Description

1 UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE. V
ALLEN O. .HANEY, OFJLIGONIER, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR T HANEY GAS ENGINE COM- PANY, OF LIGONIER, INDIANA.
No Drawing.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PROCESS FOR CAUSIN G SELF-IGNITION IN 'EXPLOSIVE-ENGINES.
To all whom "it may concern:
1 3e it known that I, ALLE O. HANEY, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Ligonier, in the county of Noble, in-the State of Indiana, haveinvented certain new and useful'lmprovements in Processes for if Causing Self-Ignition in Explosive-Engines; and I do hereby declare that the following 1s a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which Will enableothers skilled 1I1 the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
' My invention relates to improvements in the'process'or method of causing self-ignition'in explosive engines adapted to avoid the employment .of sparking means, high compression, hot tubes, or other adjacent hot surfaces, 'or an igniting flame.
It is Well known that heretofore to produce self-ignition in explosive engines it has been necessary to subject the explosive mixture to a high degree of compression in the explosive'chamber or in an auxiliary chamber; or to introduce the explosive mixture 'into' the explosive chamber and then oommingle it with airor a very Weak mixture previously sub eCted to high compression in such chamber; or to employ hot tubes; or
- to charge then'iixture with a high degree of 4 heat energy by contact with the highly heated walls of .the Working chamber, or
.-'other adjacent heated surfaces; or it has been necessary to make a combination of the hot surface anda moderate compression.
, The primary object of my present invention is to provide a process of causing selfignition in explosive engines under a low compression of the explosive mixture Without the necessity of energizing the same by :contact with or proximity to highly heated surfaces of any kind.
My invention consists of the process or method of producing self-ignition of the explosive mixture by so utilizing a portion of the heatene'rgy of the products of'combustion-as to cause an explosion thereof undera low compression.
Instead of depending solely or in part upon either a high compression .of the explosive mixture, or upon the highly heated walls'of the explosive chamber or other adjacent surfaces, I retain m the explosion chamber a suflicient portion, preferably approximately one-half, of the products of combustion at each exhaust therefrom, which residue is then mixed with the fuel to raise the temperature of each freshly admitted charge of fuel after the initial ignition to a point which Will self-ignite under a low compression thereof.
By the employment of my improved process the initial ignition in an explosive engine is produced by a match or any other suitable external means, after which the .engine is self-igniting under a compression pressure which may be varied from 51 pounds upward, whether the walls of the cylinder are hot or cold. I
It is found in practice that Where a throttle governor is used, and an explosion is missed self-ignition will cease, until another initial ignition is produced as before, because upon the missing of such explosion the exhaust gases are ejected from the workis thus evident that by the employment of PatentedNov. 23, 1909. Application filed luly 13, 1908. Serial No. 443,297. a
my improved process I eliminate completely the usual diiiiculties arising from the use of ignition devices, and I am able to secure good thermal efficiency by a low compression pressure in the. Working chamber, and at the same time maintain a low temperature of the cylinder Walls and pistons under all conditions of service.
The employment of my process also e11- ables the operator to utilize the greater portion of.the exhaust gases, and to maintain a low temperature of such gases at the exhaust thereof.
Having thus described my invention and the manner of employing the same what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
' 1. The herein described process of producing self-ignition in explosive engines, by retaining a portion of the products of combustion at each exhaust thereof, then mixing a fresh charge of the explosive mixture with such residue in the explosion chamber,
i of the Working mixture after each exhaust,
and then subjecting the same to alow com in low compression explosive engines, which consists in commingling in the explosive chamber a portion of the products of the combustion therein with each successive charge and then subjecting the mixture to a' low compression in the'saicl chamber. I
3. The method or process of producing self-i'gnitionin explosive'engines which consists in energizing each incoming charge of the explosive mixture by mixing therewith in the combustion chamber a portion of the plosive mixture, a proper quantity of theproducts of combustion after each exhaust thereof, and then sub ect1ng the same to a compression in the explosion chamber.
Signed by me at Ligonier, Noble c0unty,-f State of Indiana, this 9th day of July, 1908 ALLEN O. HANEY.
