Description
A. WELIN. DA'V'IT FOB' HOISTING AND LOWERING BOATS.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 2, 1907.
Patented oct. 26. 1909.
/NVENTOH UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
AXEL WE'LIN, or LoNDoN, "ENciJANn, ASSIGNOR fro wEmN auninitalia-:Iv DAv'IT, A.
, CORPORATION or NEW YORK, -1 v- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AXEL VELIN, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsrin Davits for Hoisting and Lowering Boats, of which the followingris a specification. v
,This invention relates to davits for hoisting and lowering boats and is an improvement on, yor rather a carrying forward of the inventions disclosed. in prior Letters Patentr Nos. 680,823-and 711,947,` granted to me on August 20, 1901 and October 22, 1902.
Itis frequently the case that boats are arranged' in rows on the deck of a ship, one
inbo'ardy thev other. The outer boats are usually Vin position to be lifted by thedavits and' swung outboard for lowering, and then the boats in. the inner .row are run. o n rails to the position recently occupied by the outer boats. The presence of rails on the deck is often objectionable, and by the use of my present invention to the boats -iii either row can be picked up vand swung outboard by the sane davits' and the rails be thus dispensed witi., f
The accompanying drawing illustrates in elevation a preferred embodiment of my invention. 4 v
A indicates the davit having its lower end in the vform of a toothed sector or quadrant a, the teeth of which are adapted to niesh with those of a rack b. As shown, the sector extends to a substantially equal extent onv both sides of the longitudinal axis of the arm.
C indicates a supporting frame which will be rigidly secured to the deck of the vessel and a worm c is supported in said'franie to 40 have rotary movement only. This worm passes through a threaded nut d which is guided onV a rod c also c arried by the frame and is pivotally connected to the davit arm at its junction with the sector, as. indicated at f, and the center of the pivot is the center from which the arc of the sector is struck. The normal position ofthe davit is shown in full lines in the drawing where it will be seen that the davit arm is substantially vertical and that the middle teeth of the toothed sector are engaged with the middle teeth of the rack'and the nut el is about midway the llength o f the worm 0,. and it will readily Specification of Letters Patent; I, p y p Application aiedvneeember 2; i907'. serial No; 404,868.

be seen lAthat-by rotating-'the' worm c in one Y direction or the other the davit arin may be niovedn either direction to an equal degree of inclination from the vertical, as indicated in dotted lines. f
Two boats are indicated by D and E, the
.; latter being linboardl of DQ *Wfhen 'the davit 'is in its vertical positionit can be connected i to boat D and by rotating thel'worm in the proper direction v thepgboat Dcan be swuiigoutboard as indicated in dotted lines on the leftoff the figure, and afterthe. boat D has been lowered and detached from the davit ytlie'lattercan thenabe'sw'nng to the position indicated by dotted lines von the right of the figure and beconnected vto boat' E, whenthe latter may then be swung outboard the same as D was and lowered;
Any meansy inayfbefyeinployed to rotate the worm c but preferably I employ al shaft /L supportedat a right' angle "to the worm'V s and provided with a wheel gat its outer end which has a` crank handle '7a. Motion will be transmitted from the shaft 7L to the worm s c by any suitable.gearing such as bevel gears.
I have not illustrated these gears v as the construction is well known and my invention is not limited to any particular'mechanism Afor rotating the worm c. l.
-Haviiig described my invention, I claim:
1. In a davit for hoisting and lowering boats, the combination of a davit arm having a toothed sector at its lower end, a rack on which the sector may roll, and means for moving the davit arm to substantially an equal vdegree of inclination fromthe vertical in both directions.
2. Ina davit for hoisting and lowering 'boats, the combination` of a davit arm having atoothed sector at its lower end eX- tending to substantially an equal degree on both sides of the axial lne ofI said arm, arack upon which thefsctor may roll, and
means for movinw said arm to'an inclination f from the vertical in both directions.
3. In a davit for hoisting andflowering boats, the combination of-a davit arm hav,-y ring a toothed. sector at its `lo ei' end extend# ing to substantially an equal degree on both sides of the axial line of the arm, a rack upon which the sector may roll, a worm supported to rotate without longitudinal' movement, a threaded nut -pivotally coneither direction to' move the said arm to anV to an inclination from the vertical in both directions In witness whereof, I have signed my neme to the fore oing specification in the presence of two su scribing witnesses.
A/iXEL WELIN.'
nected to the davit arm at its junction with the sector and throngh which the worm passes,l and means for rotating the worm 1n inclination from the vertical.
4, In a davit for hoisting and/lowering boats, the combination of a d a'vit arm having at its lower rend a sectorlntersected by the arm, a surface upon which said sector may roll, and means for moving said arm Witnesses: v
