REVERSIBLE PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 25, 1909.
Serial No. 498,259.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILHnLu KOEHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spielerville, in the county of Logan and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in reversible plows and more particularly to that class adapted to be used 1 as a breaking plow and my object is to prothe mold board broken away, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view as seen on line 22, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail, horizontal sectional view disclosing more particularly the separate land side and its means of connection with the mold board, the same also showing the standard receiving loops of said means of connection.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the beam of the plow, which may be constructed in any preferred manner and 2 indicates the standard depending therefrom, and to the lower end of said standard is pivotally secured my improved form of mold board 3.
The upper and lower edges of the mold board 3 have secured thereto the usual form of plow shares 1 and 5, which are removably secured to the mold board, while the forward edge of the mold board is concave to form a cutting edge 6, said cutting edge being so formed as to cooperate with the inclined faces of the plow shares and causing said mold board to properly scour.
Rotatably mounted in the lower end of the standard 2 is a shaft 7 the forward end of which is attached to the inner face of the mold board 3, while the outer end thereof is extended through an auxiliary standard 8 placed at a distance in the rear of the standard 2 and attached at its upper end to the beam 1, a head 9 being provided at the inner end of the shaft to which the mold board is secured, while a collar 10 is placed over the rear end of the shaft and rests against the rear face of the auxiliary standard S, a pin 11 being introduced through the shaft to hold the collar in position thereon, said collar and head preventing longitudinal movement of the shaft. In this manner, it will be readily seen that the shaft can be readily rotated and the mold board changed from one side of the beam to the other, thereby changing the direction in which the soil will be turned during the plowing operation, thus providing either a right or left hand breaking plow. Mounted upon the shaft 7 and between the two standards, is a plate 12, each end of which is provided with an angular extension 13, which is adapted to engage the bottom of the furrow, said plate forming a land side for the plow and is rigidly connected to the mold board by means of straps 14:, the forwardends of the straps being attached to a plate 15 at the forward end of the mold board and plow shares, said plate being shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and is attached to the mold board and shares in any suitable manner.
The straps 14 in their length, are provided with loops 16, which are adapted to extend across the two edges and one face of the standard 2 and thus limit the swinging movement of the mold board in either direction, it being understood that but one of the loops engages the standard at a time.
The mold board is held in its adjusted position by means of rods 17 one of said rods extending at each side of the standard 2 and are secured at their upper ends to a lever 18, the forward end of the lever being pivotally mounted between ears 19 on the beam, while the opposite end of the lever is extended in position to be grasped by the plowman to raise or lower said pins, the rear end of the lever normally resting on a brace rod 20 extending between the handles 21 of the plow.

manner to the beam 1 and the ears are lo cated immediately above the point of engagement of the loop 16 with the standard 2, while the rods 17 are of suflicient length to extend downwardly substantially the full height of the loops and when one of the loops is introduced between the standard and one of the rods, it will be readily understood that the mold board will be rigidly held in its adjusted position.
The rear end of the mold board 3 is suitably braced by extending an eye bolt 2-1 from the shaft 7 to the mold board, the eye 25 of the bolt 24 being introduced around the shaft 7 while the opposite end of the bolt is extended through the rear end of the mold. board and fastened therein in any suitable manner, while the handles 21 are supported through the medium of brace bars '26, the lower ends of which are attached to the auxiliary standards 8 and the upper ends thereof to the handles 21.
The plow as shown, will, when properly applied, turn the soil to the right, but should it be desired to throw the soil in the opposite direction, the lever 18 is elevated until the rods 17 are raised out of the path of the upper loop 16, when the shaft 7 is rotated, the lower end of the mold board moving to the left and passing below the standard 2, the rotating movement continuing until the share 41 is in position to rest upon the ground and the loop 16 adjacent the share 5, moves into engagement with the upper portion of the standard 2, when the lever 18 is again lowered and the rod at the opposite side of the standard, moved into engagement with the outer face of the loop, when the plow is ready for use.
This form of plow is peculiarly adaptable in case of rolling or hilly land, but it will be understood that the same can be used for turning all kinds of soil and it will likewise be seen that the mold board can be practically instantly changed to produce a right or left hand plow.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In a plow construction of the class described, the combination with a beam having a standard depending therefrom and an auxiliary standard in the rear thereof; of a shaft rotatably mounted in the lower ends of said standards, a mold board fixed to one end of said shaft, a share at each edge of the mold board, a landside, straps fixed to said land side and said moldboard and havingloops thereon intermediate of said landside and moldboard to receive the first referred to standard and means to hold the mold board in its adjusted position.
2. In a plow construction, the combination with a beam having a standard; of a shaft rotatably mounted in said standard, a moldboard fixed to said shaft and having a share at the upper and lower edges thereof, a plate attached to said shaft and constituting a land side, straps connecting said plate to the mold board, said straps having looped portions intermediate of said land side and said mold board and means to engage said straps and hold said mold board in its adjusted position.
3. In a plow construction, the combination with a beam and a standard therefor of a shaft rotatably mounted on said standard, a mold board attached to said shaft and adapted to rotate therewith, plow shares at the upper and lower edges of the mold board, a plate forming a land side and provided intermediate of said landside plate and moldboard with loops to receive said stand ard, loops connecting said plate to the mold board, rods adapted to hold said straps in engagement with the standard and the mold board againstrotat-ion and means to raise and lower said rods.
4:. In a plow construction, the combination with a beam having a standard; of a shaft rotatably mounted in said standard, a plate having right angled lateral extensions at its ends, straps connecting the plate to the mold board, said straps having loops therein intermediate of said plate and mold board to receive the standard, rods adapted to hold the straps in engagement with the standard and a lever to which said rods are secured, whereby when the lever is operated, said rods will be moved into or out of engagement with the straps.
