To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD FREDERICK Ronnn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of C hicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Labeling-Machine, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to machines for affixing labels to bottles, et., and its object is to provide such a machine that will be economical in construction and simple and effective in operation. This object is attained by, and my'invention is embodied in, the following described mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my labeling machine; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same, on line 3-3 of Fig.2; Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section of the wiping apparatus; Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section of the paste container; F ig..6 is a vertical transverse section of the label container; Fig. 7 is a plan view of the locking device by which the radial arms 4, 5 and 6, are prevented from rotating; and Fig. 8 is a longitudinal vertical section of the label container.
From a suitable base 1 rise the supports 2, carrying a spindle or stud 3 on which rotate the radial arms 4, 5 and 6. Each of these arms is similarly bifurcated, having the lingers 7 as shown. A vertical shaft 8 rotated by suitable means as by the motor 9 driving the bevel gears 10 and 11, carries the circular disk 12: co-aXial with this shaft 8 is the shaft 13 lcarrying the radial arm 14 adaptedto engage by its pin 15 in one of the recesses 16 of a circular disk 17 borne by the radial arms 4, 5, and 6, and concentric with their aXis of rotation. Each engagement of the arm 14 rotates the radial arms 4, 5, and 6 one third of their revolution.
During the intervals between successive en- 5, and 6 are locked from turning by the pin 18 on the radial arm 19 carried on the same hub with the arm 14. This pin 1S is adapted to engage and travel in the rarc slots 2O of the circular disk 21 on the same hub with the disk 17 ,-and thus prevent during such en` gagement the radiall arms 4, 5, and 6 from rotating. The shaft 13 is rotated by the shaft 8 through the gears 48, 49, and 50 in the direction opposite to the rotation of the driving shaft 8.
Carried by the basev 1Y and disposed at an angular interval of 120 degrees apart, are the pastecontainer 22, the label container 23,- and the wiping apparatus'24. The paste container is provided with, and its open bottom li'sclosed by, engaging elastic rolls 25l as particularly shown in Fig. 5, between which' rolls the' ypaste flows down. This paste container is provided with squared lugs 26 spring-pressed downward at 27 and adaptedto' travel in longitudinal slots (as shown) "in the supporting Vparallel arms 2S of, abell crank lever fulcrumed at 29 on the base 1.' .The other arm 30 of this bell crank lever is preferably provided with a friction roll 31 which is engaged by a cam 32 carried by the disk 12, which engagement carries the paste container inward against the pressure of a spring 33 and distributes the paste by the contact of the low,- est roll 25, on the fingers 7- of the particular radial arm 4, 5, or 6 which is at the time directly opposite the paste container.
The label container 23 has a short vertical sliding movement on the base 1. It may construction shown, two of which are filled withv the labels 35 pressed by weights 36. The lower ends of the spaces formed by these partitions are slightly contracted, as shown in Fig. 6, sufcie'ntly to retain the labels therein from falling through. The label container is provided with a horizontal arm 37 having preferably a friction roll 38 which is engaged bya cam 39 carried by the disk 12, which engagement presses the label container downward against the pressure of a spring 34 until the lowest label is pressed on the fingers 7 (to which paste has been previously applied as heretofore stated) of the particular radial. arm 4, 5, or 6 which is at the time directly opposite and below the i label container. The label container rising by the spring 34 when the cam 39 passes out of'its engagement, the lowest label adheres to the lingers 7 and is carried around to a on the base 1. The cradle and bottle rest in a position (as shown in Fig. 3) slightly below the fingers 7 of the radial arms, until by the rotation of the disk 12 the cam 44 engages the friction roll 45 of the lever 46 fulcrumed at 47, which engagement carries against the pressure of a spring 51, the cradle and bottle upward, the bottle passing between the fingers 7 of the radial arm 4, 5, or 6 which is directly opposite and above it at the time, to which ngers the label has been previouslyT applied as above eX- plained. As the bottle rises between the fingers 7, the label is thus removed from them, and by the leaves 40 is pressed or wiped on the bottle and the labeling operation is complete. The cam 44 passing out of its engagement, the cradle and bottle descend and the bottle may be removed and a new bottle placed in the cradle, before the rotation of the radial arms is resumed.
