Specification of Letters Patent.
COMBINED OIL AND GREASE GUN.
Patented Nov. 9, 1909.
Application filed April 17, 1909. Serial No. 490,549.
gun or as a grease gun, the above object being obtamed by a very simple device which is so arranged that the plunger may be moved along the barrel of the gun either by a rotary movement of itsspirally grooved shank or by a longitudinal non-rotary move ment of the said shank.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 represents the combined oil and grease gun in side elevation, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section through the same, the shank engaging nut being clamped to the .barrel of the gun by the lock nut for rendering the gun suitable for ejecting grease or heavy oils by a rotary movement of the plunger shank, Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal central section showing the shank engaging nut released from the barrel to permit the longitudinal movement of the plunger shank without rotating the same for rendering the gun suitable for ejecting lighter oils, Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken in the plane of the line A-A of Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken in the plane of the line BB of Fig. 3, Figs. 6 and 7 are enlarged detail side and end views of the lock nut, Figs. 8 and 9, are detail end and sectional views of the shank engaging nut, and Fig. 10 is an enlarged outside view of the barrel cap, showing clearly the recess therein for receiving the shank engaging nut and. inner end of the 1 lock nut;
The barrel of the gun is denoted by 1 its rear cap by 2 and its removable front cap by 3. This front cap is provided with a removable nozzle 4 and is also provided with a rim 5 for facilitatin the screwing on and off of the front cap. T e plunger is denoted by 6 and itis provided with a rearwardly extended spirally grooved shank 7 which passes centrally through the rear cap 20f the barrel. I
The rear end of the shank 7 is provided with a suitable handle 8.
A centrally arranged recess 9 is formed in the rear cap 2 around the hole 10 through which the plunger shank freely passes and within this recess 9 there is located the shank engaging nut 11, which nut is'provided with one or more spirally arranged lugs 12 which enter the spiral grooves in the shank 7. This-nut 11 may beclamped to or released from the cap by the lock nut 13,
which is herein shown as a thumb nut and is provided with an exterior screw threaded portion 14.- engaged'with an interior screw threaded port1on= 15 of the recess 9. This lock nut loosely surrounds the shank 7 of.
the plunger.
When it is desired to use the gun as a grease gun, the lock nut 13 is screwed inwardly to clamp the shank engaging nut 11 to the rear barrel cap 2. The plunger may then be moved along within its barrel by rotating the handle 8 and thereby the shank'7. This will permit the ejection of the grease or heavy 011 with exactness.
WVhcn it is desired to use the gun as an oil gun, the lock nut 13 is unscrewed sufliciently to release the shank enga in nut 11. A. direct non-rotary longitu in& movement of the shank may'then be obtained, as the nut 11 will be permitted to rotate around the shank.- This will permit the rapid dis- 7 charge of the light oil from the gun.
.When the gun is used as a grease gun, the
front cap 3 may be unscrewed from the outer end of the barrel for filling the barrel with the grease or heavy oil. The front cap may then be replaced.
The nozzle 4 may be unscrewed from the front. can for the purpose of insertin a nozzle o another character if so desire What I claim is:
lkA combined oil and grease gun comprising a barrel, a plunger having a spirally grooved shank, a shank-engagin nut and a. lock nut "for clamping the shan nut toand releasing it from the barrel.
2. A combined oil and grease gun comprising a barrel having arecess in its rear end, a plunger having a spirally grooved shank engaging passing through said recess, a shank-engag- 7 111g nut located in the recessand a lock nut presence of two witnesses, this hvelft'hday havinga screw threaded enga ement with of April 1909.
