ISAC O. GARLSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOOD-VENDING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1909.
Application filed March 3, 1909. Serial No. 481,171.
Be it known that I, ISAC OJCARLSON, a citizen of the United- 'States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illi- IlOlS, have invented a certain new and useful Food-Vending Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices commonly known as dumb waiters, designed for the vending of eatables or articles of food without the assistance of waiters or other like personages.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned ada ted support in such a manner that all the food articles contained therein will be clearly visible by the purchaser from without.
A further object is to provide a device as mentioned which, upon the deposition of a coin therein may be opened so as to permit of the removal therefrom of a portion of the food articles contained therein..
Another object is to provide a ..device which will be efficient and one which will be comparatively simple of construction, hence of low cost to manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in View .my invention consists generally in a cylindrically formed body or container rotatably mounted in an inclosing casing, said container being divided by a plurality of radial partitions into a plurality of radial sector formed compartments in which, when the device is arranged for use, are adapted to be contained the articles of food to be vended.
My invention further consists in a door adapted normally to close the opening in the device through which the food articles are dispensed, and further in means for normally locking said door in closed position, said means being adapted, upon the deposition of a coin to release said' door permitting of the opening thereof, and hence of the removal of the food article contained in the compartment registering with said openscribed and particularly pointed out in the claims. v
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan View of the preferred form of embodiment of my invention, Fig. 2 is a central vertical section taken on tially sectional and partially elevational, of the mechanism embodied in my invention for closing the dispensing opening of the device, Fig. 4 is a horizontal section thereof taken on the line y y of Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is a right side elevation of said mechanism, a portion of the casing thereof. being broken away so as to better illustrate its construction, Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line a z of Fig. 5, Fig. 7 is a detail front elevation of the admission door of the device, Fig. 8 is a sectional detail of one of the compartment formin partitions of the device, Fig. 9 is a sectional detail taken on the line u-u of Fig. 2, Figs. 10
I and 11 are ldetail top plan views of supporting means embodied in the device, and Figs. 12 and 13 are front and side elevations respectively of one of the rollers and its supmember 2, the same being secured thereto preferably by means of rivets 3, is a reinforcing cross formed member 4. Centrally positioned upon ,said member 4, the same being secured thereto preferably by means of rivets 5, is a bracket 6 centrally secured upon the upper surface of which is a disk 7 in the upper surface of which 1s formed a circular ball race 8 in which are provlded balls 9. Rotatably mounted upon sa1d balls is a cylindrical container comprising a vertically disposed axis 10 the lower cyllndrically formed end portion 11 of WhlCl'l 1s centrally journaled in the disk 7 and bracket 6, the'upper extremity thereof being ouraled in a bracket 12 the end. portions of which are secured as by screws 13 to the base the line as w of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a detail, par- 1. The vertically disposed legs 14 of said bracket 12 preferably rest in engagement with the outer surface of the member 2 there by serving as a means of support of the latter. Carried by said axis, the same being fixed one to either end portion thereof, are similar upper and lower disks l5 and 16 respectively, the latter thereof resting on the balls 9. Extending between said disks, the extremities thereof being secured, preferably soldered thereto, is a concentrically arranged tubular member 17.
Having their inner edge portions secured, preferably soldered, to the outer edge portions of the inner surfaces of the disks 15 and 16 and to the end port-ions of the outer surface of the member 17 are horizontally disposed upper and lower disks 18 and 19 of a diameter slightly less thanthe inside diameter of the member 2. The upper one of said disks 18 is provided with a plurality radially disposed similar sector formed openings 20 equally spaced apart therein. Arranged beneath said openings, the same being suitably secured to the under surface of the disk 18, but preferably by means of angular channel forming metallic strips 21 engaging the lateral edges thereof and of the portions 22 of said disk, as clearly shown in Fig. 8, are transparent preferably glass plates 23, the same being further locked against longitudinal movement by means of shorter angular strips 24 engaging the outer edges thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Dividing the space between the disks 18 and 19 into similar sector formed compartments 25 in which are adapted to be contained the food articles to be vended, are radial Vertically disposed partitions 26 the upper offset edge portions 27 thereof being centrally secured, preferably by soldering, to the portions 22 of thedisk 18, the lower offset edge portion's27 thereof being similarly secured to the upper surfaceof the disk 19, as clearly shown in Fig. 8. Arranged upon either side of said partitions,
:the upper edge portions thereof being secured thereto by means of the strips 21 which rest in engagement with the outer surface thereof, the lower edge portions thereof being locked in position by means of angle strips 28, are preferably plate glass mirrors 29.
Equally spaced apart upon, and adjustably secured to the under surface of the disk 19, preferably by means of screws 30 threaded into said disk the same extending through elongated slots 31 provided therein, are brackets 32 in the forward end portions of which are rotatably mounted rollers 33, the
latter being so positioned as to be adapted to travel upon the inside surface of the vertical wall of the casing 2 upon the rotation of the container. In order to readily effect "such rotation of the container the upper surface of the disk 18 is preferably provided with a plurality of knobs or handpieces 34.
