MANGLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 8, 1908. Serial No. 431,582.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL RUDOLF SEI- FERT, a prospective citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mangles, of which the following is a specification.V
The object of this invention is to provide a device of the class specified having features of novelty and advantage.
In the drawings-Figure l is a front view of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawings a is the frame of the machine having the side uprights a a in which the bearings of the rolls are located. There are three rolls, 1, 2, 3, located one above the other. The middle roll 2 is mounted to rotate in bearings 2L 2a, which are fixed in the side uprights a a, and is provided with driving mechanism such for instance as the gears and hand wheel illustrated at Z9.
The upper roll l and the lower roll 3 are rotarily supported' in bearings la la, 3a 3a, which are free to slide up and down in the side uprights a a. The bearings la 1EL vare connected to move together by the lyoke c and f the bearings 3a 3a are connected to move together by the yoke OZ.
Straps c f are secured to either end of the yoke c, preferably near the bearings la la, and extend down under the yoke eZ. On the lower ends of these 'straps are suspended levers Z Z with their outer ends Z2 Z3 bearing on the under side of the yoke d, the free ends Z4 Z5 crossing and terminating inside of the` uprights a a. A weight, such as the box m i loaded with sand, brick, or some such heavy material, is supported by the free ends of these levers as illustrated and through the straps e f draws the yoke c and the upper roll l down onto the center roll 2, at the same time the outer end o f the levers exerting pressure on the lower side of the yoke cZ to force the lower roll 3 up against the center roll 2.
A horizontal table t extends to the front of the machine at about the level of the lower side of the center roll and an apron p is secured to the center roll 2 and is wound up on this roll, passing between it and the l upper and lower rolls.
for use the apron lies on the table with one end passing between the lower and center rolls and secured to the latter. The work to be ironed` is laid on the apron and the Patented ct. 19, 1909. 1
center roll turned, winding up the apron thereon under pressure of the upper and lower rolls. This constitutes the ironing operation. The direction of rotation of the center roll is then reversed, the apron being unwound from the roll and the work taken ofil and a new lot substituted.
Machines made in accordance with my invention are very convenient for use; they have a large capacity and by the arrangement of rolls and levers the pressure obtained is even and direct, steady and very forcible.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a mangle, a frame, a pair of bearings iixedly mounted therein, a roll mounted to rotate in said Iixed bearings, an apron having one end secured to said roll, two pairs of sliding bearings, one pair arranged in said frame above the fixed bearings and the other pair arranged within said frame below the fixed bearings, a roll rotatably mounted in each pair of sliding bearings, a yoke connecting the bearings ofthe upper pair of sliding bearings together, a yoke connecting the bearings of the lower pair of sliding bearings together, a plurality of straps depending from the upper yoke, a le- Vver fulcrumed on the lower end of each of said straps and having its outer end slidably engaging with said lower yoke, said levers extending at an inclination and oppositely disposed with. respect to each other, a weight, means for connecting one end of the weight to the innerv end of one of the levers, and means for connecting the other end of the weight to the inner end of the other of the levers.
2. In a mangle, a frame, a pair of bearings fixedly mounted therein, a roll mounted to rotate in said fixed bearings, an apron having one end secured to said roll, a pair of sliding bearings mounted in said frame above and below said fixed bearings, rolls rotatably mounted in said sliding bearings, a yoke connecting said upper pair of bearings, a second yoke connecting said lower pair of bearings, straps depending from said upper yoke and extending below said lower yoke, levers suspended in the lower ends of said straps and extending in opposite directions with respect to each other and having their outer ends in engagement with the under side of said lowerl yoke, and a Weight common to both levers connected at its ends to the said levers.
3. In a mangle, a frame, a pair of bearings fiXedly mounted therein, a roll mounted to rotate in said fixed bearings, an apron having one end secured to said roll, a pair of sliding bearings mounted in said frame above and belovvr said fixed bearings, rolls rotatably mounted in said sliding' bearings, a yoke Connecting said upper pair of bearings, a second yoke Connecting said lower pair of bearings, straps depending from said npper yoke` and extending below said lower yoke, levers suspended in the lower ends Oi said straps and having their outer ends upturned, rollers mounted in the up-turned ends of said levers and engaging the under side of said lower yoke, and a Weight common to both levers and having its ends connected to said levers.
