ALBERT D. CARTWRIGHT, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
I-IORSESI-IOE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Application filed. February 27, 1909. Serial No. 480,347.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT D. CARTWRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 3316 Monroe street, Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in horseshoes, and one object of my invention is the provision of a horseshoe which can be readily applied to the hoof of the animal, and which will provide a cushion tread surface rendering the shoe comfortable to the animal and preventing slipping.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a horseshoe which will be of durable and practical construction, which will prevent slipping or injury and which will be thoroughly efficient from every point of v1ew.
To attain the desired objects my invention consists of a horseshoe embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts for service substantially as disclosed herein.
In order that the details of construction of my horseshoe may be fully understood, and its advantages be appreciated, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings in detail a horseshoe constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention.
Figure 1, represents a perspective view of the two metal parts or sections employed in my horseshoe. Fig. 2, represents a perspective view of the complete shoe. Fig. 3,
represents a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4;, represents a sectional view on the line 4L4L of Fig. 2.
In the drawings: The letter A, designates the upper metal section which is provided with nail openings B, and is of the proper form to fit and be secured upon the hoof of the animal, and is provided in the toe portion with the threaded opening C. This metal section rests upon the metal section D, provided at the heel with the hooks E, which receive and secure the section A, and
said metal section is further provided with the depending studs F, arranged at the heel portions and intermediate of the section D. At the toe said section is provided with the sleeve Gr, the purpose of which will appear. It will thus be seen that the upper section rests fiat against and is secured to the hoof, and that said section is secured to the intermediate section D, by means of the hooks E, and the screw H at the toe portion said screw H having its threaded end engaging the opening C, of the section A, and
fitting in the sleeve G, with its head engage ing the said sleeve. Between the sections A and D, I interpose a fiber layer J, and embed the section D, in the lower pad section K, which is provided with a roughened or corrugated tread surface L, the section K, being made of a proper and suitable elastic or cushioning material.
It will be apparent that the upper section is secured directly to the hoof, and the intermediate section is secured at the heel and toe portions to the hoof section, and that the pad forming the tread is secured to. the intermediate section, said section fitting or being embedded in the tread, making a complete unitary structure.
I claim:
In a horseshoe, a hoof plate having nail openings therein and a threaded opening in the toe portion, a resilient tread, an intermediate attaching section having depending studs embedded in the tread and formed with portions passing around the ends of the hoof section and engaging the same, and means passed vertically through the toe of the sections and engaging the intermediate section and the threaded opening in the hoof section for holding the device securely but detachably in position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT D. OARTWRIGHT.
Witnesses G. W. GRAHAM, MALLIE B. GRAHAM.
