VENTILATING DEVICE FOR WINDOWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
Application filed October 14, 1907. Serial No. 397,401.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES V. IVALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bozeman, in the county of Gallatin and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating Devices for lVindows, and do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in ventilating devices for windows.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character adapted to be applied to window sashes whereby currents of air may be drawn into a room and directed both upwardly and downwardly, thus pro viding for a perfect circulation.
With this object in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangements of parts as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a portion of the outer side of the upper and lower sash of a window, showing the application of the invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the inner side of the sashes, showing the arrangement of the device on this side of the window; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view, taken on the line l l of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the side rail of the upper sash, and 2, the side rail of the lower sash. At suitable posit-ions in the upper and lower rails of the sashes are formed elongated openings or slots, 3, and over said slots or openings, 3, on the outer side of the rails, are arranged screened coverings, 4, which may be formed of woven wire netting, or in the form of perforated metal plates, as shown.
On the opposite or inner side of the rails, 1 and 2, over the openings 3 are arranged hoods, 5, which are preferably constructed of sheet metal and in the form of vertically disposed rectangular channels, the lower one of'which on the lower sash, 2, is closed at its lower end and opens upwardly above the upper end of the slot 3, while the upper hood is closed at its upper end and open on its lower end below the lower end of the slot 3, in the upper sash.
By arranging the hoods as herein shown and described, a current of air drawn in through the opening 3 in the lower sash, will be directed upwardly, while the current of air drawn in through the opening 3 in the upper sash will be directed downwardly, thus providing for a thorough circulation of air in the room.
IVhile I have shown and prefer to arrange the ventilating device in the sashes of a window, it is obvious that the same may be arranged in the window frames or walls of a building, if desired.
If desired, I may employ a cap, 6, adapted to be applied to the open ends of the hoods, 5, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 thereby providing means for closing the same when desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
A ventilating device of the character described, comprising, a screen adapted to be applied to a window sash over a ventilating opening formed therein, a detachable hood adapted to be secured over said opening, said hood having one side open to register with the opening in the sash and one end open to the atmosphere, attaching flanges ext-ending laterally from the sides and closed end of said hood, and removable means for closing the open endofsaid hood whereby an unobstructed passage of air is permitted on the removal of said closure.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES V. WALKER.
