MACHINE FOR MOLDING TILE-FACED BLOCKS.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM PASSMORE MEEKER and MAHLON S. DRAKE, citizens of the United States, and residing, respectively, in Maplewood and Newark, New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Molding Tile-Faced Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to machines which are intended for molding blocks of cement or similar material onto facing tile; and our improvements consist in the particulars hereinafter pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan View of our improved machine, the legs being omitted and a tile and block being shown in the right hand compartment and a curved tile in the left hand compartment; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the machine with the front lowered; Fig. 4 is an end elevation; and Fig. 3 is an end View of the movable bottom with a molded tile-faced block on it.
The same parts are referred to by corresponding reference letters in all the figures.
The bed A of the machine is supported upon suitable legs B B, and has a top C, provided with cores 0 c, fastened to it, the top being attached to the bed A by suitable fastenings as for instance screws a.
A movable mold-bottom or pallet L is pro vided with suitable openings Z Z to permit the cores 0 c to pass up through it, and with a base flange Z which rests upon the top C of the machine. The front D is attached to the bed by suitable hinges (Z (Z placed below the level of the movable bottom L and it is also provided with interior projections as e 6 adapted to support curved or irregularly bent tiles in position, and it also has suitable fastening devices, as the latch pins, d d. by which it may be locked fast to the movable back when the front and back of the ma chine are closed into position for use.
The back G is attached by suitable hinges g g to the bed of the machine on the same plane as the hinges (Z (Z, and it is provided with suitable partitions as h h, which divide the machine into the desired number of molding spaces.
The form shown in the drawings is designed to make four different styles of blocks, viz: the long double-cored block, the square block, a short round-cornered or bull-nosed block, and a long round-cornered block. But it will be readily under- Specification of Letters Patent.

stood that this arrangement of the spaces of the machine maybe modified as occasion demands.
A flat facing tile M and a curved tile N are also shown in Fig. l as in position in the machine; and in Figs. 1 and 3 the flat tile and cement block are also shown.
The partitions h h are tapered from above downward, and, preferably, from the back forward, in order to make them draw more readily from the cement when the machine is opened after the blocks have been molded therein; and this same principle of tapering is preferably applied to the inside of the ends H H, which are also attached to the back G, and are carried by it. The central partition is shown as having its forward end resting in a small groove in the front D, and this principle may be applied to the other partitions if desired. These ends are provided with suitable locking devices for securing them to the front D. In the drawings we have shown the ends as provided with lugs 70, between and below which is pivoted a latch Iwhich is provided with a heel to engage with the lug 70 so as to prevent the latch from dropping lower than desired, while, when the latch I is raised so as to clear the pin cZ, its back will engage with the lug j so that the latch may be used as a handle to turn over the back of the machine in the position indicated by the broken lines in Fig. 4, when it will rest upon and be supported by a suitable bracket a attached to the bed A.
In use the operation of our machine is as follows. The back G with its ends and partitions is closed down and the front D locked fast to it as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and the facing tiles provided with suitable undercut portions as m m and m m are placed in position. The mold spaces are then filled with a suitable cement as O which is pressed down and flattened OE, and the machine may then be opened by raising the latch I, throwing over the back G and dropping the front D into the position shown by the broken lines in Fig. 4. 'The bottom L is then raised, stripping the molded blocks from the cores 0 c, and the blocks may then be left upon the bottom L to set, or they may be removed atonce, if desired.
Having thus described our invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a machine for molding tile-faced blocks, the combination of a bed having tapered cores thereupon, a vertically removable mold-bottom provided with core apertures therethrough, a front and a back provided with ends and with intermediate partitions tapered from above downward and hinged to the bed below the level of the mold-bottom and a lock for securing the front and back together.
2. In a machine for molding tile-faced blocks, the combination of a bed having tapered cores thereupon, a vertically removable mold-bottom provided with core apertures therethrough, a front and a back provided with ends and with intermediate partitions vertically and longitudinally tapered and hinged to the bed below the level of the mold-bottom and a lock for securing the front and back together.
3. In a machine for molding tile-faced blocks, the combination of a bed having tapered cores thereupon, a vertically removable mold-bottoin provided with core apertures therethrough, a front and a back provided with ends beveled on their inner faces and with intermediate partitions and hinged to the bed below the level of the mold-bottom and a lock for securing the front and back together.
4. In a machine for molding tile-faced blocks, the combination of a bed having a detachable top provided with cores thereupon, a vertically removable mold-bottom provided with core apertures therethrough, a front provided with latch pins and a back provided with intermediate partitions tapered longitudinally and vertically and with ends beveled on their inner faces and provided on their outer faces with stop lugs and latches provided with extended handle ends and pivoted to said ends and adapted to engage with said latch pins, substantially as described.
