JOSEPH HIGGINSON, JR., AND HUBERT ARUNDEL, OF STOCKPORT, ENGLAND.
YARN OB THREAD WINDING,
DOUBLING, GASSING, AND LIKE MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH HIGGINSON, Jr., and HUBERT ARUNDEL, both of Sov ereign Works, Stockport, in the county of Chester, England, textile machinists, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments Relating to Yarn or Thread Winding, Doubling, Gassing, and Like hIachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to yarn or thread winding, doubling, gassing and like ma chines and has for its object to provide simple and eflicient means for readily inserting the yarn or thread into the guiding slits or apertures of the split or like friction drums which rotate the cheeses or flangeless bobbins being wound.
Our invention comprises the employment of a guide rod or its equivalent capable of itself entering the slit in the split friction drum and of guiding the yarn into the slit, said rod being removed, or automatically releasing itself, from said slit after the yarn has entered the latter, as hereinafter de scribed.
Referring to the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings :F igure 1 shows in end elevation and Fig. 2 in plan, with certain parts omitted, one convenient application of our invention. Fig. 3 illustrates a further application of our invention.
The same reference letters in the different views indicate the same or similar parts.
In the application of our invention, as illustrated at Figs. 1 and 2, we pivotally mount upon the ordinary stop lever a of a gassing or like-machine, a bracket 6 carrying at one end a clamping or binding screw or similar device as c for firmly holding in place a spring rod or like part (Z having a turned down end 6. Such end 0, when the rod is in its inoperative position, as shown in full lines, rests over the split friction drum f at a point about midway between the ends of the latter.
IVhen the handle end a of the stop lever a is in the position shown in dotted lines the extreme end of the turned down portion (2 of the spring rod 63' is within the slit in the split drum f, but the cheese or bobbin 2' being wound is not rotating, for the support or plate a removes it from contact with the split drum by which it is rotated. As, however, the handle end a is gradually depressed, said cheese or bobbin is allowed to come into contact with the drum f, but when Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed February 28, 1908.
Patented Nov. 23, 1909. Serial No. 418,372.
such contact is effected, the extreme end of e is still within the slit h as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l and is being moved thereby from side to side of the machine. During such movements, the spring rod engages the yarn or thread resting upon the surface of the drum and causes it to enter the guiding slit h. A further lowering movement imparted to the stop lever handle brings one end j of the bracket 6, carrying the aforesaid spring guide rod (Z against an adjustable stop 7 which forces the bracket Z) to turn about its pivot and raise the end of the spring rod (Z from engagement with the slit it in the split drum f. A stop 0 limits the downward movement of the rod (Z.
Instead of employing a spring rod or like part as before described, we may employ a guide rod (Z so mounted as to be capable of an oscillating movement under the action of the guiding slit in the split friction drum as shown in Fig. 3, where the end of the guide rod passes around a groove in the roller support m. The guide rod (Z may if desired in any case be brought into operation by depressing its end by hand, the rod springing back to its inoperative position when released.
We do not limit ourselves to any particular form of guide rod, nor to any particular method of mounting and operating same, but make such modifications as may be necessary to meet any particular requirements.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In yarn or thread winding, doubling, gassing and like machines, the combination with adrum having a yarn guiding slit therein of a guide rod supported externally to the said drum and capable of entering said slit and of guiding the yarn thereinto during the rotation of the drum, substantially as set forth.
2. In yarn or thread winding, doubling, gassing and like machines, in combination, a drum having a yarn guiding slit therein, a guide rod, a pivotally mounted bracket carrying said rod and means whereby the rod is caused to enter and leave the aforesaid slit for the insertion of the yarn in the latter, substantially as set forth.
3. In yarn or thread winding, doubling, gassing and like machines, in combination, a drum having a yarn guiding slit therein, a cheese driven by said drum, a guide'rod,
a pivotally mounted bracket carrying said rod, and means causing said guide rod to project into said slit for the insertion of the yarn therein and to leave said slit after the cheese has been brought into contact with said drum, substantially as set forth.
4. In yarn or thread Winding, doubling, gassing and like machines, in combination, a drum having a yarn guiding slit therein, a cheese driven by said drum, a guide rod, a pivotally mounted bracket carrying said rod, a stop for engagement by said bracket and means for causing said guide rod to enter said slit in the split drum for the insertion of the yarn in the slit, and then to leave the slit, substantially as set forth.
5. In yarn or thread Winding, doubling, gassing and like machines, in combination, a drum having a yarn guiding slit therein, a cheese driven by said drum, a spring guide rod, a pivotally mounted bracket carrying said rod, an adjustable stop for engagement by said bracket, and means for causing said guide rod to enter said slit in the split drum for the insertion of the yarn in the slit, and then to leave the slit, substantially as set forth.
6. In yarn or thread Winding, doubling, gassing and like machines, in combination, a drum having a yarn guiding slit therein, a cheese driven by said drum, a spring guide rod capable of entering said slit, a pivotally mounted bracket carrying said guide rod, an adjustable stop for engagement by said bracket, a stop lever carrying said bracket and also means for removing the cheese from contact with said split drum, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof, We affix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH HIGGINSON, JR. I-IUBERT ARUNDEL.
