HARRY VAUGHAN RUDSTON READ, 0F LONDON, AND ROEERT HUNTER CAMPBELL, OF
' EDMONTON, ENGLAND.
i FIRE-EXTINGUISHER APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that we, HARRY VAUGHAN RUDSTON READ, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, of 1 Broad ,Street avenue, in the city of London, England, and {onEnT HUNTER CAMPBELL, a subject of the vKing' of Great Britain and Ireland, of Angel Road, Edmonton, in the county of Middlesex, England', have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire- Extinguisher4 'Ap-params, of which the following is a a very efficient and lconvenient construction of such apparatus which is not-liable to get out of order and which is very certain in action.
We will presume, for the purposes of description, that the improvements are applied.
to re extinguishers, to which they are especially applicable, and, from this description, the application of the invention to other analogous apparatus will also be understood.
/In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig; 2 is a plan, and -Fig.
3 is a vertical section .(withpart broken away) of a .fire-extinguisher constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 4 repre'sents a modification, .and Fig. 5 shows separately, in perspective, the. device -which acts as a seal.
. The body-part', or liquid-containing vessel 1 of the extinguisher is provided with a tubular connectlng piece 2 projecting some distance into the body-part and secured in an opening in the body 1 by a flange 3 on /4 the said connecting piece 2, being held between the interior part of the said body- -part 1 around the said opening and a rin of solder 4. The externally projecting en of the said connecting piece 2 is screw threaded and its interior is` rovided with a shoulder 5, on which the ange 6 of this container 7 is supported, the said flange 6 being held between the said shoulder 5 and the' lower end of a cylindrical piece 8, with Specification of Letters Patent. Application led March 29, 1909. Serial No. 486,556.
Patented Nov; 16, 1909.
a closed top 9, which piece 8 is a sliding tit in the connecting piece 2.
The cylindrical cap 10 is provided in its interior with a screw thread adapted to be screwed onto the projecting end ofthe said connecting piece 2, and the said cap 10 is provided with a washer 11 to' make a gastight ljoint between itself and the upper end of the connecting piece 2. The said cap 10 has formed in one with it a stuiiing box 13,
l adapted to have the gland 121 screwed into it.
The stem 16 is screwed, or otherwise xed, at one end into a plunger 17 capable of sliding in the cylindrical piece 8, the other end of the said stem 16 being adapted to be Screwed into a piece 15 which has a hollow 14 in it which can slide over the stuiling box 13, the said end piece 15 having Vpreferably a stand, or tripod, at its outer end, as shown.
Thel inner end of the said stem 16 carries the piercer proper 18 made of any suitable hard and non-corrosive metal. A -spring 19 is placed between the gland 12 and the outside ofv the hollow 14 in the end-piece 15, this spring 19 being suiiciently strong, not only to carry the weight of the chargedv extinguisher,`when it is in an inverted position and resting on the end piece 15, but also to extract the piercer 18 after it has pierced the closure of the container 7, so as to allow, with certainty, free passage for the gas from the container through the pierced opening, the gas passing `into the interior of the part 1 by openings 2 0 and 21 made respectively in the cylindrical piece 8 and the connecting piece 2, the said cylindrical piece 8 having in it a circular groove -22to give communica- .tion between the openings 20 and 21 for the passage ofv the gas into the body-part 1 of the extinguisher, so that the said openings 20 and 21 need not be in line with each other. Between the underside of the endpiece 15 and thecap 10 is a piece 23 (shown separately in Fig. 5) made of a substance which will easily break-and consisting of an u right piece joining upper and lower side pieces shaped to embrace the stuing box 13,
the endsof this piece 23, when it is in place, being sealed for instance by a seal 24 sealing a wire secured to each end of the said piece 23, so that the piece 23 cannot be removed without breaking the seal 24. When the capsule 7 is-opened by the piercer 18, the
piece 23 is fractured, and by Aits condition it can readily be seen whether the capsule has been opened or whether it is in working order.
Attached to the connecting piece 2 is a wire 32, preferably coiled as shown, by which the lever to which water may be charged into the body part 1 can be seen as it is necessary to leave a space above the liquid suiiicient to prevent a dangerous pressure when the gas is released and to'allow the entering gas to efficiently apply the pressure for ejecting the water.
The outlet for water and gas from the apparatus is at 25, and is preferably guided by a perforated or reticulated shield 26, and is shown as being provided with a hose 27 having a nozzle 28 and also, if required, a tap 29. The hose is preferably made light and strengthened by wire armoring.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the head-piece 15 is replaced by a simple knob 30 to take' the bearing of the spring 19 and on the shoulder 5 of the connecting piece 2 is supported a holder 33 for the container 7 when 1t is not provided with a flange 6 capable of being supported on a shoulder, as in Fig. 3. A wire, similar to that shown at 32 in Fig. 3, can be attached to the connecting piece 2 for the purpose of indicating the level to' which Water may be charged into the body part 1. vThe parts which4 correspond with those shown in the other figures are smarked with the saine reference numerals. The piercing can be effected by reversing the extinguisher and striking its head-piece 15 or knob 30 on the floor, or other convenient place, for which purpose we have shown handles 31 both above and below. The head piece 15,' or knob 30, is thus forced inward and the sealing piece 23 is fractured and the piercer 18 penetrates the closure of the container 7 and then the spring 19 withdraws ythe piercer 18, and the container 7 cannot having a siphon tube for the outlet of the'- water and (gas, but, if desired, a Siphon tube can be use Fig. 3, when the piercing can be effected by striking the head piece or knob with a hammer or other instrument, or b holding it in a horizontal position and strikin it against a wall, for instance. Althoug` we' have mentioned water, of course any suitable liquid or solution can be charged -into the extinguisher or the like.
We claim as our invention- In re extinguishers and other liquid ejection apparatus, into which gas is liberated from a container of compressed or liqueed as indicated in dotted lines in gas, the combination with the body part of the apparatus of a cylindrical connecting piece provided with a shoulder to support the container, a cylindrical piece capable of being inserted in the 'said connecting piece to hold the container in position a alnst the shoulder, a cap secured to the sai connecting piece and provided with a stuiling box, l
a stem carryin a piercer and passing through thestu g box, a plunger movable in the cylindrical piece and connected /to one end of the stem and an end piece connected to the other end of the stem tand adapted to be proj eoted outward by a spring together with sealed means for preventing accidental actuation of said plunger, all substantially as hereinbefore described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
