STAR-CARPET EASTENER.
4Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented N ov. 9, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. KIRsoH, citizen of the United States, residing at Three Rivers, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stair- Carpet Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in a device for securing stair carpets without driving nails or tacks through the said carpet, the object being to provide a simple and eflicient device of this character, and consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrat-V ing this invention: vFigure -1 is a front elevation of a stair carpet fastener constructed in accordance with my invention. Figs. -2- and -3-f are transverse sections of the same on the lines Qf-Q and 3 3 respectively of Fig. --1-. Fig. ilis a fragmentary rear elevation of the same. Fig. -5- is a fragmentary longitudinal section of the same on the line 5-5 of Fig. -l-. Fig. -6- is a fragmentary vertical section of a stairway equipped with a carpet secured by means of fasteners constructed in accordance with my invention.
The objects of my invention are: First: To provide a stair carpet fastener which is adjustable in length to secure carpets of various widths. Second: To provide a fastener which fits very snugly in the corner and against the carpet so as to be out of the way and present a Vvery neat appearance. Third: To provide a fastener which is easily removed and replaced without necessitating the removal and replacement of nails or tacks whereby the carpet may be easily moved with sufcient frequency to distribute wear thereon. Fourth: To provide a fastener which is sufficiently stilf and durable to firmly hold the carpet in place without the use of nails or tacks and which is at the same time inexpensive and easily mounted and operated.
The fastener comprises end plates A of rectangular form equipped with integral flanges B, C and D, the flanges C being dispo/ s/led at opposite ends of the plate A and eX- tending at an angle of forty-five degrees thereto, said flanges being provided with openings for the passage of nails or screws by means of which the plate A is secured in the corner of the step in an obvious manner, said plate being disposed at an angle of yforty-five degrees to the tread and riser when secured. The flange B is triangular and eX- tends at an incline in a direction opposite to the direction of extension of the flanges C, the free end thereof extending into the corner and the side edges thereof lying in contact with the tread and riser respectively. The flange D is disposed opposite the iiange B and is flush with the plate A, said flange D being provided in its middle portion with an opening E. The said end plates A are mounted in opposed relation on opposite sides of the stair carpet and serve to secure the fastening strips. The latter consists of two strips F and G of sheet metal each provided on its side edges with flanges H eX- tending at an angle of forty-live degrees thereto. The strip or member F overlaps the strip or member G and is provided adjacent the overlapping end with cleats I which are bent over so that the freeends thereof engage the outer faces of the lianges H of the member Gr, said cleats serving to telescopically connect or couple said mem bers. Adjacent the free ends of the middle or web portions of the said members F and G are two projections J which are adapted to enter the openings E in the flanges D of the plate A to secure said strips to the latter. The said cleats I consist of tongues formed by cutting U-shaped incisions in the member F in a well known manner and theprojections J are formed by drawing up the metal to form a concavo-convex portion as is commonly practiced.
In operation the stair carpet is laid to pass between the plates A and is pressed into the corners formed by the meeting of treads and risers. The fastening strips are then mounted inV place by laying the same upon the carpet in the said corners and inserting the free end of the member F underneath the flange D of one plate A so that the projection J of said member enters the opening E in said flange D. The free portion of said member is then firmly pressed into the corner with one hand and the member G then moved longitudinally until its free end passes under the iange D of the other plate A and the projection J and opening E engage each other. rthe strip is thus firmly secured and prevents the stair carpet from being drawn out of the said corners.
Where stair carpets of unusual Width, stiffness or Weight of body are employed, it becomes necessary to employ fastening means between the ends of the fastening strip to prevent bellying of the latter. To this end the member F is provided in its middle or Web portion with one or more perforations K and the strip G is provided in its corresponding part with a longitudinal slot L registering With said perforations and permitting free passage of the shanks of nails or screws through the middle portion of said fastening strip.
The device is very simple and efficient, and is obviously very easily operated.
I claimas my invention:
l. A stair carpet fastener comprisingfastening plates disposed on opposite sides of the carpet and secured in the corner formed by the meeting of the tread and riser, flanges on said plates extending toward the carpet, and provided with openings, and longitudinally adjustable fastening strips provided at their ends with projections, said ends being adapted to pass under said flanges of said plates and said projections entering the openings in the latter.
2. A stair carpet fastener comprising fastening plates disposed on opposite sides ot" the carpet and secured 1n the corner formed by the meeting of the tread and riser, flanges A on said plates extending toward the carpet, and provided with openings, and longitudinally adj ustable'fastening strips having laring side flanges and provided at their ends with projections, said ends being adapted to pass under said flanges of said plates and said projections entering the openings in the latter.
3. A stair carpet fastener comprising end plates provided with flanges extending at an angle of forty-live degrees to said plate and RUDOLPH VM. Lo'rz, M. M. BOYLE.
