adapted to direct material into the outer cone-shaped grinding member formed by the cheek pieces 0.
For the purpose of effectively preventing dust .of the material being crushed by the machine, from entering the step bearing U, the lower end of the cone B is formed with a depending annular flange W which surrounds the upper end of said step bearing. Within the flange is formed a plurality of inwardly and radially projecting ribs R which form blades or vanes to create a current of air atthe top of the bearing U for the purpose of directing the dust away from the latter. This annular series of ribs or vanes R are so disposed in the flange or ring W that when the shaft V is rapidly rotated they will create a current of air which will effectively keep the dust out of the step bear M denotes an open metal cylinder which forms a surrounding casing for the body A and by means of which the latter is secured upon the base plate D.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described in detail, it will be understood that various changes in the form, proportion and arrangement of parts and the details of constrnetion may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
In a crushing machine, the combination of a hollow cylindrical body, a shaft arranged vertically therein a step bearing for the lower end of the shaft and arranged in said body said step bearing having a cylindrical upper end, an annular series of Segmental cheek pieces mounted for swinging movement in the body above said bearing, a cone-shaped crushing member to co-act with said cheek pieces fixed to the shaft above said step bearing, an annular flange formed integral with the bottom of said cone-shaped crushing member and depending therefrom to receive the cylindrical upper end of the step bearing, said depending flange being formed upon its inner wall with inwardly projecting radial ribs to provide vanes which create a current of air when the shaft is rotated and direct dust away from the upper end of the step bearing, and means for rotating said shaft.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
