TIE-HOLDER.

Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. FELIX, a citizen of the lUnited States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Tie-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates more particularly to a device for holding the usual form of tie to a collar button under either or both of the collar tabs or flaps.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient device which may be applied to the usual form of tie and so placed and held to the collar button that the tie is not likely to become displaced or detached therefrom without the removal of one or both tabs or flaps of the collar from the button, thus overcoming the objections incident to the ordinary form of fastening and holding means of what are called bat ties and the like, in which said devices are difhcult to fasten to the collar button, and in which the tie is likely to become detached or the fastener to be torn from the tie while fastening the tie to the collar button.

Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and eilicient device as an attachment to a tie whereby the same may be used on the ordinary form of collar button and the tie more securely held in position.

A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and eiiicient device for a tie which may be easily made and applied to the tie, and in which two relatively movable members are held togethei` in such a way that the tie may be folded over to permit the holder to be attached to the collar button and the tie then moved to its proper position relatively to the collar.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, and will then be pointed out in the claim at the end of the description.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of one form of tie having one form of -holder or attachment embodying` my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through a collar and shirt showing the position of the tie and holder as applied to the collar button between the collar flaps or tabs. Fig. 3 is a detail rear elevation of one form of tie holder. Fig. i is a vertical section taken on Specification of Letters Patent.

the line IV-IV of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view taken on the line V-V of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 shows a slightly diiferent form of holder, in which the holder does not form a permanent part of the tie.

The tie 19 may be of any suitable form, as for example what is known as the bat tie, and to the rear thereof and under the part 11 of the tie is held the member 12 of a holding device 13. The member 12 may comprise a strip of metal which is bent to provide a substantially triangular loop portion 14 and terminates lin two parallel abutting parts 15, the upper ends of which are held together by a band or member 16, and in the loop portion 14e is held the member 17 which is adapted to fit over the shank 18 of a collar button 19. This member 17 is relatively movable with respect to the member 12 so as to be hinged or pivoted thereto, and said member 17 has a substantially U-shaped part 19 which is adapted to lit over the shank of the collar button 19, and said member 17 may be made of a single piece of wire, which after being bent to form the loop 19a has all extended portion, as 19, at substantially right angles to the stem portions 20 of said loop. The extended portions 19" have an angular part 21 which is adapted to lit within the triangular loop portion 14 of the mem` ber 12, and has two engaging surfaces 22 and 23 at or near each end which are adapted to engage the sides 24; and 25 of the loop or enlarged portion 14.- of the member 12. The engaging parts 22 and 23 at each end of the holder within the loop are a-ngularly formed with respect to the extended part 19h, and said sides 24e and 25 of the member 12 are adapted to yield and are so formed that said engaging parts will hold the member 12 in an upright position when the loop 19aL is placed over the shank of the collar button, but which permits the member 12 to be moved relatively to the member 17 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. t, and thereby permit the tie to be folded over and held in this position until the holder is properly placed over the collar button.

The extended angular part 19b of the member 17 is of suiiicient length to permit either or both of the collar tabs or flaps 26 and 27 in fastening the same to the collar button to be placed over the loop portion of the member 17. As shown the loop portion is placed between the tabs 26 and 27 so that be detached from the collar button Without disengaging the tabs' or flaps therefrom. It will be seen that the member 17 may be readily slipped over the usual form of collar button without any trouble whatever, and either or both of the collar tabs fastened in position to hold the member 17 to the collar button, and that during this operation the tie may be folded over entirely out of the way, and after the collar has been properly fastened the tie with the member 12 held thereto may be shifted on the member 17 so that the engaging parts 22 and 23 of said member 17 being forced against the sides 24: and 25 of the triangular loop part 14 will hold the tie in its proper position.

In Fig. G the holder 28 is somewhat diiferently constructed, and said holder or clasp is adapted for ties which may be formed by persons to wear the same from a strip or ribbon. As shown the member 29 is formed of a metallic plate in which are verticallyextending openings 30 and 31 through which the ribbon or fabric may be passed as shown in dotted lines and one end of said member 29 is bent so as to provide a substantially triangular loo-p portion 31 for the pivoting end 32 of the member 33 which is adapted to be passed over and held to the collar button as in the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5. The loop portion 31 is formed by bending the body of the member 29 angularly so as to have its outer end 34C abutting against the inner surface of the part 35 of the member 29 so as to form two sides 36 and 37 which are adapted to yield sufficiently to permit the engaging parts of the member 33 to4 frictionally hold the same either in an upright position or in a folded position similar to that shown in Fig. 4 and in substantially the same manner as that already described. The two members thus form a hinge and the engaging part of one member is adapted to frictionally hold the other member in the position the tie ordinarily assumes while in use, but which permits the tie to be moved over with the engaging part as a pivot to permit the collar tabs to be attached to or removed from the collar button and the fastening member of the tie holder' also removed from the collar v button.

From the foregoing it will be seen thatza simple and eiicient tie holder is provided in which' two relatively movable members are so hinged together that one member may beV attached to the usual form of tie in such a way that the other member may be readily slipped over and held by the flaps or tabs of the collar to the usual form of collar button; that saidV holder overcomes the objections present in the ordinary form of fastener or holder for ties of the character referred to; that by providing a fastening member which can slip over the tie and the 65 tabs fastened over the same7 the tie may be more readily and easily fastened and held in iosition, and that said tie holder is simple in construction and may be readily made and attached to the usual form of tie or used in connection with various forms of ties.
