DEVICE FOR UNLOADING WAGONS.
Application filed May 25, 1909.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Serial No. 498,132.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL C. LEONARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ocheyedan, in the county of Osceola and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Unloading Vagons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for unloading wagons, the object in view being to provide a simple and practical apparatus for hoisting and lowering wagon bodies directly from the wagon truck or running gear, with the aid of a draft animal or animals, provision being made whereby, in the hoisting operation, the wagon body is tilted so that when it reaches the required elevation, a sufiicient inclination is imparted thereto to cause the contents of the wagon body to slide by gravity out of the body into the crib or other structure designed to receive the same.
The invention is designed for handling wagon bodies for the purpose of unloading ear corn and delivering the same into the crib but the apparatus may be put to various other uses such for example, for the dumping of oats or grain from the wagon into a small granary.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as. the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a front elevation of the apparatus embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section through a wagon body, showing the same provided with hooks for engagement with the hoisting cables of the apparatus. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the apparatus, showing a wagon body hoisted in position to discharge the load into a crib.
The apparatus comprises a pair of front posts 1 and a pair of rear posts 2, the front posts being of greater height than the rear posts and each of the posts being provided at its upper end with a pulley 3 over which the hoisting cables run. These posts 1 and 2 are connected at their lower ends to longitudinal sills 4 and sub-crossed sills 5 and are further connected by side cross braces 6. They are also connected by front braces 7 to the longitudinal sills 4 and are also preferably connected to the crossed sills 5 by means of side braces 8. The general construction of the frame may, however, be varied considerably without departing from the principle of this invention.
Mounted in bearings 9 adjacent to the rear set of posts 2 is a main rotary drum shaft 10 having mounted fast thereon a set of rear drums 11 and a set offront drums 12, the front drums being of larger diameter than the rear drums so that they will wind their cables up more rapidly than the rear drums 11. From the rear drums, hoisting cables 13 extend around guide pulleys 14 and 15 and thence upward over the pulleys 3 atthe upper ends of the posts 2, said cables 13 being provided at their extremities with rings or eyes 16 adapted to engage hooks 17 projecting from opposite sides of the wagon body as shown in Fig. 2. From the forward drums 12, hoisting cables 18 extend around guide pulleys 19 over the pulleys 3 at the tops of the posts 1, said cables being provided at their extremities with rings or eyes similar to those at 16 above described and for the same purpose.
Mounted fast on the same shaft 10 is a power drum 20 around which is wound a draft cable 21 provided at its free end with a draft hook 22 to which one or more draft animals are adapted to be hitched for the purpose of pulling on the cable 21 and actuating the shaft 10 thereby causing a winding of the cables 13 and 18 in a manner readily understood.
A wagon may be backed in the .position shown in Fig. 3 between the two sets of posts and sufiiciently close to the receiving crib or structure shown at 23. The rings 16 are then engaged with the hooks 17 on the wagon body located adjacent to the front and rear thereof, after which the draft animal or animals are hitched to the draft cable 21. The animals thus furnish the power to revolve the shaft 10 and it will be understood from the foregoing description that by reason of the difference in the diameter of the front and rear drums 12 and 11, the rear end of the wagon body will be carried upward at a greater rate of speed than the rear end thereof, thereby bringing the wagon body to an inclined position as shown in Fig. 1, upon reaching the desired elevation. By swinging the end gate 24 of the wagon to a projecting position as shown in Fig. 3, the contents of the wagon body then liberated will gravitate and discharge into the crib. In again lowering the Wagon body the variation in the diameter of the drums 11 and 12 will restore the wagon body to a horizontal position as it reaches the truck or running gear, after which the wagon body may be again connected to the truck.
I claim Wagon unloading apparatus comprising front and rear sets of connected posts and also embodying sills and sub-sills to which said posts are fastened, pulleys on said posts located at difierent heights, a main rotary drum shaft, front and rear sets of drums of different diameters fast on said shaft, cables wound upon said drums and running over the aforesaid pulleys and having wagon body elements at their free ends, a relatively large power drum also fast on said shaft, and a winding cable on the large drum provided with a draft device at the free end thereof.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
