UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. REYNOLDS, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE MEILINK MANUFACTUR- ING COMPANY, TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
WALL-SAFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 23, 1909. Serial No. 491,839.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. REY- NOLDS, a citizen of the United States, fresiding at Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Wall-Safe, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to features of considerable manufacturing advantage in the production and installation of wall safes.
This invention has utility when embodied in wall safes which are to be built in or embedded in a wall, as of masonry, said safes to be later equipped with the ultimate finishing and closure features incidental to a sightly and desirable permanent outfit.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view, with parts broken away of an embodiment of the invention in a wall:
safe as embedded or built in a masonry wall;
and Fig. 2 is a detail view on an enlarged scale, showing a section adjacent the wall safe opening, illustrating fully the relation of the finish parts as well as one way in which the attachable door casing maybe mounted against removal.
Embedded in the masonry wall 1 is the wall safe 2 partially anchored in the wall by a wire mesh and provided with the opening 3 therein. Mounted about said opening 3 and overlapping the holes 4 in the safe box 2, which holes 4 are distributed around said opening 3, is the rim or door jamb 5 having therein square holes 6. The holes 4, 6, are similarly spaced so that bolts or holding means 7 may extend therethrough to attach this door jamb or rim 5 to the wall safe after the safe has been built in or embedded in a wall.
The door 8 is mounted by extension hinge 9 to swing into position against the door jamb 5, on the opposite side of which jamb or rim the locking bolts engage, to form a compact and effective device for holding the door rigidly closed. Surrounding the closed door 8 and interlocked with the jamb 5 is the frame member 10 having the curved outward flange 11. The members 5, 10, 11, comprise a door-casing or complete door frame, and as shown are attachable to the wall safe after the safe box is installed in a wall.
Coacting with the outer flange or rim 11 of the door frame is the telescoping sleeve 12 movable to frictionally hold and seat joint.
about the flange 11. Sleeve 12 merges into finish flange 13, the outwardly spreading portion of which serves to conceal the joint or break in the wall or plastering surrounding the wall safe opening. Sleeve 12 with its flange 13 comprises a finish rim which is adjustable toward and from the safe box 2 and the door frame 5, 10, 11. The frictionally holding sleeve 12 of this rim readily permits of this independent adjustment. In placing this finish rim in position, it is forced inward about the flange 11 and down to the surrounding wall surface, thereby effectually and neatly closing the masonry Furthermore, when it is desired to re-decorate, the finish rim may be slipped oif during the process and later replaced to cover the joint. To take care of the various thickness of decorations, as well as irregularities in the wall finish, this finish rim permits, by its frictional engagement, quick and accurate adjustment.
The general structure disclosed is shown as of sheet metal, to which it is especially adaptable. The cutting and forming of the parts by dies, insures that uniformity and regularity of output which is of great importance in manufacturing. There is general interchangeability, lightness, and desirable finish to accord with interior decorations for the most fastidious, while the toughness and strength of the structure confirm the safety feature of its usefulness.
In installing these wall safes, the box portion of the safe proper is embedded in the walls of a building, preferably during erection. When the walls are completed, decorated and the building ready for occupancy otherwise, the attachable door frame or casing 5, 10, 11, together with the hinge 9 and door 8 are placed in position over the opening 3 of the box 2, and the nuts turned up to tight holding position on the non-removable bolts 7. The portions of the bolts protruding beyond the nuts are then mutilated to preclude any change of adjustment, which might mean a loosening up of the door frame. There is added strength in this positive holding of the frame against removal, for which there is no occasion, while attachable feature permits application of the finish parts after plastering to save finish from violent attacks at such time. The finish rim 12, 13, is then forced into snug seating relation about the frame and against the wall.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a wall safe adapted to be embedded in a wall, said safe having an opening, of a door frame attachableto the safe after the safe is embedded in a wall, and a finish rim engaging said frame and independently adjustable toward and from the safe.
2. A wall safe adapted to be built into a Wall, said safe having a side of uniform thickness provided with an opening, a frame for the opening forming a door jamb, a door hinged to move into seating relation with the jamb, and an endless rim adjustable toward andfrom'the safe to finish to the wall surrounding the opening.
3. The combination with a masonry wall, of a safe having an opening surrounded by the wall, a hinged circular door mounted to close the opening, a frame for the door, and a rim to finish the joint of the wall surrounding the opening, said rim adjustable toward and from the safe independently of the door frame.
4. A wall safe adapted to be built into a wall, said safe having an opening, a door frame attachable at the opening after the safe is built into a wall, a hinged door mounted to seat in said frame, and a finish rim adjustable independently of the door frame, said rim having an inwardly extending frictional holding flange.
5. A wall safe having an opening, a casing for the opening, a door for the casing, and an adjustable endless finish rim having an inwardly extending frictional holding flange surrounding the casing.
6. A wall safe having an opening, a casing for said opening, a door hinged to seat in said casing, and a sheet metal finish rim for the joint between the wall and the safe opening, said finish rim being adjustable relatively to the safe.
7. A wall safe having an opening, a door frame for said opening, a door hinged to close said opening, and a sheet metal finish rim having an inwardly extending sleeve portion adjacent the safe opening, said finish rim being adjustable toward and from the safe.
8. A wall safe having an opening, a door frame having a sheet metal door jamb for said opening, a door hinged to seat against said jamb, and an adjustable finish rim for the opening and adjustable toward said jamb, said rim having a spreading portion for seating against a wall.
9. A wall safe adapted to be built into a wall, said safe having an opening, a door casing attachable at the opening after the safe has been built into a Wall, holding means for the casing to preclude removal after attachment to the safe, a hinged door mounted to seat in said casing, and a finish rim coacting with and adjustable independently of the door casing.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
WM. H. REYNOLDS.
