Description
iinrrnn sfr-Aras PATENT OFFICE. l
HENRY SHERMAN LOUD, Oli' NEW YORK, N. Y., AND, JOSEPH PANTER, OF STRETFORD,
MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, ASSIGNORS TO A' CORPORATION VOft? PENNSYLVANIA.
V '.lI-Illil WESTINGHOUSE MACHINE COMPANY,
'romaine-BLADE. i
senses.
.To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY SHERMAN LOUD and JOSEPH PANTER, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of New York, State of New York, United States of America,- and Stretford, Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have made a new and useful Invention in Turbine Blades and Vanes, of which the following is a specication.
rThis invention relates to elastic fluid turbines and more blades and vanes.
An object of this invention is the production of effective means for mounting blades to the 'rotor and the vanes to the stator element of the turbine.
The rotary Working elements of a turbine which receive the working iiuid are ordinai-ily termed buckets, or blades and the stationary directing elements are termed Valles.
.stator element, and for that reason, and
also for the sake of brevity, we will hereinafternse the terni blade in a broad sense so that it will include both the rotating blades and the stationary vanes.
In the drawings accompanyingthis application and forming a part thereof; Figure l is a partial elevation of a portion of a blade shown] in connection with a partial sectional elevation View of the mounting element. The blade is shown in thc position it occupies justprior to being secured to the holding element; Fig. 2A is a similar view showing the positions of the parts after the blade has been secured to the sup orting member; Fig. 3 is a side elevation o blades after they are mounted in accordance with the method illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2; Figs. 4: and 5 are views Similar to Figs. l and 2 illustrating a modifcationbf our invention; Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9, are views similar to Figs. l and 2 and illustrate a still further modification of our invention,
In Figs. l, 2 and Y3 a method of mounting' holes into which. the swaged ends of the' blades are forced and in which they are separticularly to turbine cured by being distorted. Each blade 20 is provided with a 'swaged end or shank 2l,
which is adapted to more or less snugly ft` into a substantially cylindrical hole 22 formed-in the blade mounting element 23.
l Specification of Letters Batent. Patented Nov, 30, 1909, l
Application filed April 20,"1907. Serial No. 369,283.
Each hole 22 terminates at its inner end in .an enlarged recess 24 in which a spherical .inner end of the swaged portion of the blade before the blade reaches its filial position. By forcing the blade into place the ball 25 displaces the metal o-f the inner end of the shank 2l, thereby causing the shank to be distorted or expanded to fill, or partially fill, the recess 24, the distortion of the shank causing it to grip the Walls of the hole 22. With such an arrangementthe blades can be mounted on the mounting element 23 at any desired angle, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby overcoming the necessity of gaging after the blades are in place.
Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate a modification of our invention in which the expansion piece is formed integrally with the blade holding element and in which the swaged ends of the blades are notched, thereby forming an initial opening into which the expansion piece is forced during the operation of mounting the blades. In this modification each blade 2O is provided with a swaged end 26, which is preferably ofsuch shape as to form a spacing piece between adjacent' blades.l The mounting element 28 is provided with an undercut slot 27 into which the .blades are inserted for the urpose of mounting them to the element. leach slot 27 is provided with a ridge 28, which is formed integrally with the mounting element on the inner face of the slot. The
ls'afaged end 26 of each blade is provided 4slot by straddling the ridge 28. rIhe width of the swaged end of theLblad/e before it is mounted in the groove 27v is equal to' the narrowest portion of the groove. In Flg. 5
the blade is shown yin place, the bifurcatcd In forcing the blades to place in.
Which, to all purposes, is the same as the4 expansion piece 28 shown in Figs. 4 and 5 except that it does not ldistort the swaged end of the blades to the same extent.
The operation of mounting the blades is the same as that described in connection With Figs. a' and 5; that is, the swaged end of each blade is inserted into the undercut slot 27 and forced to the bottom of the groove, thereby beingsecured in place by the expansion or distortionv of the swaged portion over the expansion piece 28.
In Figs. v8 and 9 a modification is shown in which the expansion pieces are formed separately and inserted into the undercut 'slots Each blade 20 is provided with the sWaged portion 26, Which is provided with the slot 29. An expansion piece 3l, which is Wedge shaped in cross section, is located upon the inner face of the under cut slot 26, Which is formed in the 'mounting portion 23. The Wedge shaped piece 3l is so located that its aXis is parallel to the axis of the slot 27. In driving eachblade- 2O home into the slot 27, the slotted portion of. the blade is caused to straddle the Wedge 31 and is distorted by it so as`to gri the undercut Walls of the slot 27 by being orced into gripping contact With them. A
What we claim is:
l. In an elastic Huid turbine, a blade holding element, a hole provided in said element, blades provided with slotted mounting portions and'rr'neans, located Within said hole, for distorting the mounting portion of said blade to grip the Walls of said hole, whereby the'blades are secured to saidholding element. y l
2. In combination in an elastic fluid turbine, a blade holding element, a hole pro vided in said element, blad'es provided with slotted mounting portions and means, located Within said hole and cooperating with said slotted portion, to secure said blade lto said element.
In testimony whereof, We have hereunto subscribed our names these 27th and 17th days of March and Aprii, 1907.
