new and useful Improvements in Printers" Galleys, of which the following is a full,

clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates to galleys for holding printing types after the same have been set up in a composing stick or other means preparatory to making up a form ready for printing and it has for its primary object to provide a printers galley suitable for the described use or any analogous use, which shall be durable and rigid, simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.

With a view to the attainment of these ends, the invention consists in the features of novelty which will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a printers galley embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof on the line 2-2 Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 83, Fig. 1.

It is apparent that the galley comprises a bottom 1, two side walls, 2, 3, and an end wall 4:, the opposite end in galleys of this character being usually left open as appears in Fig. 1. The bottom and walls thus constituting the galley are made from a single strip or sheet of metal pressed or bent into the required form. The blank from which these elements are composed is pressed on three sides, that is to say, along its two longitudinal edges and across one end, to form heads 5, 6, the adjacent extremities of which terminate short of each other to form openings 5 at the corners of the galley, through which openings the water used in dampening the type will run off. After these beads are formed the edges of the blank are bent at right angles to its general plane to form the walls 2, 3, 4, each bead constituting the lower edge of the wall contiguous thereto and serving to not only strengthen and impart the requisite rigiditv to the bottom and walls but to enable the metal to be bent to constitute the walls without danger of fracturin it and without forming an inwardly roun ing or inclining corner where the bottom and sides conjoin as would be the case if the walls were bent directly from the bot- Specification of Letters Patent.

tom. Such an inclining or rounding corner, cutting into the plane of the inner face of the wall would, of course, be objectionable in a printers galley as it would prevent the types from being supported squarely on the bottom while resting in immediate contact with such inner face.

The walls 2, 3, 1, at the corners of the galley are respectively overlapped in one direc tion, as shown at 7 whereby the entire galley may be formed in three operations, one to bend the entire end and one to bend each side, the re-inforced corners or overlaps coming into place automatically so that they are ready for the solder or rivets, these overlaps being in this example of the invention a continuation of the side walls 2, S, which are bent at right angles to said side walls around the outer face of the end wall 4 for a portion of the length of the latter, thus bracing the end wall 1 against outward movement and at the same time imparting rigidity to the side walls as well as holding them against inward movement. These overlaps, if desired, may be subsequently soldered or brazed or otherwise secured. In thus forming the overlaps, it will be seen that they are made slightly less in depth than the total depth of the side wall, plus the depth of the bead 5, and as a consequence they will lie flush with the bead 6 at the end of the galley.

As a new and useful article of manufacture, a printers' galley comprising side and end walls, and a bottom formed integrally therewith of sheet metal, the adjacent corners of the walls of the galley being overlapped respectively in one direction and the longitudinal corners of the galley where the bottom conj oins with the walls being beaded in an outward direction, the adjacent extremities of the beaded portions terminating short of each other to form openings at the corners of the galley.
