Letters Patent No. 94,151, dated August 24, 1869.`
IMPRovEp REPRIGERATOR 'The Schedule referreu to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe lame.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ons G. VANPELT, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Refrigerator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionrreference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification.
My invention is designed to more eec'tually guard against changes of temperature in a refrigerator; and
My invention consists primarily in the provision of a chamber in communication with the Vinterior at its upper' part, and provided with athermometer, whereby to observe the temperature of the interior, a win dow in front Vside of said thermometer enabling inspection of it atfany moment without opening the refrigerator.
The preserving-room or closet of the refrigerator has preferably its walls, oor, and ceiling made double, so as to form a reigerating-jac-ket, which is provided at its top with funnels, for the yintroduction of the refrigerant, and at its bottom with a waste or dischargep1 pe. f,
' Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a refrigerator embodying my improvements.
Figure 2is a vertical longitudinal section of the thermometer-chamher on a larger scale.
A and B representfrespectively, the inner and outer shells of my refrigerating-room, chest, or closet, enclosing between them a space or jacket, a, for the-refrigerant.
C are funnels, through which refrigerant is fed to the jacket a; and
c, their covers. l
. D is a discharge-pipe for the spent or n1elted,re frigerant.
Extending upward from the interior of the refrigerating-room, and communicating with it, is an upper chamber, E, Ato contain a thermometer, F, by whicll the temperature of the room can be observed without opening the door, panes of glass G G' being provided for that purpose.
H represents a door, by which access is had to the ro'onl.
I represents an external wall or enclosure of masonry or lumber.
J isan insulating-jacket to be packed with Icharcoal, or other suitablev insulating-material.
-I claim vherein as new, and of my invention- 1. The upper chamber E, communicating with the interior room or closet b, and having a. thermometer, lfh, and double window G G', as and for the purpose set orth.
2. The'refrigerator herein represented and described, having the walls of its preserving-room b composed ot' metallic shells A B, forming a re'geratngjacket-a, having tunnels C for the introduction of the cooling medium thereto, and a discharge-pipe, D, and provided with an upper chamber, E, communicating with the room or closet b, and enclosing a thermometer, F, as set forth, for the purposes shown.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
J. C. VANPELT.
