UNITE PATENT @FFlGE.
EIVIIL H. MILNEB, 0F STOCKBRIDGE, MICHIGAN.
CHAIR.
9TH. too
To all whom it may concern.
Be itknown that I, EMU. II. Minxicu, a citizen of the l nited States. residing at tockbridge, county of Ingham, State of Michigan have invented a certain new and useful Iniprovement in Chairs. and declare the following to be a full. clear. and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art t which it. pertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings. whi h form a part; of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in chairs and has for its object means whereby the seat and bark may be adjusted with reference to each oth r to meetthe require ments of the party occupying it.
A further object is the construction of the seat portion whereby it will automatically adapt itself to the' angle at which the bark may be set.
Another feature of the iinention is the means employed for securing the back at any desired angle.
Other improvements will hereafter appear.
In the drawings accompanying this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chair with the cushions removed to disclose the construction of the parts. Fig. 2 is a. detail perspective view with parts broken away and in section. showing more .)articularly-the means employed to adjust and lock the back of the chair.
Referring); now to the letters of reference spread upon the drawingsz-A indicates the fame of the chair in which the seat and back are mounted.
B is the back formed of two side members B connected together by cross bars B (1 denote trunnions projecting 'from the members B and mounted in suitable bearings secured to the frame- A by means of which the back may be tilted at an angle. to the frame A. 1
I) is :1 depending plate or fin bolted to the cross bars IF- and perforated for the passage .of a spring actuated latch or bolt I) mounted in the casting I I is a lever connected with the bolt E. whereby the bolt may be withdrawn from lot-king relation with the plate I).
(l are spring bands secured at. g to the Specification of Letters Patent.

side members B and at 7 to a plurality of blocks H conneeied together in pair by rods ll. H is a cross member connecting the outer blocks II, this may be a rod similar to it, the form shown is. however, preferredv The blocks H to which the sprin bands G are secured are preferably formed with an aroshaped"top it, as shown, the better to adapt them for the varying contour of the seat.
Having indicated the several parts by refence letters the operation of my invention will be readily understood.
To adjust the back which may be done while ()(L'UPIYIIIQ the chair, the lever l s forced outwardly thereby withdrawing Le bolt E from locking relation with the plat I). The back is then adjusted to the angle desired and the bolt allowed to enter the hole in the plate D corresponding therewith. It will now be seen that the back is tilted in either direction the forward part of the seat section (connected together as it is by means of the sJring bands G to the side members B) will automatically shape itself to the position of the limbs of the person 00- cnpying the chair. due to the L-shaped back causing the seat to arch-when the back is tilted,-the forward part of the seat automatically adjusting itself to the requirements of the occupant by virtue of the spring bands connecting the side members of the seat.
Having thus described my invention, what 'tionfwiiherebyytho latter are flexibly connected together and to the back portion 2. In a chair, tuft-ante, a tilting back portion having continuous side members pivoted to the frame, means for locking the back in a fixed position, a seat formed of a plurality of cross-members, and spring bands secured to the back portion and to each of the several cross-members of the seat portion, whereby the latter are flexibly connected together and to the back portion.
3. In a chair, a frame, an Lshaped tilting tothe tilting back, and means for locking 10 said back in a fixed position.
In testimony whereof, I sign'this specification in the presence of two Witnesses.
