To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, HAROLD F. ELY, a c1t1- zen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in thecounty of Kings and State of" New York, have invented new and useful' Improvements in lVater-Tube'Boilers, of
' which the. following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in water tube boilers, the object of the invention being to provide-T a novel'construction and arrangement ofparts insuring strength,
durability and economy of construction and operation, rapid'and elfective. generation of steam, and ease of access to the parts, for cleaning, repairs'and replacement when occasion requires.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accom-- panying .drawing, showing a verticallongitudinal section of 'a boilerembodying the lnvention.
Referring to the-drawin 1 desi nates the formed of boiler casing, which is p-re erably a frame work ofisteel beams a'ndwalls of masonry of a refractory character or' lined with refractory material, the front wall'2 being provided with the customary fire door or doors 3 and ash door or doors 4.v The front wall may also be provided with suitable tube doors and at convenient points in the setting suitably closed openings may be provided to give access to the interior of-the setting for cleaning or other purposes. I have not deemed it necessary to show these tube doors and openings, as they may be of any suitable construction and arrangement and form no part of the invention. The grate 5 is arranged in the lower front portion of the casing between the front wall and an upstanding bridge wall or abutment 6, and in rear of this bridge wall or abutment is another upstanding wall or abutment 7.
Suitably seated within and supported upon the front wall 2 at the upper front portion of the furnace casing is a horizontal transverse drum 8, and similarly arranged at'the top and bottom of the rear of the casing are horizontal transverse drums 9 and 10, the drum 9 being arranged above and the drum 10 below the horizontal plane of the drum 8. The drums 8 and 10 are preferably of the same diameter, While the drum 9 is of lar'er diameter than said drums 8 and 10 an provided in practice with the nections. (Notshown.) The drum 8 is connected with the drum 9 by an upper rearwardly and upwardly inclined bank of water tubes 12, and with the drum 10 by a downwardly and rearwardly inclined bank of water tubes 13, while the drum 10 is in turn connected with the-drum I v 9 by a rear vertical bank of tubes 14:..- The 'tubes of each bank are disposed in parallel relation or substantially so, but their end portions are curved or bent at a proper radius to enter the drums radially and are expanded within their receiving openings in the drums so as to permit of their individual insertion and removal wlthout interference with one another, thus providing for the ready and convenient removal of an old tube" ,V and'its replacement with a new one.

This bafile 16 is referably formed of fire-brick sections exten ing across the bottom of the bank and wholly or partially inclosing the lower tubes thereof for a suitable distance, as illustrated, to protect such'lower tubes from the intense heat of the incandescent fuel, while forming a deflector to cause the flames and products of combustion to pass backwardly over the bridge Wall 6 and-through the space between the same and the lower rear portion of the battle and into the space between said the abutment 7. The tubes 14 are arranged within a vertical flue or passage 19 which communicates at its outer end with an outlet flue 20, through which the productsof combustion pass outward to the stack. This flue 19 is formed by the abutment 7, lower rear end of the baffle 17 and a vertical partition '21 of fire-brick or other suitable material, depending downwardly from the lower portion of the drum 9 between the upper ends of the sets of tubes 12 and 14: and terminating above,
the lower rear portion-of-the baflie or partition 1'Z.to provide a passage 22, connecting thelower .rear portion of the chamber 15 with the lower end ofvthe flue 19. This partition 21, which extends across the furnace chamber, prevents the products of combus tion from passing directly from the upper portion of the chamber 15 to the outlet flue 20, and causes the same to flow downwardly through the passage 22 into the flue 19 and toheat the drums 9 and 10 and tubesl4 beforedischarging through the outlet 20. this means the lower tubes of the bank 13 for the rapid conversion of the same into From the foregoing description, the construction and mode of operation of my improved water tube boiler will. be readily understood, and it will be seen thatthe construotion and arrangement of the drums and \flues is such as to provide forthe circulation of the water in an'elfective manner, and
This construction and arrangement of the parts also insures simplicity, inexpensiveness of erection. and maintenance, and ready and convenient cleaning and repairs of the parts when occasion requires. By c0nstructing the inclosing casing of aframe work of steel and walls of masonry, a light, strong 'and durable type of casing is provided.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is I A water tube boiler comprising a casing having a grate at the lower front portion thereof, and front and rear bridge walls forming a pocket or chamber in rear of. the grate, a drum at the upper front portion of the casing, -drums at the upper and lo'wer rear portions of the casing, the lower rear drum being arranged between'ythe rear wall of the casing and rear, bridge wall, upper and lower inclined sets of water tiibes con-' necting the front drum with the'rear drums, a vertical set of water tubes connecting the rear drums, inclined partitions above and below the lower set of inclined tubes and extending respectively from the lower rear" drum to a point in advance of the frontbridge wall and from the front drum to a point in rear of the front bridge wall, said partitions being thus arranged to provide passages above said pocket and n communication with the upper front portion of the furnace chamber for the circulation of the flames and products of combustion from the grate over the front bridge wall, into said pocket and upwardly a'ndforwardly between the lower set of tubes and artitions to the upper portion of the cham er, whereby the upper set of tubes between the front drum.
