Description

P. W. MYERS. DEVICE FOR CLEANING BRUSHES OF CARPET SWEEPERS. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 25, 1909 QQQLQEWB Patented Nov. @1969.
3 41mm for UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FANNY WALDRON MYERS, OF NEW YORK, N.
DEVICE FOR CLEANING BRUSHES OF CARPET-SWEEPERS.
To all t vl o'm it may concern:
Be it known that I, FANNY \VALDRON Mrnns, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at New York, in the county of New York and-State of New York, have invented a new and useful Device for Cleaning Brushes of Carpet-Sweepers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for cleaning the brushes of carpet sweepers, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and inexpensive device whereby threads, hair, lint and the like may be readily removed from the bristles of a rotary brush, means also being employed for cleaning the core of the brush between the tufts of bristles.
A further object is to provide a device of this character having teeth designed, when applied to a revoluble brush, to extend radially in relation thereto so as to prevent the threads, hair, etc., from pulling off of the teeth. I
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel details of construction andcznnbinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, the pret'erred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof on a reduced scale, the brush to be cleaned being indicated by dotted lines.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference 1 designates a handle having a flat head 2 at one end, said head fitting snugly within a sleeve 3 preferably formed of metaland provided on one side with a Hat tubular extension t in which are secured the bristles ot a llat brush 5, which, as shown in the drawing, is arranged at right angles to the head 2 and the sleeve 3. The opposed side of the sleeve 3 has a series of wires 6 soldered or otherwise secured thereon and extending transversely thereof, said wires projecting beyond the side edges of the head 2 andterminating in lingers T which converge so as to slightly overhang the sleeve 3. These wires and lingers may be made Specification of Letters Patent.

of spring metal so as to be resilient to a certain extent.
In using the device for the purpose of cleaning a rotary brush such as used within a carpet-sweeper the fingers '7 are forced between the bristles of the brush and, in view of the angles at which they are arranged, will extend radially within the brush. It will be apparent therefore that should the fingers be drawn around the brush or the brush rotated these fingers will collect the hair, threads, etc., and pull them from the bristles. By extending the fingers radially within the brush there is no danger of the threads etc., being drawn along the fingers and off of the ends thereof, as would be the case should said fingers be extended at right angles from the head 2 of'the device. As the fingers '4' and the wires 6 are formed of spring metal they are free to give to a slight extent should they become engaged in some tangled particles difiicult to remove.
There is therefore little danger of 'the fingers pulling the bristles of the rotary brush out of the core, as might be the case should the fingers be unyielding. After the hairs, etc., have been removed from the brush by means of these fingers 6 the device can be reversed and the flat brush 5 inserted between the rows of bristles and used for cleaning the core of the rotary brush.
It will beseen that this device is simple,
duri hle and compact in constructionand constitutes efficient means for quickly and thoroughly cleaning brushes of the type mentioned;
Obviously various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of the invention.
What is claimed is 1- 1. A device of the class described including a sleeve, parallel spring Wires secured thereon and extending beyond opposite portions thereof, the terminals of each wire constituting converging spring fingers, and a handle insertible into the sleeve.
2. The combination with a handle, of a sleeve thereon, a series of parallel members secured upon the sleeve and extending at right angles to the longitudinal center of the handle, and opposed series of resilient as my own, I have hereto affixed my signafingers fonged by the end; gf' thedmembers, ture in the presence of two witnesses. sai series eing' supporte eyon opposite 1 portions of the sleeve and converging tot FANNIE WALD-RON MYERS 5 ward their free ends, all of the fingers of l Witnesses:
each series being disposed in the same plane, 1 JOHN THUMM,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I JULIA. VVALDRON.