Provided in the rearward side of the casing 2 is an opening 35 adapted to register with the mouths of the compartments 25, such opening being adapted to serve as an admission passage to said compartments through which the food articles to be contained in the latter may be supplied. A door 36 hung up'on hinges 37 provided upon said casing is normally held by means of a coil spring in a position closing said admlsslon opening.
Provided in the front side of the casing 2 is an opening 39 adapted to normally close which is a door 40 mounted on hinges 41 provided close to the lower edge thereof. A leaf spring 42, the oifset free end portion 43 of which is adapted to engage the lower edge of said door, is adapted to yieldingly hold the latter in closed position, the upper edge of said door being, when the latter is in closed position, in engagement with a stop 44 in the form of a depending metallic strip provided upon the inner surface of the casing 2, as shown in Fig. 4. Arranged upon the base 1 directly forward of the door 40 is a substantially rectangularly formed casing or housing 45 in which is inclosed a mechanism through the medium of which the door 40 may be opened. 45 indicates the removable cover of said casing. Recipro cally mounted in said casing in a tubular elongated bearing. forming portion 46 formed therein is a plunger 47 normally held in outermost or initial position therein by means of a coil spring provided in the tubular portion 46, the respective extremities thereof being in engagement with the rearward end wall of the latter and a shoulder provided upon said plunger. Formed upon and projecting from the lower edge of the door 40, below the line of the hinged connection thereof, the same being in axial alinement with said plunger 47 is a preferably cylindrical pro ectiOn 49 the forward extremity thereof being adapted to be engaged by the adjacent extremity of sald plunger. By such construction, upon the depression of said plunger, the latter Wlll engage said projection 49 cansln the depression thereof and thereby obviously effecting the opening of the door 40, the lower edge of the latter being forced from engagement with the above mentioned locking spring 42, said door in which event assuming a position as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 5.
Rockingly mounted upon a shaft 50 supported at its extremities in brackets 51 secured upon and upwardly extending from the bottom of the casing 45 is an angularly formed lever 52, the outer extremity of the arm 53 of which projects through a slot 54 provided in a vertically extending coin chute is adapted normally to rest upon posts 57 formed upon and upwardly extending from the bottom of the casing 45, said end portion being adapted when in such position to traverse the path of the plunger 47, thereby preventing the latter contacting the projection 49 and hence evidently preventing the openin of the door 40. An angular arm 58 pro ecting from the arm 56 is adapted normally to engage a hook member 59 provided at the lower edge of the door there by acting as an additional means of locking said door in closed position.
60 indicates a Weight which serves an obvious purpose.
By such construction it is obvious that the plunger 47 may be actuated, that is the door 40 opened, only upon the elevation of the arm 56, or in other words upon the depression of the arm 53. Such depression of saidarm 53 is effected, when the device is arranged for use, by the deposition of a coin in the chute 55, such coin, as clearly shown, in Fig. 3, contacting the extremity of the arm 53 causing the downward rocking thereof.
In order to prevent the coin from dropping entirely through the chute and thereby releasing the arm 53 before the actuation of the plunger 47, I provide a laterally projecting arm 61 secured at one of its extremities to said plunger, the opposite end portions 62 thereof normally extending through the lower extremity of the slot 54 provided in the chute 55, the same traversing the passage through the latter. vision, upon the deposition of a coin in the chute, the same Wlll pass down the same causing the depression of the arm 53, but will be retarded by the arm end portion 62, the coin being held in such position, and hence the arm 53 in a depressed position, until the plunger is depressed whereupon the coin will be permitted to drop through the chute to a coin receptacle 63 provided for the reception of the latter, the lever 52 upon being released returning to normal or initial position. However, before actuating the door opening mechanism of the device the operator must rotate the container to,
such a position that one of the compartments 25 of t e latter will register with the opening 39.. The container being in any other position than that stated, the rollers 33 will be in a position such as "to prevent the inward movement of the lower portion of the door 40, hence prevent the opening of the latter.
In order to efiect the closing of the door 40' so as to prevent the communication with more than one compartment 25 for one coin deposited, I form the lower corner portions 64 of said door outwardly disposed, as
By such pro-' shown in Figs. 3 and 5. Now, upon the rotation of the container, the door beinggpen, the rollers 33 will abut said portions 64 orcing the same outward and thereby evidently causing the closin of said door.
While I have sown what I deem to be the preferable form of my device, I do not wish to be limited thereto, as there might be many changes made in thedetails of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention. And although I have designed my device particularly for the yending of food articles or eatables, I may use the same in any other connection to which it is applicable.
Having described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: -1. In a device of the class described, a cylindrical casing having a dispensing opening therein and a closure for said opening,
in combination with a rotary container mounted in said ca'sing, said container being formed into a plurality of compartments adapted to register one at a time with said opening, means on said container for maintaining said closure in closed'position except wheneither of said compartments is in register with said opening and also adapted to close the same when said container is rotated, substantially as described.
