Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2', 1909.
citizen of the United States, and resident of the boron h of Manhattan, city, county, and State of ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guard- Rail Clamps, of Wll'lCh the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l isan end elevation showing the clam applied; Fig. 2a plan view, the heads of t -e track rail and the guard rail" being removed and the arm of the locking block being shown in section to" more clearly show the construction of the device; Fig. 3 a detail perspective View of one of the spacing pieces employed; Fig. 4 an end elevation showing the ard rail clampin position; Fig. 5 a detai vertical sectional view on the line V-V of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 a detail side elevation of a portion of the clamp yoke; Fig. 7 a detail perspective viewof the clamp wedge; and F 1g. 8 a plan View showing a modified form of the 0 amp locking-block.
. This invention relates to that class of devices known as guard rail clam s, and which are used for the urpose o clampin a ard rail to the a jacent track rail, a n ler lock or spacing means being interposed between the two rails to' hold them a fixed distance from each other.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide means by which the clamp may be clamping means to thetie, or keying or o'lting it to the ard rail.
Another 0 ject of the invention is to provide means whereby the clamp will be held tightly in "lace by a wedge and thawed e will be Ioc position by a locking evice, said device ing inturn connected to any suitable means.
Referring t6 t evarioif'is parts by numer- Ms, 1 designates "the wick rail and 2' the guard rail. To space the guardrail a suitable distance --from the. track rail employ the twoart filler block 3. This bloc' is composed of two arts, 4 and 5,which are ll jv on a diagonal line, the
'ooved vertically so that the two parts the e interlocked-to prevent independent en wise movement of said sections or members.
The member 4 is provided mid-way bedinal line of the guard rail, as shown tom of sai tween its upper and lower edges with an outward extending horizontal rib 6 which extends the entire length of the block; and the co-ac'ting member 5'is formed with a cor responding groove 7 to receive said rib, whereby the two members will be held against independent vertical movement. The member 4 is considerably longer than the member 5 to provide for a-considerable range of adjustment. It will 'be seen that by adjusting the blocks on each other the uard rail may be spaced various distances rom the track rail. The shorter member 5 is provided with depending lugs 8 which engage the sides of the clamp bar proper shaped arm 12, the end 0 said arm turned inwardly toward the guard rail, its vertical face 13 being oblique to the longitpclear y in ig. 2. This vertical face is cut out from the 11 per surface of the arm 12 downward a suita 1e distance to .form the. horizontal shoulder 14. Said arm is also undercut fromthe end of the shoulder 14 to form the wedge surfaces 15 and 16, said surfaces being parallel with the oblique'fa'ce 13 of the arm.
' In the space between the guard rail and the end of the arm 12 isfitted a clamping wedge 17. This wedge bears against the Web of the guard rail and is formed with the ontward extending wedge portion 18 at its lower end, said wedging portion being formed with the surfaces 19. and 20 which engage the corresponding surfaces 15 and 16 of the clamping yoke, said surfaces 19 and 20 being oblique to the vertical face 21'which engages the web of the guard rail and c orre-' sp'on ing to the inclination of the oblique faces of the clam yoke. The wedge block is also formed'wit an oblique .face 22 which is verticall corrugated as shown, the bot;
corru ations being in substantially the same hor zontal plane as the shoulder 14.
' ment on' the clamp.
as at 24 to adapt it to engage the similarly corrugated face 22 of the wedge block. The locking block 23 is provided with an outwardly. extending arm 24 adapted tolie against the side of the clamp yoke, said arm being slotted at 26 for the passage of a securing bolt 25 and to ermit of its adjusthe arm 12 of the clamp yoke is formed with an aperture for the passage of the securing bolt 25.
' Should it be impossible to drive the wedge inwardly sufliciently to permit the ribs on the lockmg block to enter the desired grooves in the wed'ge I provide a spacing strip 27 which may be inserted between" the face 13 of the yoke and the outer or rear face of the locking block, as shown clearly in Figs.'2 and 5. These spacing strips maybe provided with arms 28 extending outwardly and adapted to lie against the sideof the clamp wedge, sai arms bein slotted forithe passage of the'securing olt 25,'as shown in %n Fig. 8 the locking block 23 is provided with two arms 24 which embrace the sides of the arm 12 of the clamp yoke. This form of locking block may be employedinstead of the formshown in Figs. 2 and 4, it being, of
course, understood that I do not wish to be limited to an specific-form of locking block, except as t e same may be specifically claimed herein.
In assembling the clamp the wed e is driven in between the clamp yoke and the guard rail and then the locking block -is r'iven down between the face 13 of the clamp and the face 22 of the wedge,the ribs and grooves on the engagin faces of the two parts interlockin there holding the wedge in its lo ed position. When the locking block has been driven down to its final position the securing bolt 25 is inserted and bolted to the yoke. g Y
' In order to strengthen the lockin block and'to provide a surface that may be stantly struck in drivin 'the locking block in place I form said bloc with an outwardly extending stren hening cap or flange 29 which is ada te .to extend outward over the 11 per end 0 the 'arm 12 as shown clearly in l -laving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent is 1.
