Specification of Letters-Patent.
Application filed June 12,1909. Serial No. 501,758.
Toall whom it may concern: 1 Be it knownthat I, BERNARD A. GEURINK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and
- State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful- Improvement in Gas-Burners, of which;
visionof a gas burner wherein ,a more thorough combustion and correspondingly economical use of'the fuel is obtained than in the prevailing constructions, by so disposing the several parts of the burner that the air necessary to complete combustion may have free access to all such parts.
'To the accomplishment of this object, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the followin description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of a burner embodying my improved construction; Fig. 2 is a central ver-' tical section of the same on the line 22 Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 isa plan view, on a smaller scale of a modified constructlon of burner.
The mixing chamber A of my improved burner need not differ from that ordinarily employed in similar. connections; the gas is admitted through the central opening a from a supplyipe (not shown) and there intermixed with a proper amount of. air, such air supply being controlled by adjustment of the apertured plate a that closes the outer end of the combustion chamber. It is to the burner proper that particular attention is desired. This will be seen to comprise an outward annular chamber B directly connected with such mixing chamber A, from which annular chamber arms 6 extend-radially inward towardthe center of the burner but do not meet, so that such center is left unobstructed. The number of arms 6- may vary, but willfpreferably-be four, as shown, and should the diameter of the burner be .such as to leave too much space between the adjacent radiating arms, other shorter arms (1 may be provided be-. tween the aforesaid arms, as shown in Fig. 3. Such shorter arms likewise do not meet with the longer arms, but an unobstructed passage for air is left around each arm, whether short or long. The outer annular chamber, together with the arms are pro vided with apertures for the escape of the gas therefrom, which apertures may be in the form of jets or otherwise, as found best suited to the particular fuel employed,
From the foregoing construction of my improved burner, it will be obvious that air is supplied freely to the gas issuing from both the annular chamber and the several arms of the burner, and that particularly the gas discharged fromthe inner ends of the radiating members, is afforded an ample supply to insure a clear, clean. flame. This is a marked distinction from the more familiar construction of burner, wherein the arms radiate outwardly from a central Patented N02 9, 1909.. I
chamber. In burners thus constructed, while the gas may burn clear at the outer ends of the'arms, there is apt to be an insufiicient supply of air for the complete combustion of the gas discharged from the center, and even where the gas is-permitted to escape from the arms only, the center being left blank, it is obvious that there exists a dead space in the center of the burner that more or lessafiects the burning of the-gas issuing from the circumjacent jets.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as re gards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any one of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 4 1. A gas burner comprising an outer annular chamber, and inwardly directed radial arms communicating therewith, said'chamber and arms bein' providedwith apertures for the escape of t e gas therefrom,and the space between the ends of said arms and on whereby such center and the space on either side of said arms is left'unobstructed, said chamber and arms being provided with apertures for the escape of the gas therefrom, substantially as and for the purpose described.