It will be seen that the three operations of applying paste to the fingers 7, removing a label from the label container by the fingers to which paste has been applied, and afiixing a label to a bottle, are accomplished simultaneously and during each successive cessation of the rotation of the radial arms.
From the foregoing description, the operation of my labeling machine is manifest.
It is evident that my invention may be embodied in other and varying mechanisms without departing from its scope and spirit, and I do not propose to conne myself to the details of construction above shown and described.
I claim:
1. In a labeling machine having a paste container, a label holder, a. wiping apparatus adapted to aiiiX a pasted label to the work, all circularly disposed, and a movable cradle adapted to hold the work, the combination of a rotatable arm adapted to move into the operative positions of said container, holder and apparatus, a rotatable disk, means intermediate the disk and the arm to rotate the arm, means for applying paste from the container to the arm, means intermediate the disk and the label holder for carrying a label in the holder into contact with the paste so applied, and means intermediate the disk and the cradle for moving the cradle to carry said label and the work into operative engagement with the wiping apparatus.
2. In a labeling machine, the combination of a paste container, a label holder, a wiping apparatus adapted to aflix a pasted label to the work, a rotatable arm, a movable cradle adapted to hold the work, means for applying paste to the arm from the container, a rotatable cam-bearing disk, means intermediate the disk and the label holder to move by the rotation of the disk a label held in the holder into contact with the paste applied to the arm, and means intermediate the disk and the cradle to move by the rotation of the disk the cradle with the work and label into operative engagement with the wiping apparatus.
3. In a labeling machine, the combination of a rotatable arm and a paste container adapted to apply paste to that surface of the arm which lies in the plane of its rotation and having for such purpose a movement in the longitudinal direction of the arm.
4. In a labeling machine, the combination of three rotatable radial arms spaced at equal distances apart, a paste container having a movement toward and from the aXis of the arms rotation, a label holder, a wiping apparatus adapted to aiiiX a pasted label to the work, said container, holder, and appara-tus being circularly arranged at equal angular intervals, a movable cradle adapted to hold the work, means for rotating the arms and intermitting such rotation at the operative positions of the machine, means for moving the container to apply paste to the arms, means for carrying a label in the holder into contact with the paste so applied, and means for moving the cradle to carry said label and the work into operative engagement with the wiping apparatus.
5. In a labeling machine, the combination of a. movable paste-container, a movable label-holder, a wiping apparatus adapted to affix a pasted label to the work, said container, holder and apparatus being circularly disposed, a movable cradle adapted to hold the work, a rotatable arm having two fingers, a rotatable cam-bearing disk, means intermediate the disk and the paste container adapted to move the same into operative engagement with the fingers, means intermediate the disk and the label-holder adapted to move a label held therein into operative engagement with the pasted fingers, and means intermediate the disk and the cradle to move the same and the work and said label into operative engagement with the wiping apparatus.
6. In a labeling machine having a movable paste container, a movable label holder, a wiping apparatus adapted to aflix a pasted label to the work, all circularly disposed, and a movable cradle adapted to hold the work, the combination of a rotatable arm adapted to move into the operative positions of said container, holder and apparatus, a rotatable disk, means intermediate the disk and the arm to rotate the arm, means intermediate the disk and the container to move the same to apply paste to the arm, means intermediate the disk and the holder to move the same to carry a label into contact with the paste so applied, and means intermediate the disk and the cradle for moving the cradle to carry said label and the work into operative engagement with the wiping apparatus.
7. In a labeling machine, the combination of three rotatable radial arms spaced at equal distances apart, a paste container having a movement toward and from the axis of the arms rotation, a movable label holder, a wiping apparatus adapted to aiiX a pasted label to the work, said container, holder and apparatus being circularly arranged at equal angular distances apart, a movable cradle adapted to hold the work, a rotatable disk, means intermediate the disk and the arms to rotate the arms and to intermit such rotation at the operative positions of the machine, means intermediate the disk and the container to move the same to apply paste to the arms, means intermediate the disk and the holder to move the same to carry a label into contact with the paste so applied, and means intermediate the disk and the cradle for moving the cradle to carry said label and the work into operative engagement with the wiping apparatus.
