ABRAIVI VAN BRUNT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STAMPING-DTACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAM VAN 'BRUNT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamping-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates more particularly to a machine for stamping or impressing letters, figures or emblems upon the interior of plain gold finger rings.
The primary object of the invention is to provide simple and efiicient means in which plain gold or other finger rings may be readily held and figures, letters or emblems stamped or impressed upon the inner surface thereof without in any way injuring or defacing the surface of the ring by the pressure applied thereto during the stamping operation, and which machine is adapted for stamping rings of various sizes, thereby overcoming many of the objections incident to the usual method employed for stamping such articles.
A further object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means in which the parts may be easily constructed and assembled, and the parts of which may be readily adjusted and held in such adjusted position.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, partly in elevation, of the machine. Fig. 4 is a transverse section, taken on the line IVIV of Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are sections of the ring guide or guard. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the ring guard block; and Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of one of the bearing block members for the ring guard block.
The base plate 10 may have a head 11 secured thereto by bolts or otherwise, so as to form a part of the machine frame, and said head is provided with the bearings 12 at the upper part thereof, in which is journaled a shaft or spindle 13, the said bearings having removable caps to permit the spindle to be removed. On one end of the spindle 13 is Specification of Letters Patent.

a gear 14, and this gear is in mesh with the pinion 15 secured to a shaft 16, and said shaft 16 is journaled at one end in the head 11 and its other end in a bracket 17, and on the outer end, of the shaft 16 is a crank 18 by which the spindle 13 through the gears 14 and 15 may be rotated.
A stamping element 19 is removably held in one end of the spindle 13, and this element has a tapered stem 20 which fits into a similarly formed opening in one end of said spindle l3 and is ground therein so as to make a tight joint therewith. One end of the element 19 is provided with a collar 21 and a key is adapted to prevent the stamping element from having a relative rotary movement with respect to the spindle 13. The inner end of the stem 20 is provided with a threaded opening and this threaded opening is engaged by the threaded end of a stem or rod 22. This stem 22 is provided with a collar 23, which is held in a recess in the end of the spindle 13, so as to permit independent rotary movement thereof, but not a lengthwise movement, and to hold the collar in the recess in the spindle is a collar or part 24 which is held by the screws 25 or otherwise to the end of said spindle 13. The end of the stem 22 is provided with a crank or handle 26 so that by rotating the stem 22 in either direction the stamping element 19 may be quickly removed from or held in the end of the spindle 13 to permit different elements to be placed therein. This element 19 is provided with an extended portion 27, and this portion is provided with the stamping die 28, the characters thereon differing according to what is to be stamped on the interior of the finger ring, being usually such as will indicate the karat of the gold of which the ring is made.
To hold the ring to be stamped so that the surface thereof will not be at all injured or defaced while being stamped, I provide a ring guide or guard 29 and loosely mount the same to rotate in a guard block 30. The ring guard 29 is much larger than the gold finger ring to be stamped so as to adapt the same to receive various sizes of finger rings, and said guard is provided with an annular groove 31 on the interior surface thereof in which the finger rings to be stamped are placed, as shown best in Figs. 3 and 4. The ring guard 29 is annular and is eccentrically arranged with respect to the aXis of the stamping element 19, and is held against lateral movement by means of the guard block 30.
The ring guard block is substantially rectangular and is provided with a recess formed by a marginal flange 33, Fig. 7, in which said ring guard is adapted to rotate, and said guard will be held against displacement by means of the marginal flange. This ring guard block or table 30 is movable so as to reciprocate transversely of the machine, and its movement in one direction is due to the rotary movement of the ring guard while the finger rings are being stamped, and said guard block is provided with grooves lengthwise thereof in which fit the ribs or guides 34, Fig. 3, located on the upper surface of a bearing block 35.
The bearing block has a plurality of steel or other rolls 36 journaled therein on which the guard block 30 is adapted to rest so that the said guard block may move readily transversely of the machine. The
bearing block 35 is held between the head 11 and a head or part 36 forming a part of the machine frame, andis movable-vertically and transversely to properly positici'i the finger rings with respect to the stamping die. This bearing block comprises two members 37 and 38 and the member 37 is properly guided on the member 38 to permit movement transversely of said member 38, and, to hold said member 37 in its adjusted position, one or more screws 39 are arranged in the head 11 and engage threaded apertures in the head and have their inner ends provided with a fingering portion 40 and have their outer ends engaging one side of the bearing block member 37, while the other side of said member is engaged by the end of a screw 41 one of which has a threaded aperture in the part 36 and is provided at its outer end with a fingering portion 42 and with a lock-nut 43, whereby the said member 37 of the bearing block may be adjusted laterally with respect to the member 38.
The member 38 of the bearing block holds the member 37 against lengthwise movement, and is provided with vertical grooves in its opposite sides, and these grooves are engaged by ribs or guides 44 located on the heads 36 and 11, said member 38 being provided with an inclined surface which is adapted to rest upon a wedge or wedgeshaped adjusting device 45.
The device 45 is adapted-to move trans versely of the machine and rests upon the base plate 10, and at one end thereof is held to a screw 46 which passes through a threaded aperture in a bracket 47 projecting from the base 10. One end of the screw has an operating handle 48 by which the screw may be rotated to move the wedge 45 inward or out-ward to raise or permit the bearing block to be lowered, and to secure the wedge in an adjusted position is a nut 49, which is adapted to hold the screw 46 against movement in the bracket 47. By these means the ring guard, as well as the ring guard block, may be adjusted both vertically and laterally to properly position the finger ring with relation to the stamping die.
During the stamping of the finger ring the ring guard 29 will rotate, and this will impart a transverse movement to the ring guard block, or table, and to restore the guard block 30 to its normal position a weight 50 is provided which is connected to one end of a flexible connection 51 that passes over a pulley or sheave 52 located at the upper end of a bracket or standard 53 and is attached to a lug 54 on the ring guard block 30, or other part thereof, so that in stamping the ring the movement of the ring will be against the action of the weight 50, and as soon as the finger ring has been stamped the said weight will restore the table or guard block to its former position, though instead of the weight a spring may be employed for this purpose. The move ment of the ring guard block will also move the ring guard and to properly position the same in its eccentric relation with respect to the stamping die, a stop 55 is provided which is attached to one side of the head 11, and projects outward in the path of the ring guard as shown best in Figs. 2, 3 and 4.
The construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. Assuming the parts to be in the position shown in the drawings, and a finger ring to be placed within the ring guard 29, so as to rest in the groove 31 of said ring guard and rotary movement to be imparted to the spindle 13 by means of the handle 18 to rotate the die 28 from its normal position, the die will during this movement and as soon as it engages the ring impress the character or characters carried thereby upon the inner surface of the finger ring. During this rotary movement and stamping operation, the finger ring will cause ring guard to rotate, and this rotary motion will impart a lengthwise movement to the ring guard block or table 30 against the action of the weight 50, and as soon as the stamping has been completed and the guard released, the weight will automatically restore the ring guard and ring guard block to its normal position, the parts being readily adjusted and new stamping dies permitted to be readily inserted or removed from the machine as already explained.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple and eflicient machine is provided whereby plain gold or other finger rings may have a character or characters stamped upon the inner surface thereof without in juring or defacing its outer surface; that' the parts of the machine may be readily constructed and assembled; that the parts may be readily and quickly adjusted, and said parts are so constructed that they will not readily get out of order.
