- DOOR-OPERATING MECHANISM.
Specification of lLetters Patent. Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
Application filed February 4, 1909. Serial No. 476,032.
Be it known that I, HAROLD ROWNTREE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have made a certain new and -useful Invention in Door- Operating Mech- 1 anism, of which the following is a speci-fication.
. In many instances it is desirable to provide means within an entrance or doorway to divide the same into separate passages, the Aone capable of use as an entrance and the other as an exit, and in conjunction therewith to employ doors respectively controlling said exit and entrance. lThis is particularly desirable Ain case of doors employed on cars thereby aording separate entrance and exit ways for passengers entering and leaving a car and hence very greatly facilitating the handling of the passengers in street or other railway traiic reducing the ltime required to load and unload the passengers and materially` aiding in the 'collection of fares.
My invention relates to doors andltheir operating mechanism embodying these characteristics. y Y
The invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location and relatlve arrangement of parts, all as will be more out in the appended c aims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, and to the various-views and reference signs appearing thereon,-'Figure 1 is a view in horizontal section of the endof a car showingin plan an arrangement of doors and operating meansI therefor embodying principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation, parts broken oil", showin a somewhat diiierent arrangement embody invention. Fig. 3 isla view similar 'to Fig. 1 showing in plan the arrangement of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is aAview similar rto Fi 2 showing another arrangement include Within the scope of my invention. v
In carrying out my invention I provide a standard, post, or other obstructionwithin theentry way of a door opening and I arthrough such doorway, and I-.provide means for controlling the operation of the door,
ing my said means being ca ableof location atV or central from .any esiredl or convenient point. In the operation ofthe doors I provide forthe opening of the vdoors on one side. ost, standard or other obstruction,
of the in one direction, while the doors on the other side of such post, standard or obstruction are arranged to open in theother direction,
therebyv affording a most 'simple and eiiicient arrangement for separate entrance andl exit nassageways through the doorway.v 'l j In connection with the door arrangement above referred to I also employ a movable step together with means for securingV a coinvthe car conductorfrom which the doors and steps may be vcontrolled and-the fares collected. These principlesmay beferfnbodied ina wide variety of different constructions and arrangements. While, therefore, Ihave shown, and will now describevarious coning the desired results,I do not desire to be limited or restrictedin the broad scopeyof 4my invention, fas defined in the claims, to
an specificstructure or arrangement.
n the construction shown in Fig. 1 A designates a post, standard or other obstruction, and wh1ch, for convenience of description I. shall hereinafter refer to as a post intending to include -by this term a standard.1
,structions and .arrangements for accomplishy or other form of. obstruction for the puro oses intended. This post is arranged withm the doorway to separate the same into .passageways on eitherV side thereof.; In
these passageways are arran ed doors which, in this ease, comprise the fol ing panels B, C, on the one side, and the similar anels B', C', onvthe other side. The panels B', are res tively hinged at one side'edge thereof to t e7 roximate side edge'of the other panels 0,62, the latter being connected at their extreme outer side edges to rock shafts D, D', respectively. A gear E, E', .is rigidly mounted concentric with the shafts D, D,
respectively, and these gears, throughI inter'- mediate gears G, G', drive ears F,F, rig-A idly connected to 'fthepane s B, B, in the axial line of their hinges. By rocking shafts D, D, the panels C and Cy are swung Ainto-open or closed position, as required, while, coincidently therewith, the panels B, B, :foldy upon said panels C, C', orare' extended into line therewith. yIn practlce I preferto rotate the shafts D, D", opposite '.'directions wherebyythe doormoyements in folding upon each other and .in attaining, theirc'ompletely opened position will travelin a direction corresponding tothe passenger movement. Thus the door section C will be swung outwardlyin the exit passage way while section C', will swing inwardly 1n the. entrance passageway, as indicated by the arrows. In connection with the post A, I
have shown a'railing H, arranged to extend inwardly into the c ar, where the apparatus 'is used on a car, thereby extendin the passageways inside the car and de nin the `s ame,'c while' at the same time affording a l convenient station for the car conductor within thecar, from ywhich-the operation of' .the doors maybe controlled, as, for instance, by means of a control handle J, and connections K, to suitable means, notshown, in thisiview but corresponding to the'operating shaft in Figs. 2 and 4. This railing I-I, also enables the conductor to collect the fares of the passengers at a ,point within the car, thereby .insurin thecollectionof all the fares while, at tie same time the conductor is in a positionto view theentrance and exit ways and vto control the same, in supervising the loading or unloading of assengers and to. himself be seen or observe by passengers or inspectors inside thel car. A
In Fig. 1,'I have shown the folding doorconstruction as applied to lthe side of aicar M,`where'there is no platform'-butitiis evi dent that the same arrangement-may be employed oncars having end platforms, "in which oase the doors maybe arranged to control the entry 'way from the platform to the inside of the car' body, as indicated in kdotted lines.
In Fig; 2, the Shafts D,-D, nre-shew as being operated by gear connection to an operating shaftvN, having a crank O, by which it rocked'tlirough the connections K, or otherwise, as may be convenient. The step P, isconnected to this operating shaft'N, so v as to rock or swing into .or out of position for use coincidently withv the-operation of the doors. In the forni shown in this figure of the drawinggh owever, thepost A', instead of being a fixed post asin Figl, is a shaft which 1s also rocked through gear connection with the'o 'erating rock shaft N. And
instead ofthe oorpanels C, C,having co-` operating panels hinged thereto as inthe arrangement shown in l, the rock shaft A', carries a panel B2, which extends on both sides of thel shaft A', thetwo-wings thereof l for use as shown in Fig. 3. -In this case the railing if used, should be'. arranged in suitable larrangement with respect to `the lopenjposition'of the panel B2, to forni the extended passageway to and fromthe dooI-,
wa 15h the arran ement shown in Fig. 4,' I employ twosha ts A2, A3, to form the post or obstructionwithin the Y doorwayfa'nd dividing the same into 'passageways, and v`to each of these shafts I attach a door section or panel B3, B4, respectively, cooperating with the door sectionsor panels() or saidshafts being suitably geared, yas shown to operating shaft N, to oausey said panels B3, B4, to cooperate in direction of moveabove yexplaine A door construction, and controlling means therefor, embodying the principles of ment with the dpanels C, C', in opening, as
operation as above explained, is lspecially adapted forvuse on streetcars, though `iti isv .to be understood that my invention is not to be limited or restricted v1n res ect to the luse to which it is 'to be vut'. ere employed on street'cars I aVoi the necessity ofp'roviding sliding pockets in the side lof the car toaccommodate the doors when opened, and I am enabled to secure a-wid'e o ening of the entryway and also to apply t e apparatus; i
to the'ends of cars where the sides thereof may be somewhat rounded or inclined with reference to the len h of the car.v
Having now set orth'the objectand nature of my invention,- and various construc-- tions embodying the principles thereof, what I .claim as new and useful and of m own invention, and desire to secure by tters Patentis: U
