T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH MonEAU, of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Vegetable-Cutter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction and operation of vegetable cutters.
To that end a rotary vegetable cutter is provided that is movable longitudinally of its axis, preferably by the same means that rotates the cutter and gradually, as the vegetable is being out or sliced. In combination with the rotary cutter there is a non-rotary partition extending diametrically thereof and in a plane with the axis of the cutter that is also movable along with the cutter as it is fed.
The invention also includes a plate preferably horizontal, secured stationary for holding the Vegetable, or against which the vegetable is pressed by the revolving cutter, as the cutting process progresses.
Another feature of the invention consists in providing hoppers adjacent to or alter nating with said stationary vegetable holding plate into which the vegetables may be placed for feeding them to the cutter. Preferably there are two oppositely arranged vegetable holding plates, each covering onefourth of the cutter and between them there are hoppers.
Another feature of the invention consists in the means for elevating or feeding the cutter and partition plate. This consists of a cam plate engaging the lower end of the shaft carrying the cutter so as to elevate the same gradually, and means driven by said shaft for actuating said cam plate.
The various features of my invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of the device, wit-h the legs centrally broken away, and some parts shown by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the device on a plane cutting the driving shaft along its axis. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 38 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a vertical, section on the line t1 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a vertical section 011 the line 55 of Fig. 3, showing some vegetables in process of being sliced.
The machine herein shown to illustrate the general nature of this invention is adapted particularly for slicing cabbages for sauer kraut, although it may be used for slicing other vegetables. There is a cylindrical stationary casing supported upon four legs 11. Said casing 10 is open both at the top and the bottom. A horizontally disposed rotary knife 12 operates within said casing 10 and although it is vertically movable during its operation, it constitutes the bottom of the casing and upon which the vegetables 13 are deposited while being cut, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. This cutter has four slots 14 in it that are almost radial and knives 15 overlapping said slots, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. When the plate 12 is revolved these knives will cut slices from the under side of the vegetables, provided the vegetables are held from rotary and vertical movement, and the sliced portion will pass downward by gravity through the slots 14: into any suitable receptacle. The cutter 12 is revolved by the shaft vertically disposed and mounted at its upper end in the bearing bracket 21, where it is provided with a bevel pinion 22 meshing with the vertically disposed bevel gear 23 secured on a horizontal driving shaft 24 that is driven by the pulley 25. Said driving shaft is mounted in two boxes 26 secured upon a frame composed of horizontal portions 27 and vertical portions 28 extending upwardly from the upper rim of the cylindrical casing 10, see Fig. 1.
The vegetables are held from revolving with the cutter by reason of the non-rotary partition plates 30. In the form herein shown these plates are radially disposed and united at the center of the device to form a sleeve 81 which surrounds the shaft 20 and at its lower end rests upon the hub of the cutter 12, see Fig. 2, so the partition plates 30 and sleeve 31 may be formed in one piece, as seen in Fig. 3, and their outer ends project loosely into vertical slots 32 in the casing 10. The construction is such that the partition plates will move upwardly with the cutter 12.
To prevent vertical escape or displacement of the vegetables a pair of vegetable holding plates 35 are secured upon the casing 10. These are quadrant-shaped plates, see Fig. 3, horizontal in position and preferably two of them are oppositely located and cover each about one-half of the rotary cutter. As the cutting process proceeds the rotary cutter is forced upwardly against the vegetables and they are held from escape upwardly by the plate 35, as seen in Fig. 5.
Since the vegetable holding plates cover two opposite quadrants of the rotary cutter, there are two oppositely located openings, quadrant-shaped, between said plates, which openings are surrounded by upwardly extending hoppers into which the vegetables are thrown and from which they feed by gravity down to the rotary cutter.
The vertical movements of the rotary cutter are controlled by the following mechanism. A pair of frame plates depend from the cylindrical casing 10 and about 'midway thereunder, one on each slde of the lower part of the shaft 20. In the lower part of said frame plates there is a shaft 41 mounted and a cam plate 42 secured on it, under the lower end of the shaft in posi tion to push said shaft upwardly as the cam plate is revolved. The cam plate is driven by the spur gear 43 on the shaft 41 that meshes with the gear 44 which in turn engages the gear 45 on the shaft 46, to which a worm wheel 47 is secured. These parts are mounted in the frame plates 40. The worm wheel engages a worm 48 that is splined upon the shaft 20 and is held from vertical movement by the plate 49 which is secured to the plates 40.
