GAS-PRODUCER.
Hesse, Empire of Germany, have inventedv -certain new and useful improvements in Power GasProducers, of which the following is a specification.
lt has hitherto been impossible to convert line granular or brittle bituminous fuel into gas in gas-producers havin a shaft form. For the purpose of producing heatin gas such material is conveyed into gas prodgucers with stepped grates and in these distilled in comparatively thin layers, as thicker layers of the fine granular and brittle fuel more particularly in rubbish heaps such as are formed in shaft gas producers, oer such a resistance to the air for combustion that such gas producers cannot be permanently maintained in action `either with natural or forced draft. This drawback becomes especially apparent when such material is tobe used for the production ofpower gas, for which,
as is wellv known, two furnaces are necessary, one for distilling the fuel and the other for converting it into gas, the latter of which grates also 'serves for decom osing the tarry distillation products forme during the distillation period. Now it is an indispensable preliminary condition for the production of power gas, that the distillation and also the decomposition of the tar roducts shall be a complete one, immaterial y whether the two furnaces necessary therefor' in the shaft gas producer areseparate chambers or combined into a single furnace. This preliminary condition can however only be fulfilled if the fuel, both in the hearth in which the distillation takes place and also in the furnace in which the decomposition of the tar products and the actual conversion into gas takes place can develop in sufficient thickness of layer. In order to comply with these requirements it has always been necessary in shaft gas producers to work with considerable thickness of the layers whereby of course the use of line granular and brittle fuel is excluded.
This invention has for its object' a gas producer which is preferably adapted for line granular brittle fuel. The invention consists of insertions or bridges being provided in the generator, which bridges owing to their peculiar form relieve fuel lying on the furnace hearth from heights may i Specication of Letters Patent.'A Patgligd 0,313, 19, 1909, Aapplication led December 7, 1906. two sections made at right angles to one The bridges a1 a2 (1.8 arranged in another.
` to one another, which bridges proximity' may be made of cast iron and firebrick,`
serve for relieving the-pressure of the' coal lying between them. Certain of these inresistances being thereby increased and thereby the introduction of air renciered-l more ditlicult. I declare'that what I claim is I 1. The combination, with a gas generator, of bridges eirtendin4 transversely of the fuel chamber, said bri groups or series, those of one group being above those of another group, andsaid upper bridges having inclined walls adapted to support the weight of the fuel in the chamber and having perforations in said inclined Walls for the purpose specified'.
2. The combination, with a gas generator, of a series of bridges al, a2 an a3 extending transversely of the fuel chamber and having exits at their ends for the escape of the gas, and yfuel supporting bridges arranged above said first namedlbridges and communicating with the open air and having perforations in FRTZ MLLER.