As the machine is operated the shaft re- Volves the cutters and at the same time rotates the worm 4S and that, through intermediate mechanism, revolves the cam plate 42 and as it revolves it forces the shaft 20, the rotary cutter 12 and the partition plates 13 upwardly gradually and gives to them the feeding movement. This upward movement of the rotary cutter continues until it substantially reaches the vegetable hold ing plates and has fully sliced the vegetable. Then the cam plate 42 permits said parts to descend by gravity until they reach the lower part of the cylindrical casing 10, whereupon the operation is repeated. As the rotary cutter 12 descends in the movement described, the vegetables in the hoppers descend with it and then as the cutter revolves the vegetables will be carried under the holding plates to a position against the partition plates 30 and, therefore, the vegetables will be held stationary by the mechanism just described until they are sliced entirely by the gradual upward movement of the cutter 12.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A vegetable cutter including a cylindrical casing, a rotary cutter mounted conceiitrically therein, a stationary vegetable holding plate in a plane parallel with said.
rotary cutter, means for feeding said rotary cutter as the cutting operation proceeds, and a partition plate extending radially of said rotary cutterand movable therewith as said cutter is given its feeding movement and with its edge near said rotary cutter and with the side thereof adjacent said vegetable holding plate.

cally disposed shaft mounted concentrically therein and longitudinally movable, a horizontally disposed cutting disk mounted on said shaft in said casing so as to serve as a bottom for said casing upon which vegetables may be placed to be cut, a partition plate mounted on said shaft above said rotary disk so as to be non-rotary but vertically movable with said shaft, vegetable holding plates held stationary and parallel with said cutting disk and diagonally opposite each other adjacent said partition plate, and means for giving said shaft a gradual vertical movement as the cutting operation proceeds.
8. A vegetable cutter including a cylin drical casing, a rotary cutter mounted concentrically therein, a non-rotative partition plate above said rotary cutter, and vertically movable therewith, a stationary vegetable iolding plate over a portion of said rotary cutter, a hopper above and with its lower end opening over another portion of said rotary plate and means for giving the cutter a vertical feeding movement.
4. A vegetable cutter including a cylindrical casing, a vertically disposed rotary cutter mounted concentrically therein, a non-rotative partition plate above said rotary cutter and vertically movable therewith, which extends diametrically of the cylindrical casing to form a chamber on either side thereof, oppositely arranged vegetable holding plates on said casing, each covering about one-fourth of the rotary cut ter, oppositely located hoppers mounted on said casing between said vegetable holding plates, and means for giving the cutter a vertical feeding movement substantially as set forth.
5. A vegetable cutter including a cylindrical casing, a vertically movable shaft mounted concentrically within said casing, means for driving the shaft, a horizontal cutter secured on said shaft that is vertically movable therewith, a non-rotative partition plate in the casing over the cutter that is vertically movable with the cutter, and means driven by said shaft'for vertically moving it as it is operated.
6. A vegetable cutter including a cylindrical casing, a vertically movable shaft mounted concentrically within said casing, means for driving the shaft, a horizontal cutter secured on said shaft that is vertically movable therewith, a nonrotative partition plate in the casing over the cutter that is vertically movable with the cutter, a cam plate engaging the lower part of said shaft for vertically moving it while being operated, and means driven by the shaft for revolving the cam plate.
7. A vegetable cutter including a cylindrioal casing, a vertically movable shaft mounted concentrically within said casing, means for driving the shaft, a horizontal cutter secured on said shaft that is vertically movable therewith, a non-rotative partition plate in the casing over the cutter that is vertically movable with the cutter, a cam plate engaging the lower part of said shaft for vertically moving it while being operated, frame plates extending downwardly from said casing, a cam plate mounted in said frame so as to bear against the lower end of said shaft to elevate it, a worm splined on said shaft and held from vertical movement, a worm gear meshing therewith, and a gear between said worm gear and cam plate for actuating the latter, substantially as set forth.
